Travel / Best German transit city for Krakow [6]

A4 stretch has been opened (in September) between border and junction A4/A18 so now you can drive from Krakow to the German border near Dresden on motorway avoiding Bolesławiec....

Thank god for that

now that the link has been finished it's much more comfortable to travel from Wrocław to Dresden than to Berlin (or rather from Dresden to Wrocław than from Berlin to Wrocław)

Language / Polish grammar exercises from hell [130]

kupiła is equally suitable here and does not change the meaning (and it's more colloquial)

man I have myself doubts here - and with that troje skrzypiec/szczypiec/kleszczy you actually put me to shame

Language / Polish grammar exercises from hell [130]

kleszczy

pary kleszczy or kleszcze

the latter is however at least ambiguous if correct at all

it's because trzy requires nominative btw

and Seanus i really appreciate your effort - nearly perfect - and yes many Poles would have a hard time with that one

Life / What is the nature of Polish people's hygiene? [76]

stiff face joker he is, this delphandomine ;)

some just don't bother to take a daily shower, some wear their clothes a bit too long(like changing their socks every week ;), it might not be disastrous during say winter but gets foul in summer

Language / Examples of zakupić and kupić [8]

kupować

present tense - regular/habitual/repetitive and similar

Pan Jarek co miesiąc kupuje 'Majsterkowanie w domu i ogrodzie'.

Mr Jarek buys 'DIY at home and in the garden' every month.

this is sort of infinite action - it repeats itself over and over - that's why it is imperfective

Pani Hela właśnie kupuje włoszczyznę do zupy. - Ms Hela is buying soup veggies right now.

Cześć Mirek. Gdzie się podziewasz? Hi Mirek. Where are you actually?
Jestem w Auchanie. Kupujemy komputer. - I'm in the Auchan. We're buying a puter.(right now or We're about to buy a puter - present tense is often used in Polish to describe intentions, plans for the future - Na wakacje jadę na Krym. I am going to Crimea for the holidays. - seems like it's quite simmilar in English)

there are no perfective forms in the present tense - either you have finished something - so it already happened (and thus is a question of the past) or you are planning to complete some action (have something done/finished) in the future

present tense - now - is always working/happening in the process (however lengthy the process might be)

Life / Polish funerals-no coffins inside a church ?? [5]

just from my experience - can't remember I have seen coffins in churches - before they built this special chapel where I lived as a kid - bodies were kept at homes

though not in a cupboard of course :P

in a coffin instead

History / Why are we called Poles instead of Polans? [29]

Poland was a "collection" of many Slavic tribes and even less homogenous than we thought.

don't believe that actually - there were Polanie around Kyiv (Kijów) as well - Slavic tribes would often split with parts wandering away quite far - see Chroats, Serbs, Volinians=Volhynians, Golęszyce/Golędzice some of these tribes had other than Slavic origin as probably the Serbs, Croats and Golęszyce

History / Why are we called Poles instead of Polans? [29]

I don't think there is any need to call ourselves either in English or in Polish Polanie/Polans - we're just Polacy/Poles - and that's it

History / Why are we called Poles instead of Polans? [29]

And you guys call our country and the ppl who are from it after two provinces in the West of the Netherlands: North Holland and South Holland.

isn't where Amsterdaam, den Haag and Rotterdam are?
you should now know why

btw in the past Niderlandy was much more common name - it is still used as a historical term - the reason (why it is not used for the name of the country) is not the whole of historical Netherlands is within the borders of the present Netherlands

btw the English (and Germans as far as I can tell) also often call the Netherlands Holland

while Nizozemsko (translation of the Netherlands) is the name of your country in Czech language, the Czechs still often call your compatriots Holandiane (you can here it watching football games)

Language / Directory of Polish slang and common phrases [in Polish] [28]

gumishu:
fujaro ;)

which means?

it has a couple of meanings

originally fujarka is flute/playing pipe (?)

then secondary meanings are (with fujara rather than fujarka):

- a person of less than pertect witts (or naive, not wise enough, used especially when someone misses his opportunities) - it does not mean that the person is dumb - there are other words to describe it in Polish

- a male organ (from the flute/pipe notion)

the ambiguity creates the humour factor here ;)

UK, Ireland / What is good about being in the UK? [140]

No. I'm sorry but if you come to England to live you must integrate

by which you mean what? that I do what? go to a pub every friday? or just pay taxes? think in English? I can well think in English and I will never think the English way (I guess)

if I dare not to say how are you? when I don't really mean it just say good morning or hello are you gonna punch me and throw me out of the country -

there are worse problems in England than in Poland?
who have created them - was it Poles?
and how do you actually compare the scale of the problems - you know why Polish people started going to England (late 90's) - because there was 20 per cent unemployment here

You were on a roll, until you mentioned the skilled Banker thing. Your post lost a lot of credibility on that one. ;-)

I was going to mention it too hahaha

Life / Minisurvey about living in Tricity (Sopot, Gdynia, Gdansk) [26]

Just wanted to say one thing from my experience about hunting for a job here in Poland...

I wholeheartedly agree

I think you're probably right about the email approach - I didn't get any response yet from the companies I tried.

there is this lingering thing with the Polish businesses - noone really cares to let you know they have received your application and what they are going to do with that

UK, Ireland / What is good about being in the UK? [140]

I honestly don't understand this statement, I see more like 9 frowns and 1 compliment. In fact compliment is a stupid word to use here, I don't think it's needed, I just don't want you to be biased... which I think you are.

you really should have a more open mind ;P

what she meant is of course you have 9 compliments of England (being here) from her - even if they weren't actually pointed clearly and 1 frown - seems like English people are really insecure :P ;)

If this were true then my answer would be that you are living within the bounds of our culture now though aren't you? So surely you want to integrate?

if I come to England mostly to earn money I feel no need to fully integrate - you just find it is better to conform in some areas (it just comes naturally) - some things are simply good in English culture and society (better if not much better than in Polish) and are a treat to adopt (well honestly mostly use it to one's advantage)

then again even if I stayed in England for the remainder of my life I don't think I would just simply integrate - if you find it strange or arrogant I again think it springs from your insecurity in your own culture

In England there are much worse problems than Poland

moaning

either looking for attention and/or being negative about someone else's country, specifically, if I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to live and work there, after all this is not your god given right but one our country has allowed no?

just unable to face criticism

I'm not negative

well you are negative - you spill youre nauseaous feeling here - why is there any need in you to share your nauseaous feelings with us

Pork is bad everywhere you go, We're not really a pork eating nation as we mostly eat beef.

dnz
hmm I thought pork sausage was a main ingredient in full English breakfast

Lager or not, there's completely no selection of stouts in Poland, and those that are, are hell expensive..

hey - isn't moaning??? :)

News / Why are Polish politicians so bad at accepting bribes? [17]

Unfortunately difficult to prove beyond reasonable doubt-the legal defence teams would have a field day making up reasons why 2 guys so happened to be a room together with 200tys zl in an envelope.....

if there is a will there is a way :):):)

be positive man

don't give in to doubts :) ;)
