Life / Antisemitism in Poland; is it safe for a Jew to live in Poland? [193]

There is very little antisemitism in Ireland but it does exist.

I know very little about Judaism, except Jesus was a Jew, we never had any Jewish influence or people growing up. We had very little of anything, ha ha ha. I would think most people in Ireland would know more about Islam.

News / Thank you Ireland... EUCCP [81]

I am going to be following this one.
I know democracy is mob rule but I still believe in it.
If there is another vote, which there seems to be, what happens if the answer in "No" again? do we get kicked out?

And if it is a "yes" vote what does that tell you? to keep having vote's until you get the "correct" answer, either way it looks bad, but I will read up more.

Life / Antisemitism in Poland; is it safe for a Jew to live in Poland? [193]

That is manipulation of facts.
My enemy's enemy is my friend. The Germans were fighting the British.

I would like to know if there are any other towns with this sh+t going on?

I meant in Poland.

Point one country in Europe without antisemitism.

You are obviously not the real McCoy, cause there were never any Jews in Ireland to be antisemitic against.

but also we have reborning jewish community.

Yes, I must agree, except for the march in my town and some of the crap on this site, I do find that Jews are celebrated in everything from food to music and in most paintings.

alangleben

My previous comment is true but I would imagine that it is very uncommon.
This is a magnificent country and I am sure you will enjoy it

Life / Antisemitism in Poland; is it safe for a Jew to live in Poland? [193]

s there a problem with anti-semitism in Poland, is it safe for me to go there without any fear?

Hello alangleben,
If you'd have asked me this a year ago I would have said "not at all".
I live in a smallish town in Malopolska and I was horrified to have heard there was a Nazi march in our town square. I went to the local museum and there used to be a huge Jewish population in the town. The Nazi's don't call themselves nazis but sh+t is still sh+t to me. They march on a particular day because it is when a Jewish guy got burned out of his house. One guy got arrested for doing the Nazi salut

I would like to know if there are any other towns with this sh+t going on?

Life / The Polish Flag Is White, with red tape! [32]

So long as they stamp the form I do not care what she may think.
Actually a good one is to go to offices just before closing, they cut the red tape sometimes when they want to go home.

The Polish Flag Is White, with red tape!

Great title by the way.
Anyway, I went to register in the town where I live, no problem but only fr three months, I had to go to Krakow to register before the three months was up, grand.

So I had just under a month left and I went into the office, I was told I couldn't have my registration done cause it took them a month to do and I did not have a month left on my temp one. I get furious with this kind of idiocy but I spotted the 13 stamps in front of the woman and just left.

I had it worse in another country but still gotta hate those offices...

Language / Sayings in English that seem odd in Polish? [22]

This isn't a saying, I just never looked at the word before I was teaching it to Poles several years ago, the word is butterfly, simple enough until a student exclaimed butter fly????

Food / Polish beer-match food [13]

What food goes best with the Polish beer?

I like your attitude farrah.
Straight to the heart of the matter.
Grilled Polish sausage with beer after snowboarding is a personal favorite.
I thought Polish were better known for vodka drinking, in with case there are different foods to go with the drink, such are pickled herrings.

Travel / Most Amazing places in Poland. What does it for you? [90]

One of the things that amazed me is the crazy tour thing in Nowa Huta, Krakow.
I really think this is genius idea and before you all start having a go at me, I am not affiliated with it, infact I have never been on it, I am planning to go on it with a particular friend.

Anyway Nowa Huta was the communist ideal and people from central Krakow used to think it was a dump 6 years ago. They have apparently turned the tour into one of the must see things in Poland, see https://polishforums.com/archives/2005-2009/uk-ireland/poland-michael-palin-visits-14922/

The lads have turned communism on its head and are making money from it. And have over shadowed Krakow and all it's grandeur for something genuinely unique (I hope). It is incomprehensible for westerners to know what it was like during communism. And unless you have to go to offices here, it might be a chance to see communism "at work". I love these things, unique people using disadvantages to their advantage.

PolskaDoll

In the states too? or are you in england?
In every civilized country you get 20 smokes in a 20 box, even in night clubs.

As for the advertisement of smokes, I do not actually know...ha ha ha. probably, I do not remember

Rip off Britain.

I remember years ago, must have been my first time there, drunk to hell in London somewhere, I bought a pack of smokes and the f%$£ing c^%$£ing machine gave me 16 in a box for 20, I bruised my knuckles punching and cursing the machine. ha ha ha

I was s annoyed ha ha ha.

And give up or enjoy. I smoked for years and refused to give up, I enjoyed them too much. got a chest cough and gave up. I still dream about smoking, I wake up feeling guilty ha ha ha.

What about alcohol? Does that look set to climb or just cigarettes for the moment?

There is a thing in the whole of Europe these days to basically ban smoking, alcohole is fine, it is going up but not anything like that.

When, i bought lm red today, for only 6.75??

Some shops sell at the old rate until they are out of stock.
Time for you to stock up, big time, ha ha ha ha

As an example L&M Lights have just gone up from 6.50 to 8.05 zloty.

Holly Moley!
I just gave up smoking 4 months ago. I smoked L&M, that's some price jump.
It is scandalis, even though I do not smoke anymore, there certainly seems that there s going to be prohibition on cigarettes in our mollycoddolling nanny union.

Real Estate / Current price of Homes in Poland [41]

Hello Tosca,

too many variables involved to answer that question

Yes.

the agency has Irish owners.

That explains everything, just kidding, but they are too dodgy to deal with.
My general rule is if you smell something fishy don't deal with them, of course this depends after all you are buying the house not the agent. I know I just contradicted myself but it all depends on the circumstances. 165,000zl. does sound cheap but where is it and what kind of houses is it?

Polish people do not buy trust the British seller, they know he wants to make money, It is far cheaper to buy land and build yourself.

This is the old view, buy land or get given it by your parents, first five years put in foundations then put up walls then put on roof then leave to Ireland or Britain and basically finish your house over the next 20 years and do not trust westerners, they want to make money?

My opinion, for what it is worth, is Polish homes have stabilized and in the long term will go up for the reasons stated on this thread. But the stabilization means trouble for builders and developers on new builds. The prices of labour is going up a lot, the price of materials too but also buyers are not as naive as they used to be. Buyers expect more for their money, rightfully so.

I have just recently checked out my competition and their two story houses have no stairs in them!. And there seems to be so many rip off merchants it is ridiculas.

Also finishing the house, developer standard open/closed is soon going to be a thing of the past. And finishing ground works, simple things like trees, fences and grass.

For people selling their old house I see a tendency that sellers see their next door neighbour selling for 5,000 per square metre (for a 110 m2 house), so they assume there 300m2 house is worth 1500000 Zl (not to mention the the difference in finish) and leave it on the market for years, no body buys these and people feel the market has crashed. Small manageable houses still sell.

Guess who is building smaller manageable houses then, lol.

Best of luck to you Tosca.

News / Thank you Ireland... EUCCP [81]

Did you know that almost half of the EU caught fish ending up on European plates comes from Irish waters?

I did not, I must ask a question.
Does that not mean that the fish come from the ocean, north Atlantic drift and all?

News / Thank you Ireland... EUCCP [81]

We could have licensed fishing and controlled our one true resource while building an industry.

But we did not. And I doubt if we had we would have been that successful.

27 countries, it has to fall apart eventually??

No, there are 50 states in America. Europe is small and even smaller if we do not get together.

Lisbon is the first Euro treaty that refers to the EU's population as "it's citizens". I don't wish to be it's citizen. I don't think most other Europeans want to be it's citizens, but then they were not asked.

I do think you have a very valid point that other countries did not get the opportunity to vote, sounds mad. At this stage of the game it has to be democratic.

I have no problem being a European citizen, so long as Europe stands for Democracy.

News / Thank you Ireland... EUCCP [81]

No, because we never developed our own fishing industry in the way Iceland did,

So even if we could have made our money on fish we did not.

The EU has over extended itself and become too big for it's boots in effect.

Why do you think this?

Law / Ikea suspends all investments in Poland [35]

Just a quick question, didn't the law change on this? End of last week. And Ikea are going a head? I was talking to someone about it and they mentioned it had just changed.

Now we will have to start a new thread about how bad Ikea are for killing all the moma and papa shops. Just kidding.
