Life / How to Survive on a Minimum Wage in Poland? [45]

Do I really want to stay here?

Obviously I can not answer that for you but we can talk about it.
If you take a job for 2000PLN are there job permotion opportunities?.
I think a young enthusiastic guy like yourself is exactly what Poland needs right now but I understand your dilemma.
I know this is not of much consequence to your story but is 2000PLN after taxes more than you would have got several years ago for doing the same job?

I hope that you find a way to create your life here in Poland and bring your experiences with you.
You have an advantage of experience that I am sure will help you do better than your competitors.

Life / The people of Poland are wonderful!!! [26]

So you are telling that the guards are great because they allowed you to skip the line bypassing the poor Ukrainians?

Yes

they're treated is not very edifying (like having to go to Kiev for a visa and wait for a week when Kiev is farther from their hometown than Warsaw).

The guys post had nothing to do with that, youz are just looking for the dark cloud.
This guy met some nice people, what the hell do you want, for him to apologise? for the guards resignation? or for the guys in the cue not to be nice?. This is not about all guards or Poland's stance on foreigners, this is about some guys helping a stranger.

This guy BLS is a first hand witness to the events, now you can make up all sorts of BS as to the reasons why they were nice to him but seens how he was there, I would go with his version of events.

why not just open the gate and let you walk through..

Well being nice does not mean not having a laugh and making him jump through some hoops or in this case over a fence.

A book won't stop you from hearing the other passengers' mobiles.

I meant a big thick book to bash them over the head with.

That's what they are for :)

Yeeeeah.... ok, as I said, it is probably another topic.

who play music loud on mobile phones on public transport.

Aren't you impressed? most people are, even if they do not say so (I hate those idiots too).

An mp3 player is a must for someone who uses public transport,

I find a book a great one for that.

to gyms

Definitely,

supermarkets

? not sure about that, I find that head phones isolate us. I was recently walking in Dublin and was looking for a particular town (Dundrum) which had been moved down the road about a mile (?) and everyone was in their own world with their headphones on. E.g., "excuse me?" no answer.... wave my hand in front of them (admittedly not much tack but I was going for a meeting)... not very nice.

Infact I generally think these new technologies alienate us but that is another topic.

Sennheiser

Isn't that the German flue? :)

I agree, the sound is in the headphones.

It comes from an era - long time ago :) - they still made things to last.

This is it, we live in a disposable world.
Instead of buying a ipod/phone, I have gone the opposite direction and started back my record (vinyl) collection but yet have to get a record player.

Buy fresh veg from the farmer's market "stary kleparz" boil some water make a big pot of stew or soup, it'll last for days and tastes best on the third day but to be thrown out after that.

If you eat meat, buy chicken or lamb etc on the bone and boil the bones to make stock.
And porridge, nothing wrong with it and it fills you for half the day. Rice or potatoes are cheap and if you get good potatoes leave the skin on (it's where most of the nutrition is).

Go to art galleries opening new exhibitions for free wine (it tastes like vinegar, but beggers and choosers).

Love / I like this Polish girl, but she doesn't get my... English sense of humor [124]

ermm i dont think so me and her always joke with each other..i just took it a step to far

Everybody knows that.

im not single thats why i thought this was not appropriate lol.

That is obvious, you are both just chatting. That is not the issue.

nothing to do with my nationality.

I do think there are massive differences in all nationalities as regards sense of humour. It may be one of the biggest difference, to get the humour you must get the country's history, mentality etc...

but then if i was single and the guy started fantasising about me

I though it was obvious that irishdeano was just playing/joking

I do not mean to embarrass anyone, It just read like an example.

Life / The people of Poland are wonderful!!! [26]

I remember years ago (About 5) a Polish boarder guard was threatening not to let me back into Poland because I did not have my temporary working visa with me (or something), going to Czech but the gobsh1te that said it was not there on our return, so no problem.

I find a lot of the time if you give a small man (in personality not in stature) a stamp or a gun, the power goes straight to their heads

I have just been playing chess with a Polish friend of mine who is a truck driver, he was waiting for it to be loaded.

He drives to Ukrain often, he does all the nesaccary stuff on the Polish side when driving but when he is in the Ukrainian side a Black BMW with tinted windows meets him and he is told to stop for nothing. The first time this happened he almost sh1t himself, the police had wanted to stop him but he kept driving, he thought they would shoot him but the BMW stopped the police instead, now all it takes is a telephone call.

He also says that the Ukrainian truck drivers are the most friendly in Europe and they help him if he is broken down and have all the tools to do so.

I have not been to Ukraine yet.
I have just driven through Europe and I love that there are no more borders.
The worst boarder crossing I was in was the South African/Botswana one, holly sh1t, these guys with guns came on the train and threw my friends passport on the gound shouting it was a fake and demanded money, when we refused to pay, they tried to drag my mate off the train, he held on for dear life, then the guy stamped our passports and said he'd be back. When he came back, we told him it was too late, he'd stamped our passports.

I met many great people on that particular trip.

Actually I really like Polish humour in films, there are many great films and Alternative 4 is great.
I find that during communism, Polish people had to be very clever to hide the fact they were taking the mickey out of it, so they were very creative and funny but today's crap on telly is rubbish.

I suppose difficult times give birth to creativity.

im a good boy ;)

I think so

Life / The people of Poland are wonderful!!! [26]

Fair enough,
It is great when people extend their help to a stranger.
Especially when confronted with guards.
There is always a lot of scare mongering about travelling and it is good to hear a positive story.
I suppose humans enjoy reading about peoples misery more.

Real Estate / I have just recently bought a house in Poland... [20]

lilisdad [Guest]

Hello lilisdad
And welcome to the Polish Forum

I do not understand what you have written, it does read like you bought the place without looking at it.
Even the alternative does not make sence, you viewed the place and bought it, so what's the problem? Dead chickens or not?
And I really don't get your point, so what if the house was on the market for 6 months and it was really 2 years and there had been over 60 viewings not 20 like you were told?

You got a cheap house, I am happy you made it a home.

I know what you mean but I would not walk in with a large amount of money and expect to get far down the street, maybe i am just being paranoid.

If you shop around you can get very good competitive rates from some Kontors.

News / Poles Ranks First in Computer Coding [47]

scorpio

I once did a computer program thing on my Commador 64.
It was a big long list that I found in a computer magazine, it did not say what it was, all it said was type this in and watch it go. So it took three days to type the bloody thing, checking and double checking and then i pressed enter and a blank screen came up, and then I read it again "And watch it go".

Love / Plastic boobs in Poland [44]

Yes, if you compare Polish with all the people in on this planet, they are very rich.
As for boob jobs i do not care, if they are real or fake, although I really don't think I have ever felt fake ones, not that it makes a difference.

Although I think the whole plastic surgery gets out of hand, with advertisements for parents to give their daughters boob jobs for their birthday.

Life / Paying bribes in Poland - necessity or a luxury? [41]

I have been stopped 8 times by the police in Lithuania and I have paid 6 bribes. M

I have never had to bribe anyone in Poland but when I first came here 6 years ago, it was common. Women would not have to pay, if they were good looking all they had to do was smile, if not cry, same effect anyway.

And as a developer Wroclaw Boy have you never had to pay someone to get connected to the gas/elec etc?
I actually have not myself but people tell me it is common.
There has been, as I am sure you know, a massive clamp down on corruption in Poland (Lithuania need to do the same) and this is probably the biggest problem any Ex-communist country has, so well done Poland.

Life / Comedy of communist absurd 'Mis' by Bareja [13]

Mis

Mis is a great film and to be honest i was lucky enough to have someone translate the parts they did not say.
It is difficult to get some of the subtitles in another culture, especially with something as serious and funny as Mis.
The were playing it in the cinema in the market square a few months ago with English subtitles. Beside pub bambusum.
I did not have the chance to see it though but it does exist.

Travel / Driving from Faro, Portugal to Krakow, any advice? [21]

I can't get swimming this river out of mind and it was 10 years ago.

This sentence made such an impression on me that I went off route to see it and I was gob smacked and as promised a photo for you (somewhere on this post (hopefully) and if you want more i need some time and I can email it to you, it was a tad too cold to swim in this time of year but the Autumn colours are wonderful.

From Zurich I went towards Austria and got bored so went off the motorway again and stumbled across the Alps ha ha ha, I have a million photos and it is of course autumn so the trees on the snow peaked mountains look fantastic.

I have just been to Portugal, Malaga(rain) Barcelona , France along the Riviera, Monaco (Monte-Carlo) (which is nothing like county Carlo), through Italy to the Swiss Alps and then to Austria, Czech and happy to be back here in Poland.

Thanks for all the advise especially to Barney :)

Some people love it some people hate it - it's a big city :) Im still undecided so Im going back - with friends this time! Did you not see the Sagrada Familia? For me that was the most amazing thing, oh and people watching on the Las Ramblas at night - did you see the prostitutes LOL :)

I loved it, i could live there.
I didn't see the Sagrada familia, my brother already gave me sh1t for not seeing it, ha ha ha ahhh well next time.

Las Ramblas was great and the windy side streets are great!.
I did not notice any prostitutes, again next time ha ha ha.
I don't know much about wines but house always taste great there!

I had a ball, as the man says "It's a wonderful world"!!!

<hr />

I had the intention of somehow joining this trip through Europe to Poland and the whole E.U. thing but I honestly can't think of any, I am probably just knackered but if I can't I will not post anything further, after all this is a Polish Forum.

Travel / Driving from Faro, Portugal to Krakow, any advice? [21]

So I am just south of Barcelona, this place rocks. I am hung over to bitz so this'll be short.
Stayed in Villamora in Portugal. Bit of an older crowd there, golfers mainly so not really my cup of tea. Went down to the most westerly point of Europe, beautiful Ocean beaches. In Faro I went to some mad Church with dead monks sticking out of the walls, apparently to make it more holy, strange but facinating.

Went up to Malaga, I arranged a to stay in a friends flat there, not my favorite place, tourists, flats and it poured with rain, which makes me unlucky I guess, as it is never suposed to rain there.

So I did a 10 hour drive and am staying just south of Barcelona, in a flat on the beach. get the train into and back out of Barcelona, now this is my type of place, it is groovey here, drinking fine wines in stoney courtyards in the windy streets in the old town YES YES YES. I could live here. But as all good things must come to an end, onwards and upwards, going North now, past Barcelona, to find some sleepy little fishing village to nurse my hang over...

I Have an automatic, with cruse control and a GPS, it is not realy driving at all, more like steering. I am used to manual and ripped maps and I always thought cruse cotrol was something else.

The sun is flooding the sky and I must go now.
will give a btter review later, with pics.
Tapas rock!
OK, later PF

I drove north along coastal roads I thought only existed in 007 movies, I went for a swim only to be attacked by a giant squid, it was gigantic!. there were many people who were not content with surfing or paraglyding but had to do both at the same time. basically they got pulled along on a surfboard by a parashoot and I tried not to get tangled up, it looked like great fun.

So in Barcelona I went to ther Gaudí musem. although it is unique at 16Euro it was very very pricey.
So now I am in a picturesque village called cadaques, where Salvidor Dali lived and they don't let you forget it. I went to the Dali museum it cost 11 Euro but was well worht it, luckily I got there early as I noticed the herds of tour groups entering as I left.

I get the feeling France will be more expensive than here. I must go now I think the guy who runs the internet cafe wants to go to sleep or something...

Travel / Poor Edward in Kraków [28]

I had assumed my trip was going to be more polish than it was.

mac Donalds.... not very Polish.
What was your favorite Vodka?

There is a free bus from the airport to the express train (cost 150euro or something) but it does not seem to be well posted.

Next time you come over, PF could give you a few tips on the basics.

Good of you to tell us all about it.
