Life / Polish Songs related to Hope [29]

he was great but also a drunk

Good point.

A quote from wikipedia:

By the mid-1970s, Vysotsky had been suffering from alcoholism for quite some time. Many of his songs from the period deal – either directly or metaphorically – with alcoholism, insanity, mania, and obsessions.

Michal, miranda asked you a question :)

History / Jewish love towards Poles [389]

The decision not to bomb Auschwitz seems to have little to do with what was more crucial or not.General George Patton even diverted U.S. troops to rescue 150 Lippizaner horses in Austria.

But don't take my word for any of the above. Read an article based on someone who was actually there. He was a US Senator in 1960's/1970's and he was a pilot flying over the area:

judaism.about.com/od/holocaust/a/aush_nobomb.htm

History / Jewish love towards Poles [389]

The Allies were reguraly bombing some oil refineries not far Auschwitz in the summer and fall of 1944. On Dec. 26 1944 McGovern's squadron dropped 50 tons of bombs on oil facilities in Monowitz, an industrial section of Auschwitz.

I know the bombing may have prevented the Hungarian jews from their fate

I think in this respect I have a feeling that Hungarian Jews could have been helped prior to them being deported to Auschwitz. Have you read "Eichman in Jerusalem"?. The author was called a "sef-hating Jew" for that book. It is based on facts.

I agree that bombings would have not prevented all the killings, but it would certainly seroisuly disrupt them. Maybe a million Jews would have been save, maybe only 100,000. However calous it may sound, there is after all a sort of life and death economy. Someone one sacrifices a few to save many.

Who knows, perhaps Jews would be then more in a position to join the Polish underground. But that's just speculaton.

As for the RAF casualties, well... war is war, so of course there would be killed pilots. Brits participated in the fighting to liberate some on the continent (more than one actually), but also those from the other continents sacrificed their lives for the Brits.

Life / Luxury cars in Poland [42]

I'm not really a car enthusiast. A car takes me from point A to point B, and sometimes to point C. I do appreciate some of the little comforts of some cars, such as as.s warmers and some of the other conveniences.

I see youre from Niagara sup bro Im from Brantford

sup man.
I can only say one thing about Niagara - damn tourists ;)

How far do you think most bombing raids could get without suffering serious casulties?

At the same time the allies were bombing German industrial installations which were located deeper inside the occupied territories than Auschwitz. Those bombings, and associated casualties on the allies' side were justified by the fact that diminishing Germany's industrial potential the casualties of war would be reduced too.

Why should more allied lives have been thrown away on something that would only have been a symbolic gesture.

Not a symbolic gesture at all. About 1 million people were killed in Auschwitz since the time allies decided not to bomb it. I'm not sure how you can call the possibility of saving 1 million of lives a symbolic gesture. I can't help but remind you of a statement attributed to Stalin: "one death is a tragedy, a milion deaths is statistics". It's a pitty that Stalins approach resonates in your post.

A lovely idea in hindsight,if not thought through but, think about it,with a clear head and naff all would have been achieved.

See, you're not reading with understanding. It's not a hindsight. This is exactly what Polish underground and Polish Jews wanted in 1940's. Bush's comment is only one more confirmation that what they thought would have been appropriate then is still considered appropriate.

BTW,please dont take a moral high ground just because you can trot out that Poland saved the most jews

You're doing it again. This thread is not about my moral ground or yours. We're discussing history. If you can't hold your horses and always need somone to focus on personally, why don't you give yourself a wank. Then come back, all relaxed and we can chat about history - not about me, or you.

Deal?

UK, Ireland / BBC Prime going Polish [17]

holy maccaroni, that's pretty steep, I didn't know that.
Still, kinda makes me wonder about BBC world service that is broadcast all over the world, including countries where people pay no such fees.

Things are more complicated these days ;)

Lucky that I found a way of getting the BBC on the Internet, although it's illegal!!

How can this be illegal?
Isn't BBC funded by taxpayers?

Life / Do Polish people tend to stick together? [49]

On many occassions people around me, upon learning I am Polish, told me they knew a Pole, or two, or that their wive's mom is Polish and so on and so forth. Often they offered to help me get in touch with them "so you can speak in your own language". I thanked politely but inside I thought: if my main worry were to be speaking Polish on a daily basis I would have stayed in Poland.

Go for it.
Especially larger cities, with a a cosmopolitan touch such as Gdansk, are always good places for the out of the ordinary in the art of mixing the edible things.

it is a sad state of affairs when politics override(s) that concern. How about the current bloodshed George?

No question about George's highly selective sorrow. What I quoted isn't meant to be a comment on Dubya though.

History / Jewish love towards Poles [389]

Hhm,yes, lets hear the full story, this was while europe was under nazi occupation, what the fek else do you think could have been done,a fekkin commando raid to free 6 million people, dont be an ar se,you write well but your logic is flawed to say the least.....

Clearly, you are not in a position to judge my logic if you do not understand what I write. Karski did not ask to free 6 million Jews. There weren't 6 millions Jews in Poland at any time anyway.

What I wrote was clear, and just today there was another confirmation of what Poles and Jews asked the West - bomb Auschwitz to avoid further extermination:

President Bush had tears in his eyes during an hour-long tour of Israel's Holocaust memorial Friday and told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that the U.S. should have bombed Auschwitz to halt the killing, the memorial's chairman said.

History / Jews...and their Polish experience [520]

am so confused with any neo nazis in Poland. Don't their parents or others say anything. Its one thing to not like Jews but why have Hitler as your hero.

One think I liked about communist Poland was the law against anything nazi. People could get a lengthy jail sentence just for a nazi salute.

I agree, ShelleyS is wrong but you need to supply a reason why.

The reason is individual circumstance. Most of the time it has to do with the ability to speak the language. During my first year in the US I met zero Poles, only spoke to my parents on the phone twice a month. They live in Poland.

Later I met some Poles but without a whole lot of socializing. The same in Canada. I met a few Poles here because I shop in Polish food stores. Just like I meet Ukrainians, Pakistanis or Irish. I understand the language so I know they are Polish. They rarely know I am :)

I think I went to a party organized by Poles perhaps 3 times in 15 years. Most participants were local people (non-Polish origin). I am a lone Pole where I work (about 150 emloyees).

Strangely, my daughter who was born in the US knows many more Poles in Canada than I do.

Life / "I can spot a Pole a mile away" - Polish fashion? [146]

kurna on my last visit - is that a word that actually means something else cf. kurczę?

kurny - filled with smoke
kurna chata - a shed/house without a chimney, and this is where the use of kurna comes form. Not sure if this is a good description, but I'd say "kurna" is an euphemism for "kurwa". Likewise kurcze.

Others which come to mind are:

kurde + (bele or mole or balans)
kuchnia
kurczaki

That used to be a tell-tell sign of someone fresh off the boat from an Eastern European country.

That's what Americans say about Canadians :)

Travel / Best time to visit Zielona Gora? [11]

yes, in the midst of a vineyard, all close to the city center. Not that Zielona Gora is that large. The city center is a nice area too. Some shopping, restaurants etc.

You can find more on the city's website: eagle.um.zielona-gora.pl/UMEN/

UK, Ireland / What's So Great About The UK? [416]

me and my family have been paying tax our whole lives

In most countries people pay taxes only if they have income. I didn't realize in UK babies can be gainfully employed so they can pay taxes on their income.
