Life / Sending Post inside Poland. [13]

All I can say here is that I've had parcels that didn't arrive, but only when sent from the UK.
I've also had letters, which had either been damaged or opened, arrive in a sealed plastic bag. The contents were intact.
All in all I don't trust the Polish mail service 100%
When mail dosen't arrive it is the sender who should start proceedings, as they have the receipt of postage. And you might also find that the Polish mail service is not responsible for mail registered in the UK. Maybe that's why personal mail disappears.

I can only balance this with similar experiences in the UK many years ago.

Since it ain't going to happen, I'll say this anyway.

There must be many people like me who log-in, check a few posts and then wander off to do something different. All without logging-off. Any search or request will only reveal the last post. It won't tell you if they are paying attention or using the forum.

Eek! That's like stalking! What forum is that?

It's a soap forum. They have a list of features as long as your arm. They are thinking of adding some sort of my-space feature [another one I won't use]

I think things are just fine as they are here on PF.

USA, Canada / Importing a car from the US to Poland [12]

You can. But after some time you have to re-register it to become legal.

I would just buy a new or nearly new car when I got here. And cut out shipping costs.

Or buy a car in the [Polish] family's name, let them look after it and then use it when you get here.

I don't see the need for change, but if it happens I'll not object.

Well I don't know of any forums who tell you who is viewing each topic

I belong to another forum where you can track people. I never have a need to use such functions..

For people who are lurking. Why expose them ?

For people who are posting. Press refresh a bit more often.

Love / Mexican in love with Polish girl. Need advice on what to do. [49]

Jonny,

This might seem like a dumb question, but would you be traveling on a Mexican passport or a US passport ?
If you want to visit either the UK or Poland you will have to make enquieries at the relevant embassy.
If they don't let you into the UK or Poland, and you are sent back, you'll have big problems back in the USA.

I think you have to resolve your status in the USA before you do anything else.

Language / [Phrase of the Day]: English to Polish [37]

This thread is not progressing the way I had hoped. Time for a re-think.

If you have a phrase that you think will benefit others. Please write it.

I don't want a list from a book. I want real phrases that may be able to help in certain situations. Filling in forms, telephone conversations. understanding Polish language websites, meeting people etc.

ex.When filling in a form/document: use block capitals.

Block capitals = Drukowane litery

Love / Mexican in love with Polish girl. Need advice on what to do. [49]

You cannot come to the UK and get married to her as she is not a UK citizen so whoever told you that is wrong.

It is possible to marry a Polish person in the UK. It might not be possible for Jonny to gain entry into the UK.

Life / The Narrator voice on Television & Films in Poland [29]

I realise that reading subtitles does require slightly more from the viewer, and this may not always be what you want.

This would answer part of it.

The other part. [based on Ryszard's post] I don't think that there is the profession of voice actor anywhere. If you are an actor you may be asked to do advertisements for example. This doesn't make you a third rate actor.

It takes a certain amount of skill to narrate or do over the top dubbing. Firstly, if you don't have the voice, you don't get the work. Secondly, you need to be able to read. Think about news readers, they can't afford to make mistakes. In the recording studio you very often have the director, engineer, narrator and sometimes client. This costs money and there is no time for time wasters. There are many other factors that make this job difficult for the ordinary guy on the street. That's why they don't do it.

That is one problem, but the other is the dubbing is in Poland unpopular. So unpopular that there is no such profession as "voice actor" in Poland. Those who are making some dubs are usually second (or even third) rate, poorly payed and poorly doing the job actors.

I disagree.

Life / The Narrator voice on Television & Films in Poland [29]

mangled "french" was translated into Polish...

This was done in mangled Polish.

It must have worked because the family enjoyed it and I'm sure the series was repeated at least once.

UK, Ireland / Polish friend wants to divorce in the UK - possible? [6]

Since marriage took place in Poland it has to be finalized there. Oh yes indeedy it has.

This seems logical as all Polish documents would have to be amended. ID card etc.

Life / Local contact to set up Sky TV in Wroclaw [7]

First I'd better clarify. We have two seperate systems: 1. an HDTV nbox, which has Sky News and 2. Canal+ through satellite.
I never use the nbox system.
Canal+ has CNN, BBC World, France24, Euronews, Al Jazeera [english]. These are all English news channels.
Film channels: A couple of canal+ film channels, Hallmark, HBO, HBO2, HBO Comedy [sometimes this is only in Polish].
Other channels: BBC Prime [a chance to see all those programmes you missed last year] National Geographic, Discovery, MTV, Eurosport, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, Zone Club, Zone Reality,

There are a few others. It depends on the package you opt for.
There are plenty of German, Italian, French and Arabic channels too.

It's very important that you check the package you opt for and make sure that they can give you these programmes in English.

When you get to Wroclaw. PM me and we'll talk about it over a pint.
