News / What needs to happen in the world so that Poland and Russia form alliance? [297]

Look at vodka as a guard dropper, blueboy. It's all good until sb starts reeling and losing it. That's when randomness creeps in and people run their mouths.

What part of their history do you have issues with, CK? They have fought invaders and us Scots applaud that. Sorry blueboy, you know what I mean tho. The difference is that most Scots have moved on that bit better.

Food / Is it just me, or is the Polish diet rather unhealthy? [119]

Exactly right. It's a matter of adjusting and keeping an open mind. There was a Lithuanian option, cepalini or sth like that, that the tour guide wouldn't stop talking about. It was their answer to pierogi. It was dripping in fat and, although fairly tasty, was nothing to write home about.

Polish blood has prevailed!! The Serbs are even more Slavic than you are. You have more Mongoloid denominations, 5 of which are in Siberia I think.

Blueboy, right enough. I did the same with English guys I have met, we did it jokingly though. We are all aware of the history but people are people. There isn't the bitterness like there is between Poles and Ruskies. We are all Brits at the end of the day.

Get that salt down ye :) Killing two birds with one stone. The Poles prefer those 2Kac tablets, I've never tried them.

You should try some risotto with prawns, peas and chicken. The buillion/stock cube is important.

It's mince n tatties tonight. Gotta love gravy too

Yeah, the genius of Polish cooking is its simplicity. They need to overlook the standard options and look to their spices and accoutrements for fish as you said. The problem is that they don't venture off the beaten track. If they do, it's often by default. My fiancee's mum served sth equivalent to Admiral's/Fisherman's Pie by Youngs. I couldn't get enough of it. A lovely cheesy sauce. The fish from the Baltic is apparently stuff to die for.

Well, Polish food is better suited for winter. On a hot summer's day, I look at pierogi (slang for pus*y but I mean the food), bigos and gołąbki and think 'nah'. BBQ's are do-able as they are outdoors and you can enjoy some beer too. Sitting in some milk bars here can be weird. They look at me like I'm brown-skinned, bearded and with a turban.

Turkey is legendary. I've spent the last 2 Xmas's here and have had it up to here with carp. I'm off home to enjoy a quality Xmas meal this time round. Roast beef and Colmans would be a good lunch for me tomorrow. They have Colmans at the deli on the rynek here.

Travel / Alcohol on trains in Poland [40]

A story told the world over. Still, we don't have it as bad as the Americans. I worry about my friend who worked here in Gliwice. He was fine in Albania due to what Bush did but he's in Saudi Arabia now, an alleged ally but founder of Wahhabism. All is takes is for him to run into a few radicals and he's toast.

Anyway, bring back beer on the trains. Beer and a bento, I loved that in Japan :)

Good stuff! The full English breakfast in the morning to keep you going til the stew or casserole comes round, the stuff of legends! It's interesting that you mention winter. It's moving in that direction as the nights are closing/drawing in quicker but it's still officially summer.

Then doesn't it say sth about the responsibility level of some Polish citizens if they can't sit and drink a beer without being pests?

It's a simple case of putting some cops on trains to monitor any rowdiness.

How did we get from trains to weapons? The last time I checked, alcohol doesn't come out of a gun ;)

Very true. If the logic was sound then, it's sound now. The principle remains the same. I liked going to the Warsu restaurant section for a beer and a bite. It's a good chance to chat with some folk. I stayed for a couple with guys and we had a laugh.

Irresponsible? That's a matter for enforcement and putting police on trains to patrol. NOT for banning adult freedoms.

I'm for alcohol being on trains. It boils down to responsibility and you cannot punish those who just want a drink or 4 to pass the time. Anyway, it'll just mean that people get tanked up even more at a pub before their journey.

News / WHY DOES POLAND, EU PERMIT FLOOD OF CHINA JUNK? [40]

Mr Polophob? Chinese imports and trade really help Polish markets. TVN ran a segment on it some time back. Alex Salmond of Scotland knows this too, he went there not too long ago.

What junk? By virtue of being mass produced doesn't make it junk. Provided the relevant quality standards are in place, what's the problem?

Work / Teaching English in Gliwice. Schools? Can I start after September? [28]

What compounds the matter is that, after a DELTA or an MSc, you think much more like a teacher. You have read Harmer and Swan and digested teaching methodologies to the extent that you see them in your sleep. The problem lies in the fact that the bosses of the school make decisions in the interests of maximising profits which don't square with the fundamental ethos of teaching. You will no doubt remember the inception of General Management, delph. My Dad was furious that monetary concerns were promoted at the expense of teaching ones. An unforgivable sacrifice!

Truth be told, the more intricate machinations of the teaching process are shoved aside as getting bums on seats requires charisma and a monkey's ability to memorise a few tenses. I've noticed that, charisma and the rudiments of the language get most through with some aplomb.

He's a communist era Pole, anything foreign has the ą, ę hoity-toity quality. That has now been changed for the 'My mamy najlepsze' way.

No worries. I know Sikornik, it's where I go swimming and where a few teachers used to live. It's a nice enough part of town. Gwardii Ludowej is a top spot, I cycle past there.

Johnnie Walker Black, LOL. Take it from a Scotsman, it's no great shakes. I've tried 3 grades up, JW Blue Label. He is drinking the 4th of 5 labels. Blue-Gold-Green-Black-Red. Try pointing that out to him.
