News / Euro Elections 4th June - Who will you vote for ? [110]

Amazingly enough the BNP have just taken a seat in the European parliament...Was gained in Yorkshire and Humberside. I have to say Im pretty shocked!

It's a horrible thought for sure, but I'm sort of shocked but not surprised.

I saw Nick Griffin on Sky News earlier saying how he can tell potential BNP members "just by looking". It says it all really.

There were plenty of non-racist, anti-european candidates to choose from, so it's very sad that the BNP have had success.

I've had it on all night on BBC...I reckon they'll get a high percentage in Manchester (no I didnt vote for them, UKIP here)

UKIP here too.

Yes I know you're in Poland, but it's a European election and surely you had voting rights for the area in Poland you live in ?

EU citizens vote in the UK for Euro elections for the constituency that they live in.....don't they ?

Tactical voting is common for sure. It is a very progressive process for a party to build up their credentials but somebody has to start the ball rolling for them.

I don't know too much about the party you voted for.

The UK Independence Party ukip.org are, as far as I can tell, against mass immigration and not in favour of everything EU, without being a bunch of racists.

I don't know a great deal about them either, other than what the leaflets shoved through the door told me, but I felt that they reasonable choice for a protest vote that wasn't going to be totally wasted.

Who did you vote for ? Was it an easy choice to make ?

I'm going to vote UKIP, its nice to know i can vote against europe without having to vote for the BNP.

That will be my reason for voting for them too.

It's not that I want people kicked out of the country or think that foreigners should be bowing and scraping at my feet, but I think that the mainstream parties (and especially the Government) need a real kick in the spuds. They need to be forced into listening what the British people think about their current policies on Europe and Labour's almost hatred of the British.

You will not vote against Europe, you will vote against the EU. If you put equality sign between the EU and Europe many honest Europeans might be offended. Please be more sensitive...

I'm not sure what you mean with that last bit.

UK, Ireland / Polish Spitfire shoots down BNP [63]

Exactly, sorry if you took it the wrong way Mister H... really :)

Apology accepted :-)

My "lumping in" refers to why a person from my home country seeks a Polish forum to express his views on immigration.
And I was slightly swayed on my judgement on him in his postings in other threads, still none of us are perfect.

My reasons for joining the forum were similar in that I wanted to engage in sensible and constructive debate about EU immigration. I think it is perfectly possible to discuss it rationally. Of course, it's not the only subject up for debate, but it's too big to ignore.

Ok, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I still think though that his "lumping in" of people like British Empire in with the likes of noimmigration seems rather unfair. Noimmigration was just a badly informed, poorly educated w@nk stain that hated everybody. Although he did have occasional flashes of rational thinking that made him almost credible, it never lasted very long and he is, quite rightly, banned.

From what I've read of British Empire, he may have strong views, but he doesn't seem to be another noimmigration.

That's a Slovakian proverb.

Thanks for the explanation, but it still seems to have been used as an insult and ukpolska doesn't seem to want to comment either way.

It sounds more like intellectual snobbery.

If you believe this then fine, I am not going to change your mind am I!!!

I always find it interesting how some react when people want to have an informed discussion on immigration, rather than the usual mud slinging. I get the impression that ukpolska prefers mud slinging and doesn't really know how to react when someone that isn't "just another bigot" wants to challenge their views.

It's like Caroline Flint (Government European Jobsworth) on "Question Time" the other evening. Someone mentions immigration and the importance of speaking fluent English and she cries "racist!" and everyone beats a hasty retreat.

Once again the chance to have a proper debate on a very important subject is lost because someone in the Government is having their policies questioned and they don't like it.

I know what your thinking ukpolska and i can assure you your way off the mark,

I think you're right and he probably thinks the same of me too. He's way off the mark their also.

I tend to avoid TV programmes like that as they make me too annoyed.

It doesn't surprise me that people claim for dead relatives and people in other countries. Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to stuff like that.

What these programmes uncover is just the tip of the iceberg.

...it is obvious the welfare system is not (to quote Ali G) "Well Fair"

As ShelleyS pointed out before, it all comes down to that basic sense of pride and dignity and whether or not a person wants to support themselves.

I've had some pretty ropey jobs in the past and I would rather do that then claim the dole. I've always thought that you can get a better job much more easily when you already have one and don't have lots of gaps on your CV.

Having said that, plenty of people blag their way into jobs and always seem to come up smelling of roses.

yeh I know ....its cos of where you live. That's the flip side of lefty "B-right-on" party town..

I've never quite seen the appeal myself. People always rave about Brighton, but I think it's very overrated. It's all trendy loft apartments, Starbucks and themed gastro-pubs, all trying to cover up the homelessness and the drugs.

hmmmmmm....New Labour has nothing on you...:}

Ten plus years of "New Labour" has really taken its toll on me I can tell you.

I don't like to see people in a bad way and struggling, not at all, but people have to be helped to help themselves and eventually (ideally) support themselves.

I know it won't always be possible, but what we seem to have now is a society where people don't have to take responsibility for their own lives. Instead they can just drift through life, having relationships and children along the way and everything will be ok, because the country will sort them out.

I know it's not everyone and I know many are in situations they didn't plan or intend, but I just feel very weary of it all.

Hmm yeh Brighton is full of dross youre right I'm afraid.......( I live there too..well, Hove actually)

I'm in Hove too, near the station......factually !

But people who just don't want to work...get loads.

I agree and it must seem very unfair to be on the receiving end when you just want a bit of help rather than endless hand-outs.

Part of the problem is that being on benefits as some kind of lifestyle choice isn't seen as anything to be ashamed of these days.

There's nothing scandalous about a teenage mum having two or three kids from different random blokes, never getting a job and raising them on benefits in a council house. Nobody seems to raise eyebrows to anything anymore and it's all so "normal".

Although I'm a hopeless leftie at heart, I can't help but think that we need a heartless, right-wing bunch of nasties in power to really shake the benefits system up.

In Hove darling, are u sure? Did you spend some time there signing on then?...:)

Hehehe !

I've not had to sign on for many a long year, I'm glad to say and I was talking about the Brighton Job Centre in Edward Street, next to the American Express building.

I had to step over the poor unfortunates congregating on the steps of the Job Centre on my way into work (to work for Amex, not the Jobcentre!)

UK, Ireland / Polish Spitfire shoots down BNP [63]

I have a friend who simply works to pay her bills (she earns more than minimum but gets no tax credits, she's on the threshold), but she would rather be working and have a bit of dignity! It's about attitude really.

That's pretty much what it all comes down to at the end of the day, however, the system should not make it so easy to claim all these benefits.

I read an article written by someone famous that had to claim some JSA during a real low point in her career and on spotting her familiar face in the dole office, someone said:

"Claiming benefits is for those that are either fresh off the boat or long-term alcoholics and not for the likes of you"

Having seen the sorts of people that lurch in and out one of my local Job Centres, where it's all either Glaswegians clutching bottles of "White Lightning" with their dogs with strings for leads, all hurling abuse at one another while blind drunk at lunchtime or it's foreigners that don't speak English, but have 3 or 4 kids in tow, I think that just about sums it up.

Personally, I'd fire-bomb the place during whatever the 'peak-time' is for signing-on.

Anyway, I'm no economist, but surely the 'pot' all this money is coming from must be all but empty by now ? What with all the bank bail-outs and higher unemployment (therefore more benefits payments but less NI and tax revenue to pay for them) we must be heading for a time when the criteria to claim benefits will have to be tightened, simply because there isn't enough money to pay them out ?

Something has gone drastically wrong with our welfare system.

News / Euro Elections 4th June - Who will you vote for ? [110]

UKIP is who I am voting for and I say the sooner the better we're out of the EU, it wont be soon enough for ME!!!

I can't see that happening. I think that the most we can hope for is an end to some of the craziness. Even that seems a long way off.

I suppose this shows the depth of disillusionment with EU as it is today..

Indeed.

Am I anti-european in terms of its people and culture etc No, of course not. Am I anti-european in terms of an open-door policy on immigration and so on ? Yes, very much so.

Where's 'Screaming' Lord Sutch and his Monster Raving Loony Party when you need them? ;) ;)

Didn't he top himself ?

This lot are anti EU as well

I hadn't heard of these people before and have had a quick look and they seem to be YET ANOTHER split to the euro-sceptic vote.

All these fringe parties seem to achieve is helping the usual suspects hold onto power. Half a dozen people voting for half a dozen different UKIP-esque parties doesn't really help. They should unite and unite the support with them.

I don't know about minor British parties, however from those noticeable UKIP sound like the only voice of reason. I don't approve their policy at every point, simply the rest don't deserve a vote so much.

I think that when it comes to a party that wants to apply the brakes a little with Europe, I feel that UKIP seem a reasonable choice.

They're not hung up on all the racial stuff like the BNP are and I would like to see UKIP become a real voice in Europe.

UK, Ireland / How do I get a replacement copy of my Polish Citizenship in London? [5]

Just wondering if somebody can give me some advice. I was told by the Polish Consulate in Sydney that I was successful in obtaining my Polish Citizenship, however, they sent it to the wrong address (an old address of mine and they had been advised not to send it there!).

It's beyond belief that something so important can end up going to an old address. Do you know if it was sent recorded delivery and would someone have signed for it ?

Make sure you claim compensation for the time and effort spent getting it replaced.

Are you moving to Poland then ?

UK, Ireland / Buying a used car from a private seller in UK. What is the law if... [18]

Sadly not.

Sorry to hear your friends got ripped off. You might be able to try the "Small Claims Court". Not sure if it would cover this situation, but could be worth finding out about. It's probably a very long and drawn out process.

There is a bit more info here:

which.co.uk/advice/taking-a-dispute-to-the-small-claims-court/your-rights/index.jsp

For future reference, it's possible to get someone from the AA or the RAC to inspect a car before purchase and is a really good idea if you know little or nothing about cars yourself (and can't find a mate that does to go with you).

Not sure how much it is, but better to be safe than sorry.

UK, Ireland / Poles claim UK benefits after working only one year instead of going home [156]

Mister H

You sure come accross as hostile. Maybe you might need to think how you frase your sentences if you do not wish to come accross as so.

If I'm coming over as hostile, maybe I've hit a nerve or two with you ?

It's not my intention to offend or upset people, quite a few on here have commented that I'm pretty balanced and fair in my opinions.

We live in Australia now and i do see large influx of Enlish ex-pats, having sold their english properties for a lot, coming here and buying regular Australians out of the market. After 3 years they can apply for Australian citizenship and claim all the benefits they want. Without ""having to pay taxes"" for 20 yrs or contributing in the past in any shape or form. Some would say that might be unfair.

With respect, you're cherry-picking what I've said to suit your own interpretation.

I'm not saying that people have to pay taxes for 20 odd years before they can consider themselves entitled to benefits etc, I'm simply saying that those that have paid in for so long are bound to feel slightly narked when people receive more, having paid in a lot less.

The entitlement to 3 bedroom house with nice garden and a nice car is not only for the British to have.

I've never said that it is, again you're being very selective. I've no issue with people having anything that they want, as long as they pay their own way and don't expect it handed to them on a plate.

PS Mister H's use of "strawberry pickers & toilet cleaners"" expressions i find very offensive.

I've re-read my posts on this thread and can't find me saying anything like that, but you have to admit that that's a reasonably fair description for large numbers of migrant workers. They're not all architects, doctors and lawyers are they ?

I would like to know whether Mister H, having been made(hipoteticaly) to leave Englang and move to, let`s say Brazil, would be able to get a banking job straight away or reverse to strawberry picking or toilet cleaning??

I'm sure if I was to try my hand working in Brazil, I would end up cleaning toilets or sweeping the streets as my language skills wouldn't qualify me for anything else. I'm perfectly happy to admit that I wouldn't get far in any country that didn't use English as the main language. I've never tried to claim anything else.

Law / Insuring a UK Citizen on a Polish registered car... [18]

I have accepted a completely daft challenge to drive a Fiat 126 from the UK to Mongolia this summer.

You clearly have time on your hands ;-)

But good luck with it !

I live on a small farm in a national park , so its quite pretty , and very peacefull... I bought this place after falling in love with Poland during long trips to Belarus and Russia in an old Landrover.. this area was about halfway between UK and Moscow so seemed like a good place to rest up.... You will be welcome here

You better be careful making sound so great or you could have a deluge :-)

UK, Ireland / Four Polish arrested over deadly Warwickshire warehouse fire [7]

Nasty business and there is no mention of any possible motive.

To have some much blood on their hands (whoever 'they' turn out to be), you would think that the guilt would be too much and they would confess.

I hope those that are responsbile get a very long time in prison.

UK, Ireland / Polish 'exodus' grinds to halt! [6]

I never really bought into the spin that the Polish and others were going home, unless it was their original intention to do so anyway.

Those with the decent jobs, such as the aviation engineer, Marcel Gierlach, quoted in the article probably has no reason to go back. As an aviation engineer, he's probably on more a lot money than the average migrant worker. Those at the bottom of the social-heap hang onto their jobs or just claim benefits if the work dries up, leaving those that can't get anything from the system to subsist until a job turns up.

Love / SOS!! I feel a little hopeless with my Polish husband... [58]

And now he got violent. So now it's only a matter of time before he will do anything even worse to you. LEAVE if you don't want to be terrorized (psychically and physically) forever.

Assuming that Eangel isn't stringing us along and she is genuine, then we have to assume that she has her own reasons for staying.

I agree that she should leave and leave now.

this is the site to domestic abuse hotline

Eangel, unless you're sure that your husband isn't checking the websites you visit (which wouldn't surprise me considering what has been said) I would suggest that you cover your tracks and delete all your cookies etc after you check such websites (including getting rid of what is being said on here).

If he is handy with his fists, don't give him any excuses to use them.
