Language / How does Polish sound to you? How to make Polish sound more pleasurable? [100]

as their English is rarely as good as the educated foreigner's command of German

This is true for east Germany, where Russian as a second language is still much more widespread than English. In western Germany, English lessons have been compulsory from 4th and 5th grade on for a very long time (since the late 1960's, AFAIK). So no, the knowledge of English amongst Germans is usually much better than the foreigners' knowledge of the German language.

is English the world's dumping ground for poor language

Of course... ;)

News / JEW YOUTH SHOULD CLEAN UP THEIR ACT IN POLAND [420]

I was talking about the total of Jewish victims

I understood that, but I've seen on various occasions already that you make a distinction between Jews and the rest of the population. IMHO, that's wrong. The Polish Jews were Polish nationals, the Dutch Jews were Dutch nationals, and so on. I just wanted to point that out.

he doesn't look like a monster as I had previously imagined him

That's the scary part, I totally agree. How civilized people could (and still can) sink to such an inhumane level is beyond me.

News / JEW YOUTH SHOULD CLEAN UP THEIR ACT IN POLAND [420]

the Jewish counter for WW2 stands on or near 6 million, whereas the the counter for Poles for that period stands at 3 million

The number of Polish victims stands at 6 million (depending on which source you use), of which 3 million were of Jewish faith. It weren't only Jews that were killed during the Holocaust.

History / Poland Around 1883 [30]

Better way is to call

In my experience, the Polish state archives are usually the way to go for genealogical research (they are very helpful and not too expensive), but I thought that the original poster wanted some information about German/Polish town names, history and so on. For that the Posen-L web site and especially its Wiki section is one of the premier sources on the web.

History / Poland Around 1883 [30]

But if you want to do historical research you have to go by the name that it was called during the time period you are interested in.

This is exactly what I'm trying to preach here all the time - often without success. There seems to be a widespread tendency in Poland to ignore historical facts when it comes to the era of the partitions.

Yep, they're (in Poland anyway) a part of the Church, a controversial loudmouth part but still a part

Hm, that's interesting. So the catholic church ignores something like this (you might want to read the comments as well):

He's a Sedevacantist

So he is a so-called Traditionalist Catholic. Do you know if these are generally accepted by the regular catholic church in Poland?

Genealogy / Where is Brazazowa or Brazazowka? [24]

literaturecat

It should be either Brazowa or Brozowa. According to Ellis Island data and some other links on the WWW, both villages are in Galicia.

they're largely harmless

Can you please explain why they seem to have the support of some catholic priests? Why is the Polish catholic church tolerating those priests? To be provocative: does the church quietly agree to the views of Narodowe Odrodzenie Polski?

News / Does Poland benefit from an Eastern, Western, or individualistic alliedship? [40]

I am aware of such

Well, why then did you claim that "All this has been done by Poland alone"?

Possible, the only ties it needs are economic ones based on industries and corporations and nothing more. Poland itself needs no outside help if so.

So, foreign investment in Poland doesn't count as help? What do you think would happen to Poland if the big corporations move on to the next source (= country) of cheap labour and low taxes?

News / Does Poland benefit from an Eastern, Western, or individualistic alliedship? [40]

All this has been done by Poland alone

Poland itself needs no outside help

All this has been done by foreign corporations and with the help of the Polish government, which created the right conditions for investment. Don't be so naive to believe that your country doesn't need any outside help. As soon as the multinational corporations decide that it's more favourable for them somewhere else they drop Poland like a hot potato. Ask the Irish about Dell... . Besides: what would happen to the unemployment rate and other indicators, if the majority of Poles from the UK, Ireland and Sweden would come home?

USA, Canada / How to find a job in the USA [39]

This might be interesting:

In Southern California the job market is much worse

The graphic in the link above shows that clearly.

USA, Canada / How to find a job in the USA [39]

There is always work for people with the right skills.

True, but compared to a few years ago not 10 people are applying for the job but 10000. The competition is much fiercer and the companies are taking advantage of this. You work longer for less money. Scrappleton is right: the job market is horrible right now. And this is also true for the self-employed.

History / Ross kemp on Polish Gangs/Nazis - Untermenschen Nazis..?? [69]

Polis nazis makes just as much sense as a black kkk member...

True, but never ever underestimate the indoctrinating power of the Nazi ideology. It worked 75 years ago, and it still works today.
