UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish migrant in UK. Ch. 3 - Food [93]

Burns stands head and shoulders above any metaphysical, homoerotic, foppish claptrap. Each to their own tho......

You can put lipstick on a pig

Or you can give her a stars and stripe bikini and a pump action rifle...........

So its like saying you prefer the park to real countryside - fair enough :-)

szkotja2007:
more culture

Bollocks!

Scottish culture is more distinct. More evident and promoted more than say, for example England.

Define English ( as opposed to British ) culture ?

Good literature, Morris dancing, cricket, erm.....what comes after that ?

Why oh why would Poles wnat to work in Scotland??

More positive attitude towards Polish people, more culture ( also a more similar culture ), better scenery, established Polish communities, etc etc etc

Why wouldn't Poles want to work in Scotland ?

Life / What's really cool about Poland - A new boy's point of view [6]

The tramps are gentlemen!

Thats something I noticed too !

Me and my mate were staying in a hotel that didn't permit smoking in the room. We like to have a drink and a smoke before we go out so we topped up a litre bottle of coke with a full bottle of whisky ( making it fairly strong )and went to the nearby park.

We were sitting sharing the bottle when one of the local gentlemen of leisure asked us for a drink because he was thirsty. We tried to explain that it wasnt just coke and there was whisky in it.

He couldnt understand us and intimated as if he was dying of thirst.

When the bottle was about a quarter full we passed it to him and he gulped down the remaining contents, finishiing it without taking a breath.

The look on his face as the whisky hit him..........took the breath out of him......once we picked him off the floor we all had a good laugh together and left him with a good impression of the Scots.

Life / Who drinks more: Poles or Russians? [50]

Scots drink 11.8 litres compared to England and Wales' 9.9.

The latest figures compiled by the World Health Organisation, placed Scotland as having the eighth highest pure alcohol consumption level, behind only Luxembourg (15.6 litres per capita); Ireland (13.7 litres); Hungary (13.6 litres); Moldova (13.2 litres); Czech Republic (13.0 litres), Croatia (12.3 litres) and Germany (12.0 litres).

Food / What is this? Dark whisky Scottish or Polish? [58]

There are plenty bonded wharehouses near where I live. A typical barrel will lose around 50 litres over a ten year period of maturation. So a wee drop going missing isn't noticed.

Its fairly easy to get some "white whisky" but jeeze.....its like petrol.

A nice blend is as good as a Malt - Black Bottle isn't too bad for the price. Any whisky over 8 years is palatable. Be interesting if the Polish distillery decide to produce aged whiskies.

Food / What is this? Dark whisky Scottish or Polish? [58]

Apparently its distilled and blended in Poland at the Zielona Góra distillery along with another called "Old Family Whisky". Both are bottled by L.W.W.G. Polmos S.A., Zielonej Górze.

Its a bit cheeky to call it "Scotch".

As Mel Gibson said - "You can take our lives but you will never take our Whisky................ Mr Suntory"

UK, Ireland / Exhibition celebrates Bonnie Prince Charlie's Polish links [18]

Trevek - I stand corrected - Thank you !

I was thinking of James Graham ( 1st Marquis of Montrose, died 1650) rather than John Graham ( Bonnie Dundee ).
James Graham was the better military man although many credit his successes to Alisdair MacColla.

I love how you defend your country!

It isn't my country that you are going on about - slag off England/London as much as you want.
Ever been to Scotland ?

So what does offend you exactly

Mundane posts along the lines of..." Woke up this morning and thought....oh no .....not again...."

cheer up girl !

Bonnie Prince Charlie - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonnie_Prince_Charlie
Highland clans rallied to his cause but the man abused their loyalty.

See also -

Bonnie Dundee - much better role model and military tactician but didn't have as much success in 1689 as Charlie did in 1745.

The outcomes of both the above were affected by circumstances outside of Scotland.

Get out of London.

Edit - That doesn't sound good ! What I mean is, cities like London are often not the best places to be sometimes. If you dont like it - move on.

History / Polish contribution to England during war [60]

Without the votes of Scottish MPs on issues that do not affect their constituents,

Yes, its a mess that should be sorted.

The political power is also weighted in favour of Scotland.

Not really, the next Goverment is likely to be a Tory one. Not likely to be in the majority north of the border are they ?

History / Polish contribution to England during war [60]

when I say British or English it's the same thing.

No. Definate distinction - 147 000 Scottish Troops died in WW1, 34 000 Died in WW2.

Would that be hydro-electro or wind power

Scotland supplies England with electricity from both. They also subsidise the UK with Oil and Gas.
