USA, Canada / Why would someone leave Poland for the US? [120]

Why does it always come down to "my country's great, yours sucks"?

North America is a great place (for the most part) and so is Poland (for the most part)

It reads like some of you are trying to justify why people left here for there.
Life was crap for a lot of people so we went to America, where there was opertunity.
Life is better here now and America is suffering.
Such is life.
I look forward to Americans coming BACK here for work and complaining :)

USA, Canada / Why would someone leave Poland for the US? [120]

My parents came here in the early 1900, they never looked back.

Yes, Poland has not changed at all since the mid 1800s.
Do you think if they looked back they would be able to see it? all they way from the U.S of A?

I would much prefer a blade of grass falling on me than a palm tree.

Life / Rudeness of polish people when they are drunk [43]

Some people just can't handle their drink.

pubs and clubs than ever before with the addition of more money in people's pockets.

Very good point.
There is a very small bar on Rynek glowna main market square in Krakow, that was the only bar open during communism, there was no need to advertise as every body knew where it was but only "rich" people would drink there. It has the statue of the poet, who looks like he is waiting for someone outside it.

Here's a photo I found of it.

I think we have all met Jekyll and Hyde personalities on drink from every country, people who get incredibly obnoxious on booze.

I have woken up with regrets and a killer hangover.

Genealogy / Average height of Polish women [107]

The tallest people in the world come from siberia and holland.

I don't know about Siberia but the Dutch women are scarily tall.
(They'd eat you, without salt)

taller people are more atractive

I disagree, I much prefer shorter women.

I think it might be like a protective thing, cute short women and whiskey have ruined my life :)
(not true but I thought it sounded good)

NO culture!

I know yoghurt with more culture, YYYyyyyyyeeeeppppyyyy!

agree but there are no palm trees in Poland like you can have in FL ;)

Maybe that is why Poles go to Ireland, there are palm trees there?. :)

I see that this thread is not really about the topic.
Why would anyone go to America?
America is a great country and it is not such a great place to go since Bush has dragged it down.
People do not need a reason to travel last time I looked but to live somewhere you need opportunity.
America has lost it's "land of opertunity, home of the free and brave" thing with Bush. I hope Obama can restore the world's faith in America.

Travel / Polish roads as recorded by myself earlier today [74]

The crappy thing you uploaded to youtube wasn't worth the bandwidth I wasted watching it! :D

This film is above your intellectual boundary. Arrrrgh!

And about 14 hours in 5 minutes isn't bad, plus I kept spilling my whiskey (I'll have to go to confession myself for that)

The song is the best thing about it, it is a bit boring, just driving through Poland.
And I shook the camera too much.
There were loads of car crashes, there was a fair blizzard, which you can see in some scenes. None of the night time shots came out at all, I am still trying to figure that out.

I have done this drive 10 maybe 20 times (difficult to say) but this was the worst 14 and a half hours from Krakow to Vilnius through a blizzard.

Life / IS IT MY NAME DAY IN POLAND TODAY....? [73]

I thought you were going away for a while

I am away, well yeah I am here of course but away from where I was. hhhmmm, Infact I am always here no matter where here is, I am never ever there.

Bet you wish I was really away from any digital device now.
I will be back soon, if I am not already? which begs the question, did I ever leave? or is it even possible? few have tried but many have failed, you do the math.

time to confess, eh?

Confession is nine tenth's the law...

Travel / Kraków Restaurants [19]

I normally put off festivities untill the weekend, myself.

I might just hit a Bar Mleczny with 50pln and have a feast!

Sure, I have gone to milk bars lots of times.
A lot of restuarants in Krakow are over priced for the tourist.
The only thing is, it seems you wish to celebrate your birthday, so perhaps a milk bar is not the best place.
The vegatarian restuarant VEGA is not expensive.

Have you not met a nice Polish girl yet? (get a girl who loves cooking and is good at it)

Life / Bisons of Poland - your thoughts? [90]

Good story WR :)

so its quite easy to stray onto the wrong side of the border if you are not keeping an eye on your map...

Bison don't have maps, at all.
I remember a few years ago they changed the law between South Africa and Botswana, the elephants, hippos etc were being shot with tranquillizers dart and dragged back to the country from which they were leaving.

They came to an agreement that these animals can roam "freely".
I wonder if it still exists?
I know this is common practise in many countries, unfortunately.

Life / Bisons of Poland - your thoughts? [90]

got some great pics....

Tell us the story and show us the pictures, please :)

They are simultaneously beautiful and ugly, powerful and fragile.

Yeah, I know the Żubr beer adverts romanticise.
They just remind me of a mix between buffalo and mammoths.
And the primeval forest, great stuff.

Actually, Does any one know when and where i can see wild live Bison? And what's the best time to go?

They're a beautiful beast.

Great adds with Żubr :)

why should animals be any different?

What about the Polish name, Żubr.

Life / Bisons of Poland - your thoughts? [90]

Yeah, Polish bison are the very last remaining in the primeval forests in Europe.

I would like to see them, aren't they mainly around Bialastok? And the North East of the country?

They are beautiful looking creature.

Real Estate / Rules for buying property in Poland as a foreigner. Recreation houses? [8]

One thing I would point out about Krakow is that a small flat in the centre is the same price as a house just out side of the centre.

It is worth looking at where the new motorways are being built and buy a house with a garden near it.
Of course traffic will be a problem until the motorways are complete but it is worth looking at, still some good deals to be had.

Best of luck

Thanks for the tip and lemme know if u wanna have a pint some time ;-)

Cool, It will have to be in a few weeks though, busy busy.

And maybe other members would like to join us?

hello dxx,

Great Idea to pay your own mortgage rather than someone elses.
I don't remember if you speak Polish or not?
There is a magazine in most kiosks and shops called "Nieruchomości", there are lots of flats and houses in there for sale.

And here are a list that a helpful PF member (eleanoroconner) made: Where to look on the internet for Polish Real Estate

How has your move been?
Starting to get chilly now.
