Law / CHF loans & mortgages, customers in Poland left biting the bullet. Walking away? [20]

I can't see England joining, well it would be the politicians, not the people, who would make the change over.
Youz seem to love your over sized notes ha ha ha.

I have not used Euros in work for over 6 years.
I am so used to Litas and Zloty, everything else looks like funny money, monopoly stuff.

Euro's are not graphically pleasing, long live the Pound.

The nicest note was the Dutch Gilder, big colourful flowers on them.
Or in South Africa the more value the note has the more ferocious the animal on it.
I think it starts off with spring bok (a deer) and works it's way up through hippos and then to lions, something like that ha ha ha ha, (not exactly)

Life / Irish man wanna move to Poland [60]

Hello jedrula,

I think there are a few of us on the loose around.
Try the Irish arms bar.
There are a few Irish bars in Krakow but this is the best, in my opinion.
There is also "Nic Nowego (translation is "nothing New") which is also one of the older established (Irish owned)bars in Krakow. "Nic Nowego" is Irish owned but does not play the "Irish" card.

I have only been to each of these about 5 or 6 times. The Irish Arms has a football team. There are more irish bars the "Irish Mbassy" and a couple more but I have never been to them. My information is old and things might have changed or premises might have changed hands, I do not know but it might help your homw sick blues.

And yes it is a lot easier to learn the language once here .

Good luck

Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane [48]

I am just showing what I see.

Zakopane is very interesting and i think not enough non-Polish people know about it.
Krakow is full of tourists (because it is so beautiful)
Zakopane is different and equally beautiful but there are 99.999% Polish tourists there.
To be honest I like being the only foreigner there because then i feel like I am really travelling, seeing Poland and being part of something new.

This is kind of similar to Irish traditional dance.

Again thank you for contributing, please feel free to add as much as you wish.

What the eye doesn't see, doesn't hurt you (does it?) (doesn't it?)

Ignorance is bliss?

Part of the forum is people tracing.

When does tracing become hunting?

What I am getting at is (no offence Welshie29 this is not necessarily about this thread)

That people on here help people a lot, which is good but how do we know we are helping?.
There have been several "incidents" and probably dozens more of people asking for help, who if you knew the full details you would run a mile from.

I am not questioning people's good nature but merely questioning the legitimacy of some of the "victims" or "people who need help.

The path to hell is paved with good intentions.

Wroclaw likes finding family trees, he has a fantastic quote about it in his profile.
This is different. "Looking for the dead and putting meat on the bones. Family History".

I am not having a go at Welshie29 or Seanus, I would just like this to be a discussion.

Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane [48]

Some music from Zakopane.

I will try to get more music later.

Tatry - Landscapes of the Beauty

Zakopane is great for mountain treks I have been several time to the two lakes Czarny Staw i Morskie Oko, that puercoespin has kindly showed a photo of.

There are bears, bores and an abundance of wildlife.
There are qualified trekkers who will take you almost every where you want to go, individually or in groups.
But there are also plenty of walks that you can do by yourself.

During the winter Zakopane becomes a skier's paradise.
One of the most romantic things I have ever done was to get a horse and slay with lite fire tourches in each corner with a lady to the ski jumping tournament.

Adam Małysz, is one of the greatest ski jumpers in the world and it was really something else to see him fly through the air.

But it is not all about the out doors there are plenty of bars and restaurants to delight.

Law / CHF loans & mortgages, customers in Poland left biting the bullet. Walking away? [20]

I know for a fact that 90% of mortgages/loans handed out over the past three years were in the CHF currency.

Agreed.

the need for due dilligence and a good fortune teller if possible.

Ha ha ha,more fortune cookies.

Borrow a strong CHF in Polish Zloty currency and pay back a weak one and the profits can me substantial.

Buy low and surf in.
I do not know much about how currency is effected.
I have lost money and I have "gained" money on weak or strong currency exchanges.
I try to keep up to date and have a rough idea of where the Zloty is but usually when I am borrowing or exchanging money,it has nothing to do with the currency exchange rates.

It has to do with me needing the money or needing to exchange it.

When is England joining the Euro?ha ha ha ha ha ha

Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane [48]

Zakopane has changed quite a bit, upgraded I would say.
I have to say that the people in Zakopane are the best business minds I have come across in Poland.
They have invested a lot of money and time to get "The right look" the Zakopane look.
And it looks wonderful.

And if anyone has anything to contribute to this thread, please do so.

Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane [48]

The first two photos are of the mountain peaks collectivley known as "the Sleeping Knight", overlooking Zakopane.
The photo that looks like bread is actually different types of cow, goat, sheep sometimes smoked cheeses, very tasty treat.
The jars are packed with preserved wild mushrooms, pickles, mustards, horse radish, jam, honey etc.
I took these photos a few days ago.

Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane [48]

Thanks McCoy,

I wasn't sure if anyone reads these threads:)

I will be going to Zakopane and I will try to get more photos of the architecture on here.
It is really amazing as I am sure you will all agree.

I will try to include as many of my own photos as I can.
Here are interiors of some restaurants in Zakopane.
Note that the table and chairs can be half a trunk of a mighty tree.
There is often live music in these establishments at night.
Like Ireland except the music is completely different (great after a few beers).
The Kiosk is selling, smoked cheeses, wild mushrooms, pickled gherkins, honey, horse radish etc... all completely natural and tasty.
I will do more on the food later.

Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane [48]

If Krakow is the sophisticated intellectual city with all it's grandeur then
Zakopane is the town which is larger than life, from the people to the architecture to the mountains surrounding it.

100 Km south of Krakow on the dual carriage up in the forest and mountains is the town of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zakopane
(Myslenice is on the way)
Zakopane is not just a town,
it is a style of Architecture, Music, a place steeped in history and is almost like another country in Poland.
It is also a year round hot spot for Polish tourists because of it's beautiful heritage and the wonderful nature surrounding it.

Zakopane is on the Tatra mountain range and neighbours Slovakia.

There are many fine walks in this mountain range and ski slopes in winter.
Rysy is the highest mountain in the Polish Tatras (2499 m ).

Back to the town of Zakopane.

There is a Map of Zakopane. Krupówki is the main shopping street in the town. Packed with shops, bars and restaurants, Zakopane has a very unique traditional Polish atmosphere.

Legend has it that this "sleeping knight" will rise up and free Poland from her suppressors.

Traditional costume

Every area in Poland has it's own traditional costume and Zakopane is no exception.
Zakopane has a proud history and likes to show it off in a very natural way.

Note the shells in the gentleman's hat.
The sea is far away and shells were sought after and incorporated into the costume.

The Architecture.

I have never seen architecture like this anywhere else in the world.
The steep angle of the roof, the beautiful intricate carvings in the wood, the style is very unique.

I do not mean to be disrespectful.

The story you have given us is not exactly a tear jerker.

Why did the guy leave and not keep in contact? unless he did not want to be found?

A guy (Lukasz) you know is in Katowice, you both speak to his father yet you can not find him.
Why don't you just ask his dad?.

I'm not a serial man eater or anything.

Is that not what a serial man eater would say ;)

Law / Poland: the most attractive European country for future investors [55]

I know quite a few people who are currently investing a lot of money in Poland.
Despite what you may think Poland is still a good place to invest.
The trick is you have to know what to invest in.

Especially with 2012 just around the corner, Poland will hopefully have the 'Euro currency', the European football championships and the infrastructure to support it's development.

It already has highly skilled and educated people with a good work ethic.

Yeah, but isn't it the case that foreigners steal in and milk the profits, leaving the Poles to do all the donkey work? That's what I've heard.

I think that is a very unfair statement, I see that it is only what you heard.
Investors want to make profit, they employ Polish people, creating a competitive market and employment.
In Ireland we had/have may American multinationals because we made it very attractive for them to come to Ireland. Both the companies and Ireland have benefited hugely from this transaction.

Law / CHF loans & mortgages, customers in Poland left biting the bullet. Walking away? [20]

The message is... if you manage to get approval for a CHF loan in Poland right now, snap their arm off!! You'll be quids in.

I thought that because of the Cradit crunch, many people had bought Swiss Franks and the banks are not lending them now?.

There seems to be a general consensus that the Zloty will go back up, That the dip is due to people not knowing where Hungry is (East Europe) and therefore it effected neighbouring countries, is this why you are saying that it is a great time to borrow in Swiss Franks? Because the Zloty will rise against it?.

Life / Irish man wanna move to Poland [60]

Sean BM how on earth can you describe living in Poland as good craic?!

I enjoy living here.

I lived there for two years and whilst people can be quite nice, friendly and good natured

Agreed

they're quite stiff compared to the Irish

I know what you mean, northern Europeans are a bit more serious.

the sense of humour does not pervade everyday life as it does here.

I wouldn't agree with that.

Do you speak Polish?
Where did you live?

Sean BM how on earth can you describe living in Poland as good craic?!

Just for context, which post did I describe living in Poland as good craic?
I do not think the bureaucracy is fun but as i said, I enjoy living here very much.

Life / Polish views towards the Brits and all other "natives" [26]

I think it is difficult for some people to move to another country.

I have met people who compare everything to what they know, rather than embracing the new, the different.
I have met some terrible native English speakers who live here and look down there noses at Polish people and complain about everything, it is a superiority complex but that was a long time ago. (I hope that has changed)

I don't know any native English speakers here, not for any particular reason.

I think a lot of the problems people have living here is down to communication and learning the language, if you don't speak Polish, then you alienate yourself and get lonely.

they live in the bubble of only going to places and meeting people who are from their same country....how stupid is that?!!

I remember the first time i went to Thailand, with these pair of egits, all they wanted to do was sunbathe by the pool and eat McDonalds.

This disgusted me.

Life / Irish man wanna move to Poland [60]

im a qualified civil engineer with over 2 years experience

There should be loads of work here for you so.
Poland is going through what Ireland went through years ago and there is huge amounts of roads being built.

but the job opertunities in this area seem only to be in Warsaw.

It should be nationwide and civil engineers are in demand for the work load.
The language of course is a draw back, i do not know how that would work but you should be able to find something.

Is nice to hear an Irish person is hanging around the place and is not in Krakow just for a stag party

I enjoy living here very much.
It is very similar and very different to Ireland.
Extreme temperature differences but good craic .

so many questions to ask...

Well i find this kind of thing a bit strange.
It could be perfectly straight forward but how do we know?
This could be anyone looking for anyone for any reason, no?
Who are we to help track down some guy for a girl?

And that ladies and gentlemen is why I should not write on these type threads.

News / EU constitution: 'Strong show' for Irish No vote ? [126]

management were outraged that we found it funny and tried to stop us from reading it.

But surley you can just read it after work anyway?

They are monitoring our internet and email usage so closely now, it can take me anything up to 5 minutes just to open an email.

It sounds like a prison.

I think there is a lot of feeling out there that we need to keep on the "good side of EU" now that we are consumed by recession etc etc......

That is exactly what i was thinking and i would certainly not put it past the government.
Don't bite the hand that's fed you!.
I wonder if Ireland will get another long gobbledygook document through the doors or will they just use the first one again.

It is terrible, really terrible, how can it call itself democratic?

News / EU constitution: 'Strong show' for Irish No vote ? [126]

it's a fekkin farce

It does appear that way.
I will be back in Ireland soon enough and get all the juicy story.
But it is pathetically scandalis.

I do think that our freedom is being taken from us bit by bit, minute to minute.
