Life / Advice on speed limit in Poland! [12]

I am here to know how you can alert yourself from police car speed traps, speed cameras, and other road way hazards

If you are on a fast road, oncoming traffic will flash their lights to let you know that there is a speed trap. But only if they have seen it and feel inclined to help.

Genealogy / Searching for surname - Hawryluk [12]

Cerheneuka (<- wheres this place???)

The closest that I can find, in spelling, is in the Czech Republic.

Edit: The name Hawryluk shows up as possibly coming from Ukraine.

If you think your roots are Polish... look in the area of far east Poland and west Ukraine.

More info would help, if you have it. Particularly dates.

Travel / What are Your Best Poland Travel Tips? [64]

Does anyone hunt mushrooms successfully in mid-July?

I can't argue much with an expert, but July does seem early to me. Let's say, for some species.

Life / "I can spot a Pole a mile away" - Polish fashion? [146]

Do you really value so highly and are scared of their opinion? If yes, then why?

I value all thought out opinions, be they for or against my arguement. I am just curious to know what they would say, given the context of the posts.

Because, frankly, I don't see anything funny on that page. I do see some very offensive posts [or opinions] though.

There is a limit to what some of us will put up with.

Love / I got married to a Polish wife; Polish family advice needed [45]

I dont know what are genuine reasons from them, or just lame excuses?

They have to made aware of the problem in no uncertain terms. Once in debt it is almost impossible to get out of without help. They have to show that they are doing something themselves.

If any one of the children fail to pay at any time, it is a backwards step.

But of course you know all of this. It's time for a family meeting to thrash it out.

Anyone know anything about this and / or where I could find out the answer?

If you come by road there is no border, therefore no customs.

Love / I got married to a Polish wife; Polish family advice needed [45]

Now, the daughter who owns the property thinks that all daughters should pay 200-300zl towards the parents upkeep every month until the debts are paid off. My wife is a housewife, so i would ultimately be giving them money, which i think is wrong.

Find out what the debts are, which ones have the biggest interest etc.

Clear the small debts as quickly as possible.

Maybe, re-arrange the larger debts.

Move them into a smaller house and use the extra cash to clear the debt. They are not in much of a position to argue.

Take on the debts and then they owe you, if you can afford it. [Knowing that they can never repay you in full]

Do as your wife asks, but it will take years.

Find out how they got into debt and put a stop to any future problems.

Find out how the State can help.

Life / "I can spot a Pole a mile away" - Polish fashion? [146]

The women all wear long leather jackets, short dyed hair with high heels,

Are you living in a dream world ?

Ladies fashion at the moment is boots... some high-heeled, some not.
Not many people are wearing leather coats. Short and long Parkas are in at the moment.
Hair is shoulder length to long. Some young women dye their hair black, but not many.

UK, Ireland / Will Polish names eventually become popular in the UK? [53]

Kasia has become a name in it's own right.

Not in Poland. The registrar would never accept it.

The law only changed here a few years ago to allow foreign names. And then you have extra paperwork. The foreign name must have a Polish equivalent.

there are plenty of joes, bills and petes around, no?

Yes, but many of them have the full form on their birth cert.

I don't mind if people chop and change names. If that's what they want and it's legal...good for them.

I just think it's wise to find out more about a name before you use it.

PinkJewel,

I see a problem. Kasia is not a name it is a short form. So the British would be using foreign names without understanding them and turning them into something new.

Or is this a good thing ? maybe yes.

The same thing happened when Elton John sang about Nikita and there was a French film with a woman called Nikita.
It's a nice name, but it's a mans name.

Strange. Krystyna is what you might expect someones mother to be called.

Many young women called Kasia actually don't like their name, because it's too common.
I've even known one person change her name from Kasia because she hated it so much.

I'm sure there are those who beg to differ.

UK, Ireland / Will Polish names eventually become popular in the UK? [53]

Do you think that with the large influx of Polish people into UK society that in the next few years Polish names might be more commonly used by British parents when naming new born babies?

Polish Brits have a long way to go yet. I read the other day that Mohamed is now the most popular boys name in England.

The influence of names seems unpredictable to me. I think it's possible that British people might choose a name with a variation in spelling. But what do you do when the alphabet doesn't allow the name ? You just rely on the English version.

One or two names translate to old fashioned English names [Agnes.. for example]
And how would these names get chopped and changed in the school playground ?

Love / Polish family involvment in marriage [10]

Polish family involvment in marriage

Did it not occur to you that your views on life and marriage are a little skew whiff from the norm.
Instead of complaining and trying to change the situation... look at youself first.

I sometimes wish I could have a German type relationship with my wife's family. We see them once a year for dinner and they pop over when we need some help with childcare. Is this too much to expect?

You are not the centre of the universe and your family shouldn't be there to answer to your beck and call.

And by the way Germans, as much as anyone else, take an interest in their families and usually visit one than once a year.

As my children are multiracial (I am multiracial myself), there is a serious risk of ignorant racist insults and attacks if they live in Poland

I very much doubt it. If I want to call you names it doesn't matter which country you live in. And of course no-one ever suffered from a racial slur in London, Did they ?

Love / IS MY BOYFRIEND CHEATING? I went to Poland with him. [158]

Now that I have checked the other thread [thanks, AVJoeUK] I can see what is going on.

In simple terms: Get as far away from this relationship as possible. This guy is fcuking with your mind and will do worse to your body.

i want better, its just i dont see better, and i know this sounds really weak and pathetic, but im scared of being single again.

This is where he has control. You are losing all self respect.

Snap out of it NOW. Stop thinking about him and concentrate on yourself. Don't even bother talking about him to friends.

And make sure you get yourself into the right frame of mind for when you next see him, if only to tell him to get the fcuk out of your life, forever.

Love / IS MY BOYFRIEND CHEATING? I went to Poland with him. [158]

when he comes back, im going to break up with him, and if he can clean up his act, ditch his bad influences, move out and get his own place, work hard, then ill consider taking him back. i know if he really loves me and wants me, then he will do it. how long, say 3 months?

I think he'll say 'Fcuk you' and then just leave. He's got plenty of mates to console him and to get you out of his mind he'll probably go for a one night stand, or more.

He is not part of you. He has his own thoughts and he will act upon them.

Don't play the revenge game. It will eat you up and he won't give a toss. In fact he will probably laugh at you.

You are making all these decissions and you haven't even spoken to him face to face yet.

Love / meaning of receiving empty text [21]

i remenber reading on this forum that its a polish thing- that when an empty text is sent its a sign that the person is thinking of you.

is this correct?

No. No-one in this house has heard of it.

It could be that he was too fast with the keys and somehow lost the message.

It could be some cryptic way of saying... I have nothing to say to you. Or... I'm too busy at the moment.

Why didn't you call back for confirmation ?

hes begging me not to leave him.

If he still cares... find out the truth and nothing more. Don't try revenge or you'll lose him for good.

he told me he was leading her on as a joke,

Have you never flirted. It happens on this site every day.

i am now going to play cool and not take things seriously

Playing cool is good. Some things you need to take seriously.

Love / IS MY BOYFRIEND CHEATING? I went to Poland with him. [158]

Was he really just having fun?

I have no idea.

Why did he make a real date?

He made a date for some time in January. We will never know if it was real.

he was turning to another woman and lying about it to Blingin.

I can't argue with that.

If it was innocent why didn't he tell Blingin about it?

If it was innocent, why would he have to tell her about it ?

Love / IS MY BOYFRIEND CHEATING? I went to Poland with him. [158]

i confronted him.

You shouldn't have done. But there again you shouldn't have tried to trick him.

I'll bet that because you know him you sent him messages to test his weaknesses, not his strengths. You were probably leading him on.

You were playing a dangerous game. How do you know that he wasn't doing the same?
Do you know if he would have ever met the other girl [you]. Or was it part of his game , to pretend ? You should have waited to find out.

As I understand it... you are in the UK and he is in Poland. Yes / No ?

If he has mates and work near you then he will probably be back, but I doubt he'll be running into your outstretched arms.

If you want him back. Wait until he returns to the UK and go and speak to him. If he doesn't come back then you'll know it's over between you.

Of course it could have been over some time ago, but you just didn't realize it.
