Love / What do the Polish guys think about the British girls?? [37]

English girls want to eat out a lot and are very active compared to polish girls. They need to have plans for weekend, evening, long weekend - all set. They are more into consumerism culture where polish girls can be plain greedy.

Now that IS generalization.

Travel / What has changed (travel-wise) after Poland's joining the Schengen zone? [15]

Nothing ever happens on the border these days but you can get stopped by customs and usually it is happening when you're way into Germany. They'd look for smuggled cigarettes mostly, police would have their reasons to stop you, too. Never on the border though.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

Do children still have to wear "special shoes" when they go to school? My husband told me that when he went to school, the kids couldn't even wear their street shoes in the classroom

I had to change shoes at school, too and we had to carry it in an extra bag daily; couldn't just leave them at school for some unknown reasons. They had to be "healthy" ones for kids and kept school floors clean on positive note. Nowadays kids don't have to change shoes, at least not in all public schools.

As for taking your shoes off when at home there's one argument that is convincing to me: you're bound to bring some dog **** home no matter where you live, from time to time that is.

Formal dress is a headache. I go every second morning to get milk to local store, just few yards/meters away and now keep checking my hair, put long pants on etc - all after getting that look from all dressed up already on street and in the store itself and from the NEIGHBORS. Have to clean my windows again!

Travel / WE ARE BACK FROM POLAND AND HERE IS OUR REPORT [96]

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Does anyone suggest taking the train instead?

If you take Express train from Szczecin to Krakow your journey would take some 9 hrs and you are likely to change trains in Warszawa. I've done it several times and had enjoyed it. It seems long but you can have a meal on board and changeover in Warszawa makes your trip in fact less monotonous. There are some direct trains from Szczecin to Krakow as well though. First class is really comfy and there's a bar on board to spend some time. Price is right too, 115 or 156 pln regular ticket.

News / Polish leftist/radical culture... [38]

What do radicals want, or are they the same everywhere in the world?

Focus is on critical mass, workers rights, gay rights, Iraq and animals rights and more locally on US missile shield and Belarus human rights plus defending some always endangered squats. Radicals in Poland are divided and the groups luck often cooperation, feminist are not necessary against Bush war and bike activists don't care about anarchists problems with police. In fact bike activists can hardly be called radical although monthly events are infiltrated by radicals.

They all talk a lot in their cafes, bars but hardly can gather more then 50 on any given demonstration, which is often made by dozens only. You would normally realize they are THERE by ...stickers or by visiting internet sites where all radicals blossom. Anyway they have some inspiring printed publications like bi monthly Obywatel. I wish we had some more serious car busters type movement reclaiming street etc. Alternative music seems to be flourishing though.

Noam Chomsksky is a guru. Howard Zinn is probably focused too much on US to get wider interest here. Generally corporation bashing isn't fashionable.

5th commandment is present in all major religions. (...) it is definitely easier to be critical of one's own country rather then one's own mother, isn't it?

Life / Anti-spanking law in Poland? [76]

To spank a child is a cruel, spiteful, ignoble, mean, disrespectful and dirty act because it is carried out towards a powerless person who is not allowed to defend herself / himself nor to escape from the aggressor and his ignorance.

Why spankings, slaps, and even apparently harmless blows like pats on the hand are dangerous for a baby?

1. They teach it violence.
2. They destroy the absolute certainty of being loved that the baby needs.
3. They cause anxiety: the expectancy of the next attack.
4. They convey a lie: they pretend to be educational, but parents actually use them to vent their anger; when they strike, it's because, as children, they were struck themselves.

5. They provoke anger and a desire for revenge, which remain repressed, only to be expressed much later.
6. They program the child to accept illogical arguments (I'm hurting you for your own good) that stay stored up in their body.
7. They destroy sensitivity and compassion for others and for oneself, and hence limit the capacity to gain insight.

Travel / WE ARE BACK FROM POLAND AND HERE IS OUR REPORT [96]

We liked the people. They were helpful when we needed help. The only concern we have is how difficult it is to make them smile. I realize what the country has went through over the years so I’m sure there is resentment. We asked a young lady to join us for dinner to learn more about the people and we asked her why poles don’t smile much and she said Americans smile too much.

We don't have in our constitution "pursuit of happiness". Don't have to beam smiles.
Seriously, weather has much to do with smiles. More sun more smiles.

Life / What do Polish people usually do on Sunday? [40]

I cant realise how they can live with 2,000 zloty whn they pay 1200 zloty rent for appartment.

Not that many residents of Szczecin pay that much for rent. Most housing is either owned by residents, housing cooperative or city - all pay much less then what you can find in rental market. Besides there are 10 000 residents in Szczecin that don't pay rent for years. Eviction is only possible after at least 2 court hearings and City has to provide the evicted with other housing (projects) which are built at rather slow rate (some hundreds a year).

Welcome to Szczecin.

Travel / Need advice on train travel and using money in Poland. [8]

arsesta,
I wouldn't bother with any passes. They would only limit you to choosing some adequate trains and it could be not continent. Your longest trip Krakow Gdansk would cost you some 100 -110 pln by express or IC train (which I'd recommend on this route). Gdansk to Malbork only 12 pln (don't bother with EC to get there as it would be a short trip). Gdansk - Torun 40 pln Regular or if you take IC or Express more but time saving time won't be much. Torun - Warszawa another 40 pln REGULAR. And Warszawa Krakow some less then 100 on EC.

Overall you'd spend about 300 pln (some 130 USD) so buying any pass as I said would only limit you in terms of choices and give not much in savings.

To save big, travel on weekend on Regular trains - Friday 18 pm to Monday 6 am on TURYSTYCZNY bilet (covers all Regular trains in this time frame for only 60 pln)

News / So why is there so much animosity against Poles? [65]

You British often have this plastic, fake smile on your pale faces, your language is MONEY no matter how hard you'd try to pretend it is not. Practically every conversation in your language resembles making some contract or a deal and you'd glorify individulity but your men and women luck real character. You are rather modern males and females and seldom one can find among you men and women. You all look like you either own a shop or want one to own. You would consider your values universal without a clue that you are a product of your own culture. Others are not English enough for you and they in your opinion should be, even outside of your land. Generally in personal contacts you'd not recognize your left hand from right. No wonder you wipe your asses the same hand as you'd eat.

News / Polands World Cup. [9]

You are appealing to young people who left willing to work hard for the right price for some time. If they are back they are rather to look for different jobs then they had. Not many now working in construction in UK or elsewhere will get jobs in huge projects awaiting here in Poland, relocating within Poland is still not attractive for many. They rather want good paid jobs in towns where they have families, friends and local connections not building motorway in the middle of nowwhere or rising hotels in Krakow and pay extras for accommodation etc

( Bring on the insults )
You sound like Kennedy "don't ask what state can do for you....)

Food / Polish grochówka recipe? [23]

Well, it's not garbanzo. Groch taste very different. True that groch takes forever to cook. That's why most would use shelled (?) groch, it has no outside skin and peas are ...split in halfs. That way it would cook as long as beans do.

Still to make gorchowka you'd have to put some whatever smoked into it and it is not grochowka without majeran. Beans in grochowka are like garnish.

Above rules would be at least for Wielkopolska region, it may sure very on region.

My taste for grochowka has to be often substituted as for this groch needs to be soaked day before. It tastes best in cold days anyway.

Food / Polish grochówka recipe? [23]

I thought they use navy beans in polish bean soup. What's yellow peas? Do you mean yellow split peas?

Now I'm confused myself. I think I'm using what is called shelled peas, in polish "groch żółty łuskany". Groch is round balls, navy beans are longish. Groch has to absolutely be in GROCHowka. I'm adding navy beans, too to grochowka just not that many, it's made on groch.

Here's link to groch pic:

Food / Polish grochówka recipe? [23]

groch = yellow peas, yes. Split definitely as whole one takes forever to cook.
Something similar to this pic:

totu.pl/cena/1393235-cenos-fasola-piekny-jas-400g

use smoked kielbasa only if you can't use smoked bacon. No need to eat smoked bacon in soup, it kind of works as a spice here, giving grochowka right flavor.

Having enough smoked taste of bacon use "regular" kielbasa instead, similar to one on this pic:

Food / Polish grochówka recipe? [23]

To make it real you'd need to use marjoram and garlic and smoked bacon and don't forget to rub the cooked vegetables though a sieve as it would make right density. I am adding just some beans but mostly it is groch.

History / Is anything but Polish history taught in Polish schools? [50]

Korea war is indeed forgotten for me. Was it in 53? First cold war military conflict? Vitnam had many, many civilian victims, Napalm, small, naked child screaming running away, media reporting live from front lines, helicopters, Vetnamese in tunnels, jungle, peace movement in US, Russiun support for North, Nixon and Watergate, Nixon lied, Nixon gone, long war.

:) didn't use Wikipedia
