Language / "The Polish Language Boom" [9]

Why aren't there more English schools teaching Polish over French!

Hmm. Since the average performance of school kids in modern languages is less than brilliant the introduction of the fiendishly difficult Polish langauge may not be seen as a positive move by the publishers of schools performance tables.

"Look mam, I've got an A* in Polish"

"That's great little Jonny, Say something to me in Polish"

"Piwo"

"And waht does that mean Jonny?"

"Beer, mam"

"Very good son. Say something else."

"Er, that's all I know mam"

Travel / Wizzair cancelling flights [23]

Szarly, what do you mean?

You know me Seanus, just a passing flippant comment. Cheap flights harm the environment or so it is said.

Being serious for a minute I can understand Wizzair's dilemma. Their business model is based on lower margins and full flights. Their non direct costs (corporate infrastructure, operations staff, maintenance etc) are already low since that is the business model for the budget carriers. Therefore there is little room to offset falling passenger demand by making further economies there. So the thing that has to be trimmed is the direct flight costs. Little chance of reducing aircrew costs since they employ a lot of relatively cheap aircrew already. The airports have hit them with big increases in landing fees (fixed), fuel costs are up (although their hedging may offset that to some extent). There comes a point where falling passenger demand in the recession makes it uneconomic to take off unless their flight costs can be covered by big increases in the fares which makes them unattractive against the main carriers who can see some lost market share coming back and are prepared to take a short term hit on some routes. In short it's not Wizzair's fault in this case, it's just a fall in demand.

Seriously, there needs to be a fundamental reassessment of demand.

I fear that the future may be taking us away from budget airlines and into the hands of the extortors!

Look on the bright side - in future Krakow will only have rich drunken Brits wandering about;)

Life / Wonderful Poland.......but the attitude of Polish people [150]

and I never seen well behaved drunks

As a lifelong 'happy drunk' (as in on the rare occasions in my life that I get drunk I am very happy and friendly as opposed to permanently drunk sense) I like to think I am reasonably well behaved. A little loud sometimes but always happy. Which is strange as alcolhol is supposed to be a depressant. The booze affects different people different ways I guess.

Genealogy / DESPERATELY SEEKING POLISH TRAVELLERS ON EMPIRE WINDRUSH [4]

I thought as much. Good luck. Is it possible to post a sample of surnames on here to jog people's memories. Some may not know of any connection to the journey but might recognise the names?

Have you looked at the National Archives list of passengers on this historic voyage?

nationalarchives.gov.uk/museum/item.asp?item_id=50

I think only the first page is available on-line. Sorry if you have tried this obvious first step;)

Life / Polish men in shorts with sandals and socks.. [63]

Fashion victims are just that victims.... who deserve sympathy not ridicule. What about us golfers who are banned from playing in shorts unless we have socks on (in some cases in old fart club land they still have to be knee length socks). It's an easy mistake to wear socks with your trainers when you pop out to B & Q.

PS are my tie dye grandad shirts back in fashion yet?

Travel / Train journey Ostrava _ Wroclaw [4]

Mark

Here is the link to a PKP timetable in English. Don't think it will give you fares though. As far as I can remember there is no direct service between the two cities and it was a 5 or 6 hour journey from memory.

News / Nobility / Aristocracy in Poland ? [92]

What these two universities proclaim to be acceptable, and what they accept differ tremendously.

So you are saying that given a choice of candidates with equal ability and performance in interview for say a science degree the admissions tutors would prefer a candidate with good French. I think we must disagree in that case. In my experience they would more likely use potential for making the college rowing team as a tie breaker!

Points of Order Mr. Speaker, errm Mr. Speaker are you there?

French is not obligatory in English schools. A modern langauage is. My lads all chose Spanish cos it's easier. Ergo it is not required to enter univeristy here, unless of course you want to study French.

Obviously someone in power doesn't want you back in Seanus;)

I know that the arrangement you mentionwas no applied to my friend who married an Italian girl in Italy. Is this another case of the A8 being treated differently?

News / Poland to ban Che Guevara image [55]

are they gonna start arresting kids with a telitubbies tee shirt on.....?

They should. Dangerous liberal thinking reactionary creatures that live in a hole in the ground and carry handbags are not to be encouraged.

How come Che has not been replaced on t-shirts by a more modern iconic figure anyway?

News / The Polish Economy and its future [101]

Interesting forecast from the IMF on GDP fall for Poland in 2009 which is quite a turn around from their last published prediction. Good to see that the politicians are still sticking to a predicted growth in the economy. Which just goes to show that politicans the world over are wildly optimistic or stupid.
