Travel / Nice Place in Poland? [14]

Might be an idea...wildrovers roving...a tale of travel around Eastern Europe...Poland , Russia , Belarus , Ukraine , Latvia , Lithuania , Estonia...

I would love to hear about them.
The thing is how do you turn it into a topic for discussion, maybe that will just evolve by its self or maybe there is something similar existing?.

Perhaps it is best just to make the topic and see what happens.
That is what I do and sometimes it works and other times well....
but who cares,
it's all just a bit of fun anyway.

UK, Ireland / No Irish Need Apply - Polish Builders get their own back [42]

The text is the same as Irish Independent one, as both newspapers are published by the same company, Tom O'Reilly's Independent News & Media and probably used the same source document.

How can we clarify these accusations?.
I am not saying that an Irish person would not do such a thing and that a Polish person wouldn't stick up such a sign but I don't believe it is happening as much as they are suggesting.

Polskis work much harder than the Irish.

I have noticed how lazy Irish people have become, this is a very new phenomena, Irish people used to work very hard in tough conditions.

I thought that was one of the reason Irish and Polish got on well or at least why we respect them.

Its like Deja Vu all over again....

I think many many Irish songs could be translated into Polish.
In so many ways the Poles are the same as the Irish.

Missing you

We reap what we sow.

Very true.

I have lived in Poland on and off for 6 years and since the Poles have legally been allowed to work in Ireland I have been constantly inquiring about how the Poles are treated in Ireland.

My friends and family have been telling me that they are great.
Then I started thinking that they might just be saying that because I live here and they are polite but most of them have been here and all of them loved it, a few of them have learned a fair amount (well past "hello, goodbye, thank you") in Polish and all of them have Polish friends.

The Poles are known for thier work ethic and not complaining, saving money and sending it back home.
These are all things Irish people have done for century's.

The only negative thing I could find was that in the tabloids Poles are being blamed (more than neccasay) for car accidents, which is ridiculious because in Ireland you do NOT need a full licence to drive on the road.

I have been very well treated and received by Polish people here in Poland.
And i sincerely hope that most Polish people can say the same back in Ireland.

I see that in some ways this forum is like a tabloid, we love to see the worst and talk things down. I would love to hear the success stories but these times in Ireland are hard, so I think there will be less success stories and more people being laid off.

The only plus side is that Ireland and Poland have met and nobody can change that, I look forward to the next generation of Irish/Pole mix.

UK, Ireland / What do Polish people think of Ireland and the Irish? [50]

Hello Flynner,
And welcome to the Polish Forum.
I am from Dublin but I live in Poland, I love living here.
I know that wasn't your question but sometimes you ask for lemons but instead get lemonade. or something, I am still feelin the Christmas spirits).

Why do so many Polish people get jobs as bouncers and doormen though thats what Im wondering?

Because as you said they don't kick the head of the paying customers.

USA, Canada / FIRST POL-AM CATHOLIC (?) PRIESTESS [72]

Men can only appoint men, like the apostles were all men, they can only name similar male successors.

Well that is the bit that is not clear.
The question is why can't women become priests and the answer given is because men appoint men so the question goes unanswered, no?.
It makes no sence to me but as I said before none of it does, is this were the trick of faith comes in?, that we are just supposed to take it for granted and blindly follow with the very vaguest of understandings?.

I remember hearing about the Eve being "unclean" story, but dont recall if that was a story for kids to make religion simpler, or true basis.

That by any standards, is a terrible thing to teach a child.

I believe that most atheists are that way because they are too lazy to follow a religion, and its easier to follow no rules. Or perhaps they seak to show off something, like they are unique. SeanBM I hope you know this isnt an attack at you, I'm just speaking in general on my view of atheists.

I do not see it as an attack at all, thank you.
But I can tell you 100% that
a) It is much harder to be an Athiest in Poland (or Ireland when I was growing up) than to just blindly follow the religian of your parents because they were born in a specific place and time.

b) I do follow rules, moral rules but morals do not come from any Bible, as the example of children being told that Eve was "unclean" points out.

I personally think that it is far too easy to blindly follow the religion of your birthplace and time.
In fact the whole idea of blindly following anything is beyond me, religion asks not to be questioned, that it is God's will but that is just blowing smoke.

And Krakowianka, I am not attacking you and I promise not to give any kind of abuse on this matter, if you or anyone else wishes to continue this subject.

Some of what I say may be shocking depending on your programming but the long and the short of it is this " There is no God, no consciousness that has a divine plan and looks at you as a sinner or a saint, there is no great creator or Architect."

The reality is far more beautiful and uplifting than anything that could be attributed to a God, using reason logical scientific method is the true way we can "step out of the cave of darkness".

UK, Ireland / No Irish Need Apply - Polish Builders get their own back [42]

Good points. Can you post the link from the Belfast Telegraph, please?
I think your quires warrant more investigation.

Also why would Polish builders have a sign (presumably in Polish) on a Polish building site for Irish people? There is not that many of us here.

I am sure this type of thing has gone on, I just find it difficult to believe that so many people had their rights violated.

USA, Canada / FIRST POL-AM CATHOLIC (?) PRIESTESS [72]

For this reason the ordination of women is not possible.

That does not make a lick of sence to me, nothing about the church does but thank you for going to the trouble of finding it out.

Now when someone asks me why not?, I can look them square in the eyes and say
"I have not got the foggiest notion".
When I was a kid I was told it was because it was Eve that first bit the apply in the garden of Eden and then seduced (poor) Adam to do the same.

Thank god I am an Atheist.

pub trips are rare so it's easy to save money.

They are rare because it costs an arm and a leg for a disgusting beer.
So you will save money, I have worked there many times.
Where abouts in Norway?

How old are you Cardno85? if you don't mind me asking.

I hope you get out for a pint.

surely this is racist and illegal.

Of course and Polish people as we all know work in Ireland legally and as such are/should be protected from such thievery.

I am sorry for your troubles, do you really blame all Irish people?

It is clear where he is talking about and very shameful.

the NINA signs not only illegal

Of course it is illegal, the only thing I am having trouble with is, does this mean that Polish builders in Poland are using this sign?, it is hardly in Ireland?

Life / Home In 20 Days - My thoughts on Poland... [36]

I have had 3 really good months, sure it was a struggle for money, I sometimes had language troubles and sometimes wasn't all that happy. But all in all I am glad I came. I have learned a lot and, when I return, I will no doubt be in a position to stay a lot longer.

Hey Cardno85,
Great to hear from you but why are you leaving?.
I remember you were having a very difficult time here and I am very happy that you fell in love with the people and the place as I have.

I don't mean to sound ridiculious but it sounds like because you had a troubled landing, you met real people who helped you, if you had been "prepared" perhaps you would not have been so enriched, just a thought.

Here you gotta come out for a pint tommorw night, ah?
A few of us are getting together, I think... although not sure, all a bit rushed but all are welcome.

P.S. you can always convert ;)

News / No Way, No Apology! Poland has every right to support Georgia! [115]

may be we will acquire baltic states as well

You will not.

The moment you go for the Baltic states is the moment that a major conflict would flare up. Putin is too clever for that.

It would not be a good strategy, agreed.

Real Estate / People who bought in Katowice Oak teraces phase I and phase II [102]

Eleanoroconner and Wroclaw Boy are making this an interesting thread, they battle it out and the People who bought in Katowice Oak teraces are watching as the price goes down, class.

But Eleanoroconner is not saying that Wroclaw Boy's prices are bad, she is saying that they are not to the standard that she would do them.

I live and work here in Poland and what Wroclaw Boy is offering is exactly what are in the photos.
I don't think anyone can say that it is over priced?.
And if you want to pay more, I am sure youz can do a deal.
The important thing is to get them let out asap.

I think the contractors who caused this wont be the ones the suffer.

I sincerely hope that these crooks (and they are crooks) are forced to pay and compensate.
I think there is nothing worse than working and not being paid, especially in a foreign country, things are bad enough with the lay offs and I bet these swines are still driving their Hummers or 08' BMW's "Sorry lads, I can't afford to pay you".

This unscrupulous behaviour should not be tolerated by anyone, anywhere.

Life / Bisons of Poland - your thoughts? [90]

I still can't find a thread about wild animals in Poland.
Can it be that there is none yet?.
More than likley I am not typeing in the correct key word?.
We could of course do each animal individually but having them altogether might be more productive for people who want to know more about Poland.

And I was thinking about it, I would be willing to travel a bit around the country looking for the bats, Bison etc...
So I will start with the Bison in Niepolomice.
I don't think I would be much of a reporter but I can post photos and tell you some facts. I think a few you out there would enjoy doing something similar?.

Get some pics for us urbanites.

You bet, I have to find out if there is ranger or some person to show me where and when I can see the Bison first.

But I go to Niepolomice often so it should be no problem.

Life / Bisons of Poland - your thoughts? [90]

I have just had a great evening with friends.
And when I mentioned Bison the conversation exploded in to great stories about them roaming the forest and where they can be found.
A couple of things that have not been mentioned yet on here,
They cross breed Bison with cows.
And you can find Bison in Niepolomice just East of Krakow, past Wieliczka )salt mine).
Ill be making a trip out there one of these days.
They are fenced and therefore more restricted in Niepolomice but I have been assured it is not a zoo.

Is there a thread about Polish wild life?
I cant find one and there are some great stories about wolves and bears etc...

News / Time Capsule: What would you like to tell them about Poland and yourself? [3]

Do you think that in 1000 years or 10,000 years, historians will look back on now, the birth of the internet and be going through these posts?.

Like the people who come on here with nothing but a letter and they are trying to find family, people in the future will be searching the web for their families?

I often think they will, you know.

So let us suppose it is 1000 years from now and the human race has survived many wars and prosperity.
Of course the technology we are using now will appear to them, as crude as the abacus appears to us.

Let us further say that 15 generations from now, that someone is looking for you and this is your chance to tell/show them what your life is like now.

What would you like to tell them about Poland and yourself?
Lots of Pictures, please.

Remember the difference between archaeologists and grave robbers is just a matter of time (Joke).

2008/2009

Let us further say that 15 generations from now, that someone is looking for you and this is your chance to tell/show them what your life is like now.

Politicians still lie.
We romanticise the past.
Poland has changed quite a bit since I first came here 6/7 years ago, mostly for the good.
Nothing beats a cool beer after a long hot walk.
Sometimes clouds don't look like animals but that is ok.
I live in the mountains, almost in the forest in the south of Poland and enjoy it very much here.
I think humans are creatures of comparison and pattern finding, this leads to all sorts of problems with what we commonly refer to as 'reality'.

I find it difficult to let go of the past sometimes.
I love to learn new things, it is one of the great advantages of being alive.

=====================================

I really have no idea why I started this thread and I have even less idea why I am continuing.

trust me you'll see alligators.. and they'll see you.

I have seen loads of them in Florida, on the road.
We were driving from Orlando to Miami, so somewhere along the way in some kind of swampy area, I can't remember the name of the place.

i liked the raccoons best :)

But all this has nothing to do with bison, so ....

Real Estate / I have 20,000 EUROS .. and I want a house in Poland - best buy? [13]

A year and a half ago.
I was close to buying a house in Myslenice powiat, on a hill, south facing backing on to very old forest, with wild dear.
It had electricity, septic tank, water from a well, not central heating or gas, it needed a complete renovation but a family did live there even though it was classified as a weekend home or holiday home.

It was miles away from anything, I asked where the nearest pub was (I'm always prioritising) and I was told that the women in the area had the last pub closed down because all thier husbands were there all the time :)

It was exceptionally beautiful location but in the middle of nowhere and although it was only on 5 are and the asking price was 35,ooo Euro.

It has been sold but I do not know for how much.

And I am glad I did not buy it and move into it...

anyone know about Żubrówka?

the stuff tastes alright tho....

Żubrówka does not taste well on it's own, it must be drunk with apple juice and apple juice only, then it is a delightful drink but be warned it can get you very drunk with out you realising it.

Yep, I have heard about the grass having been urinated on by a bison, I wonder where that Legend comes from, anyone know?

Very interesting information plk123.

Thanks for that.
I will never forget in school being taught about platectonics and ice ages and how we are in between them now while moving around.
My jaw dropped, incredibly fascinating stuff this strange planet we all call home.

A bit off topic there.

Bison, yeah I plan to see them and see if I can ride them like in a rodeo.
The last thing I would ever do.

Genealogy / How to contact someone....from 1966!!!!! [6]

Hello Domino,

And welcome to the Polish Forum.

If you click on the "URL" in RJ_cdn's post, the third post above this one, you will see that "Żary" is a place and Grzegorz_ is saying that when you use the letter "K" in a Polish address, it means that the place is a small village and he thinks that "Żary" is too big to have a "k". (If I am not mistaken).

But you are talking about 1966, so perhaps it was smaller then, I do not know.
