News / Peculiar opinions about Poland [33]

this is asked in Finland, not in United States.

Yeah, I have had such silly things said to me.

When I came here 6/7 years ago, I was asked by a Londoner "Poland, isn't that beside Mongolia?"

I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that it is only now that there are Polish people moving around, very good for diplomacy.

I hate communism, the iron curtain stopped us all from getting to know one another, well that is my theory on why people do not know anything about Poland but all that is changing.

Travel / Skiing - Krynica, Poland. Lack of snow? [30]

Just to let you all know, it has been snowing for the past 4 days south of Krakow towards Zakopane and does not look like it is going to stop any time soon.

Perfect for skiing or snowboarding.

UK, Ireland / ARE BRITS MEANER AND LESS HOSPITABLE THAN POLES? [79]

I shouldn't really do this just to annoy the sheep but I do like you both.

I always find it difficult buying beer for Polish people.

They know what it means to be the host. In this respect, they are very different from us and the US.

I assume also that they should understand feelings of guilt - something that seems quite common amongst Catholics I've met.

This is another fundamental difference. The Poles don't seem to accept that guilt is part and parcel of the Catholic religion.

I don't want to appear controversial or disingenuous here, but Mass seems to, albeit in a small way, let people do wrong things, safe in the knowledge that their sins or wrongdoings will be purged and they will emerge forgiven. As a Scot, I must agree with your opinion, OsioĊ‚. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that many see guilt as synonymous with Catholicism.

Interesting times :)

Poles buy their own beer because they are guilty Catholics?

Translation = talking shite.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

you didn't quite catch what I meant. Better than catching some nasopharyngital germs I suppose.

I never catch what anyone means, I live a longer happier life with my selective hearing and I have managed to apply this to reading threads :)

Does the sheep know what?

Your ability to talk shite.

Please quote me

No, ha ha ha ha
You love being quoted ha ha ha ha.

I don't get your drift

I am still sick and you and Osiol were talking shite, so just thought i would say, nothing new but as I said I am sick, so if I must suffer so must you.

I feel guilty about not buying anything and I just hope they understand how guilty I feel.

We all have our cross to beer... I mean bear.

How could I not be aware of that?

Just checking, does the sheep know?
Way he's been going lately.
He'll end up like one of those guys with tinfoil on his head so "they" can't read his brain waves :))))
As for me? Naw

News / Time Capsule: What would you like to tell them about Poland and yourself? [3]

I will have to give it some more thought and prepare a proper answer one day.

Me too, it is big.

I am going to write this to Nemo (nobody), in a vain attempt to seem a little more structured.

Dear Nemo,

I could tell you that, Obama is the first black president of the U.S.A.
or that Polish people have been legally working around the newly expanded E.U.
And a whole load of other facts and figures that I am sure you can find in an early 20 century history book.

I wonder what it was like for my great (times14) grand father and I wonder what a day in the life was like, what music, books and technology they used, their hopes and fears.

So I will assume that is what you would like to hear about.

Today,
I am sick with the flue.
I have been sick for about 4 days but today I can mostly take off work.
I do not often get sick and usually I only get ill for about a day.
But because I have had to do things like, yesterday I had to climb up a ladder against a tree, in a river, in the snow to cut branches that had pulled down my electricity cable it doesn't help.

So this morning I woke up to the alarm clock on my mobile phone, got up brushed my teeth, called people about work issues.
The electrician came and fixed the cable for free.
More work related telephone calls, it appears that due to the recent rise in temperature everybody in Poland is ill, I hope that they have finally decided to stay in bed too :)

I am just after realising something Nemo,
You must be a historian because if by any chance, slim as it is, this does reach you in 1000 years, that the language I am using is a very archaic and probably nothing like what you use.

I dislike most music produced these last few years, perhaps I am just getting old but I can't remember ever liking music of my generation, I personally prefer music from about 1920 to late 1970, to us there is a big difference.

I like to read scientific books, I think it is our only and best chance of survival, to understand.
I hope people will jump to the next paradigm in evolutionary thought and start using their brains.
There are many wars and dictators, nobody can tell the difference between freedom fighters and terrorists any more, the media is just used to manipulate us and it is all so tiresome.

I would love to see more exploration of our rain forests, space and the oceans, we could learn a lot.

So I try to improve myself, I have given up smoking cigarettes, (inhaling fumes from a burning plant, very addictive).
This practise is still freely practised in this country even though everyone knows the consiquences.
I personally think people ought to be allowed to smoke if they want, their life, their choice.
I have become a vegetarian again.

I have recently heard that archaeologists have come across a Roman dump from the time of Jesus about 2009 years ago from now.
They found pages and pages of people's rubbish/garbage and have found pages that might be part of the Christian bible, it is being taken very seriously by the Vatican.

But the most interesting thing I thought was that most of the papers found are actually about pornography.
Which just made me think of this internet, most people it seems spend their time clicking porn sites.
Anyway, take care.

UK, Ireland / TRUTH AND DELUSION ABOUT POLES IN UK [65]

Ah, was this anytime around the time certain people were planting bombs in Birmingham pubs or sending bombs through the post? It might have had something to do with it.

Not my dad.

------------------------------------------------------------------

My point has actually nothing to do with Irish people in England, I hope that has not been missed.

UK, Ireland / TRUTH AND DELUSION ABOUT POLES IN UK [65]

I am referring to London in particular.

You make it sound like every Paddy was p1ssed, living in squalor and fearing for their lives from gangs of skinheads on every street corner.

This has all changed for Irish people.
I think people reading what I have written will understand what I mean, from a Polish perspective.

The story you tell is often told but rarely verified by first hands accounts.

I only know first hand accounts but it has become better and better for the Irish over time.
Now it is at the stage, where it is fashionable to be Irish.
But other groups have taken our place.

---------------------------------------------------------------

In all my life, I have never seen or even heard of such a thing. Which decade are we talking about? Perhaps which century?

1970's, when my father worked in London.

UK, Ireland / TRUTH AND DELUSION ABOUT POLES IN UK [65]

People from my country worked in England when it was incredibly difficult for Irish men (and women ) to do anything in England.
Organised 'Paddy Bashing', (this was English people violently beating up Irish people).
For many of the same reasons I continuously read on this very forum about Blacks, Pakistanis, Muslims etc...

The Irish were seen as taking all the jobs, infecting the population, stupid, easy to ridicule, someone to feel superior to, working in cramped conditions like rats, undercutting prices and blowing up pubs.

These men were tough people, they went to England with nothing in their droves and lived on the streets and on building sites for hundreds of years, always falling into the lowest class system the English have.

Many too embarrassed to return to Ireland, others became too fond of the drink and even more thinking that there was nothing for them in Ireland.

Does this ring any bells yet?.

I am trying to keep on topic here, as best I can.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that all the fear, hate, xenophobia is nothing new.

Things have moved on from there or have they, really?.

============================================

A strange thing I found is that good English people (which there are many) were, to a lesser extent, looked down upon too or just got on with it.

============================================

I am always surprised by one particular member of this forum.
Who knows her history and still groups Irish and English as similar but HATES Blacks, Pakistanis, Muslims etc...???.

I think, most Irish and Polish people see more in common with the underdogs of this world.

But how many is too many and what do you do when there are too many? Do you think that countries like the UK and German who now have too many thought that they would ever have the problems they have now? I think I'll come and visit Poland in 20 years time and let us see!

You talking about Scots too?.

Real Estate / Construction (Poland Vrs where you are from) [66]

Hopefully you'll be able to see the wooden slates tongue and groove, on the roof of this church.
Common enough here in the country side and looks wonderful, although I do not know about maintainance or how it is treated? (crude oil at a guess?)

UK, Ireland / TRUTH AND DELUSION ABOUT POLES IN UK [65]

superjay's post number #16 It's probably the greatest post I have ever read on here about the British.
I am surprised it was not remarked or commented on???.

good things about is the Republic of Ireland

I am very pleased to hear this.
Of course bad things have happened to some people.
There are some terribly thick and racist Irish edgits but on the whole I have heard very good things about Polish people in my country, they work hard and get on with there lives.

Similarly I have heard from Polish people who enjoy living in Ireland, although of course it is not enjoyable when you loose your job but this is not just for Polish people.

There is one unjustified sterio type in the tabloid (manly newspapers for uneducated people) and that is that Eastern Europeans, especially Polish can not drive and cause many accidents on our roads, now just take into account that in Ireland you do not need a full licence to drive a car on the road.

I lived in various parts of England to work and I have always felt much more at home here in Poland (my place of residence) than I ever did in England, for various reasons.

Even with the language barrier I feel more at home here.
I do love and sometimes miss Ireland but I have moved on.

Well Puzzler, I don't know what your agenda is but you have single handedly livened up this place.

Travel / Polish Guidebooks [3]

Hello ollie,

And welcome to the Polish Forum.

It really depends on the type of traveller you are to be honest.
I have met many many people on my travels who use these books as figurative travel bibles.
They get great satisfaction from them, as they give competent background history of the country and sights.
They are both easy to use.
And pack a whole load of information and a breakdown of what to do, where to do it and when.
Great for when you arrive in a town at night and have nowhere to stay, you can just find a place closest to you, provided your edition is up-to-date.

It also gives different budget accommodation and sights to see as well as handy tips on how to get around places and what to expect.

Personally I find it very boring and have used it only once and it will be the last time but I think I am in the minority on this one.

You can also check out my attempt :)
Please feel free to add to these threads if you have anything of interest.

Recommendations for Krakow, Poland

And

Recommendations for Zakopane, Poland

There are also tons of books where you can read about the history of Poland in your local library.

Best of luck, enjoy your trip and don't forget to let us know how you get on.

UK, Ireland / What do Polish people think of Ireland and the Irish? [50]

When i think about a irish girl. I think about a red haired medium seized girl with that retarded irish accent.

I've never been in Ireland, so i just used my imagination.

Ireland is a cold little iceland with neither sun nor snow. It is always raining, and 90% of the population are alcoholic and aggresive.

My imagination.

Another ill-informed comment and worse of all it is not even entertaining.
Can I appeal to all trolls, just try to be more entertaining.

Travel / Advice on accommodation / restaurants in Zakopane and Krakow wanted [13]

Hello Kiltmaker,

And welcome to the Polish Forum.

There are many good restaurants in both Zakopane and Krakow.
You could be more specific.

Krakow restaurant recommendations

Also "Ariel" is in the Jewish quarter, it's great and sometimes they have fantastic music, mainly Jewish.
Vegetarian restaurants I recommend VEGA.

As for Zakopane, there are many great restaurants on the main walking street (Krupuvki), very ethnic and very delicious.

-------------------------------------------------

Also for recommendations for Zakopane And for recommendations for Krakow.

Please feel free to add anything useful to these threads.

Best of luck

everyone throws in a fixed amount and someone manages it til its run out, then you start again.. you take it in turns to go fetch the drinks. This way, no-one can slope off without missing their round as you cant get a refund.

I would never be part of such a system.
So what do you all do for fun?,
go through each others tax returns?.

Food / Where do you go shopping for food in Poland? [26]

I don't like the markets in summer for all the wasps.

White Anglo Saxon Protestants?
I thought you lived in Poland.

Also be careful to avoid cross-contamination of meat products (ie: raw and cooked).

Ok but isn't that obvious????

I have seen people who obviously were unaware of the very real dangers of cross contamination and for the benefit of the readers who might not know, it is worth a mention.

Well, I am not sure about washing ones meat, nuts or dairy products.

Jak z Bockem
or
Botch A z jakim?
As a non-native Polish speaker the change in the sentence above is a perfect example of why Polish is a difficult language, grammatically.

I love going to the markets here,
The colours and smells of the fresh fruits and veg is great.
Also the local grannies chatting away to each other, a very enjoyable way to shop for food in Poland.
I always wanted to take photos in a farmers market but have not as yet (A sigh of relief to you all I am sure)
