Polonia / anyone been to St Petersburg? [51]

What does a decimal place or two mean anyway?

0.1% (that's the percentage of St. Petersburg's population that were counted as Polish in the 2002 census)

I ought to welcome you all to page two.
I've never been to St. Petersburg.
I never went to Leningrad either...
or Petrograd...
or Nyenskans...
or whatever that area was called before anything was built.

Someone on PF has (I'm referring now to the place before the first plank of wood was laif, even of Swedish fort which eventually... you get the idea). Anyway, if you read this thread closely, you will see that he used a rude word somewhere, which suprised me just a little.

Travel / Wot? No beer allowed on Polish PKP? [30]

play trumpets

It's worse when someone starts playing their double bass on a train. However, warning people against this practice on signs isn't easy due to the huge size of the warning signs that would be required.

Travel / Donkey visits Poland [76]

you do not need to drink a vodka or any alcohol drink

On my first visit to Poland, as mentioned in my latest post on here, I drank a total of a glass and a half of wine with a dinner, and two bottles of Okocim whilst waiting for the coach and whilst on the coach on the way home.

but when in Rome, do as the Romans do

I didn't go to Rome.

UK, Ireland / Survey on life in the UK, Sweden and Ireland [35]

Welcome to page 2 of this thread. What's it about? Who knows? You'll have to go back to page 1 to find out. If you do that, it might explain why the main point I am making here is:

Shut up and put the tea on.

Also, notice that this is about Ireland, Sweden and the UK - Europe's three most musical countries.

History / Why did Poland remove the Eagle from the Flag? [26]

There is such a thing as too much going on on a flag. It's possible that the eagle just bakes it look a bit too busy. I don't really know. I just know that in a fight, the Welsh dragon would whip some Polish eagle backside, which could in turn knock the socks of any of those boring flags of only two or three colours (if they had socks... I don't believe any national flags bear the emblem of a pair of socks, folded or otherwise... Hang on - I need a closed bracket somewhere around here.)

Language / Numbers in Polish - two different ways? [44]

This was my 1st (1y / 1szy / 1wszy...) ever avatar, uploaded over a year ago. I like to change it round every so often. It's called "Osioł in Winter".

Language / Numbers in Polish - two different ways? [44]

Maybe for the same reason as why we say "half a dozen" instead of six.
There may be more reasons.
Could be as many as three quarters of a dozen reasons.

Language / whats the easiest and fastest way to learn and understand Polish?? [6]

whats the easiest and fastest way to learn and understand Polish??

Be born in Poland to Polish parents.

I would give a better answer, but the best I can come up with is the usual:

Try to meet Poles who can only really speak Polish (easier here in the UK than in Australia, I can be fairly certain).
Get a good book that goes through all the grammar.
Play with PolishForums dot com - the forum for all your Polish needs!

Love / WHITE GUYS POLISH WOMEN [36]

I've watched the Simpsons, and that has taught me that Americans are in fact yellow.

Poles can be all kinds of different colour. For example, telegraph poles tend to be a nice dark brown, but the north and south poles are the true whites.

Feedback / How do I catch the attention of a moderator [13]

I think a report will show up as quickly as a PM, only a report should (if I'm right) go to all three of the PF ruling elite.

Yes, I said three.
That's 3.

This is a very busy site with only two moderators and an Admin.

News / Tornado hits Poland [39]

At least it's just the meteorological phenomenon rather than the PF member.
It's up to you to decide which would be worse.

Sorry, Windyboy1066, it just had to be said.

Life / "K*rwa"-why do young Poles find this word so cool ? [67]

And what the hell is that supposed to mean ?

Do you have any ideas how to stop young people saying k***a?
I'd start by doing something about older people saying k***a.

You could start with a TV advertisement campaign,
posters, leaflets...
maybe start an anti-swearing campaign organisation.
My Polish isn't good enough to think of a name for it though.

Language / Friend, mate, workmate, pal, true love, passing acquaintance... [24]

dziewczyna

Another question:
When does a dziewczyna stop being a dziewczyna?
One answer could be: when the relationship falls apart.

Could her 81st birthday be another turning point?

I was trying to explain to a współpracownik about who I had been working with on another site recently. Other than the boss who he already knew about, a man in his late thirties, I also mentioned a 90 year old girl.

I know how nineteen and ninety are two easily misheard English words, but how do I manage to get my -naście and my -dziesiąt mixed up quite so easily?

Life / "K*rwa"-why do young Poles find this word so cool ? [67]

I've heard the K-word from plenty of older people.
Even today, I heard a 60 year old say it.

K*rwa

I would have preferred to see a few more asterisks there. Something like:

k***a
k****

or even

**r**

Feedback / Mods: why is my request removed each time? [36]

I have noticed a member of PF who has been here since 2006, I believe. I won't give his name, but nearly everything he posts is a translation request. They always get moved to random chat.

If he can get through it, he must show you what determination can do for you.

Language / Friend, mate, workmate, pal, true love, passing acquaintance... [24]

Is this the kind of thing you were looking for?

Yes. Thanks.
But I'm still greedy for more words.

koleżanka - girl friend

przyjaciółka - female friend

dziewczyna - girlfriend

Which ones are the ones a girl (a straight one) would call a girlfriend, which is what a bloke would call a girl who is a friend, and which one is a girlfriend as in girlfriend-and-boyfriend?

LENIWY

One of my workmates gets referred to sometimes as Leniwiec (sloth, two-toed or three-toed variety).

News / SHOULD POLAND/EUROPE BE WORRIED ABOUT RUSSIA?? [90]

It has probably already been stated by others on this thread that Russia DOES need Europe's business. Europe invests heavily all over the world, including in Russia, including in the US. Add together all the countries of Europe and you are talking about huge amounts of trade.

Mathematics has never made me laugh...

What about typing numbers into your calculator, then turning it upset down to make rude words?
I suppose I should have started a new thread for this.

News / What if Russia decide to liberate Scottland from England? Polish position [152]

good night

Night night, Crowman. Chat soon!

Perhaps we can talk then about Russia's treatment of it's various different native ethnic groups and those outside of Russia that it has dealt with and continues to deal with, from the Ukrainians who are sort of Russian but sort of not, to the Hantis who had villages bombed by Russian planes because of issues relating to the Russian authorities treatment of school children, to the groups in the Caucasus who were relocated en masse Central Asia during times of "trouble", to the Nenets and others who are still facing severe environmental problems, acquisition of their land for use by the oil and gas industries, to the Poles, Slovaks, Czechs, Hungarians blah blah blah...

Or perhaps we could have a cup of tea and talk about how nice the weather is and where we've all been for our holidays this year.
