UK, Ireland / Do Poles integrate well into British society? [18]

I would like to think that in my part of the country they do, officially through local government funded "welcome packs" and socially by inviting them to join in things like weddings, nights out etc. ( During the last world cup the local corner shop went Polish - decked out in Polish flags and red and white everywhere - might just have been to sell more beer tho ! )

Culturally I find a lot of common ground with Polish people.
Why do they come ? Examples such as the one in the link here are commonplace.

25 year old Polish worker gets £80, 000 backing to start bisiness. A POLISH baker persuaded his boss to back him in a new wholesale bread business while he was working in an Edinburgh kitchen.

And if you fancy a drink............

Polish beers bring drinkers pouring in

News / Air-show accident in Poland [81]

So, somewhere on the England-Scotish border-what is the difference to us at the end of the day?

no difference at the end of the day, but it was on the Mull of Kintyre, quite a bit away from the border.

News / An enquiry into emigration from Poland [7]

Speaking to Polish friends the general concensus is that the basics cost about the same ( I think they are a bit cheaper in PL but not much) but the wages here are much better.

News / English vs. Polish hostility [323]

There has been quite afew incidents of rascism up there.

Unfortunately there have been, but lets keep it in perspective.

Not only against Poles but against the English also

In my experience, there is much more animosity towards the English than Polish people.

The world cup was a good example.

Good example of what? The Scots keep getting "best behaved supporters" awards and Fair Play awards ( only awards re football we get nowadays ) whilst the English fans.....

Most Poles get F-cked about more up there in Scotland than they do in England!

What gives you that impression?

Language / Polglish - mixture of Polish and English [34]

Myslem of starting a thread which is a mixture of Polish and English - Polglish.
This would give a szansa for learners of Pl to practice without having to be perfect all the time.

What do the other forum members think ?

Is there enough Polglish going on here already ?

Dont get me started

Changing the subject slightly - many Polish people I have spoken to have a different view of Lech Walensa from that of most people outside Pl.

The general feeling is that , yeah, he did a good job but he hanged around too long.

UK, Ireland / English people attitude towards Poles? [761]

Night all :)

Night LiR.
Here is a link for breakfast tomorrow.

Humour linked with cleverness, politeness and the 'stiff upper lip', and a sense of British pride and 'bulldog spirit' are among the key British characteristics identified in the Exploring 'Britishness' research undertaken by MORI for the RSA.

are far too many
variables entering the equation to be able to produce a meaningful average in this case. What would you put down as 'common properties then' for example ?

Interesting question.
When one thinks of stereotypes are we drawing on the "common properties" or the uncommon, or the "just different from me" properties ?
