UK, Ireland / BEWARE when coming over UK [363]

Actually, something i've always wanted to know and perhaps i may finally find out... what did their nickname mean, if anything? "Rafałki"

It just proves that I'm paranoid after all. :) But, just like Cobain sang "Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean that they aren't after you!". :)

Soz Huegel.

As for Rafałki, it’s just a plural from the diminutive "Rafałek". I will check it and get back to you on this.

If your saying polish pilots won the BOB you need mental attention.

I hope that you didn't get this impression from my post, but if you did I guess I need to explain myself. No, it's not that Poles won BOB and British pilots were drinking tea and doing nothing. British pilots were doing quite well, but the problem was that they was a large shortage of them. Britain could replace destroyed planes but not killed or captured pilots. This whole thing led to a situation where RAF was sending rookies against well experienced German pilotes, which mostly meant certain death for them. That's were the Poles, Czech's, Canadians, etc came into the game. They were the right people at the right time, with poles being one of the best RAF's pilots.

News / BRAIN DRAIN ON POLAND [101]

And You have read it in Daily Mail probably. I have about 10 friends warking abroad as I know except one who is married everybody want to return in (few) (months),year(s). But this 'drach nach west' really piss me off. Poles should building their country not England, Irland etc.

In "Wprost". It's nice that your friends want to return to Poland. I have a friend that returned here after 10 years living abroad. But then again I also have some friends that went to the UK only to stay there for few months, and look at them, it's been two years and they are still there.

Generally it's hard to predict how many polish immigrants will eventually return, but I wouldn't count on them to come back and "save" us from our miserable faith. :) We heard it all before, from those that were forced to stay abroad after the WWII. At the beginning they thought that the commie regime won't last long, but after they realized that it's not a temporarily phenomenon, they decided to gather the knowledge and return one day to liberate their countrymen and improve their motherland. So they stayed abroad, gathered the knowledge that in the future was supposed to help them improve Poland in the future, they gathered, and gathered it.. in the mean time they married some British women, had children with them, built their own houses, set up some businesses, worked in their gardens, etc, it was hard at the beginning as they were the outsiders, and they were forced to start everything from scratch, but they manage quite well…All this time they kept gathering the knowledge, just to found out one day from the BBC news that their people back home decided not to wait for their help and overthrew the commie system by themselves. History likes to repeat itself.:)

But you are right, the whole "Drang nach westen" is a very sad thing. :(

Love / Women are divided into the same table [23]

No, too many people compromise thinking they cannot find someone who fits his or her standards.

And too many people eventually end up being alone because they have to high standards and deceive themselves that someday they will find their perfect partner. :)

UK, Ireland / We welcome Polish people to Britain! [224]

Im not convinced that you are Polish you do irony and sarcasm in a perfect English manner

Irony and sarcasm is also present in polish humor. Probably that's why I liked English humor from the very first moment I run into it. It's brilliant. :)

oh man, why do I have to get in trouble for trying to help? you can tell me it's silly, okay, fine..

really, no need to flip over it.

I wasn't trying to attack you Arien. It’s very noble of you that you want to help. I just don't like the manser guy.

UK, Ireland / catholic new blood in UK [46]

Ok, but is it a slang word, used in a less than flattering manner..........plus depends who uses it?

Maybe not Polak, but Pollock, which certainly comes from the word Polak. And you are right, depends on who uses it, and in what way it is being used.

UK, Ireland / We welcome Polish people to Britain! [224]

so you say. I noticed a few slang words and a way of talking you'll only find in certain areas. and like I said, I don't know the whole story, but do know people might have more reasons than meets the eye sometimes.

If he really had some problems with nasty Poles before, I presume, after reading his posts, that he would have mentioned it abut zillion times already.

let's just say I'm no fan of not caring

It's nice to care, but when somebody is playing the "look at me, I'm so miserable, please comfort me and give me a big hug mommy" card it really gets on my nerves. Especially if the person talks crap about other people in order to get this attention.

you can seem the biggest prick in the world at first glance

Thank you, I do try my best. :)

News / BRAIN DRAIN ON POLAND [101]

Hopefully things will change... We shall see. I would rather have the Polish stay in Poland and have great jobs.

I just have read that about 20 % of polish immigrants in the UK declared that they will come back one day to their homeland. 14% say that they certainly won't return, and the rest is still not sure what they will eventually do. What would be the end result of this "Drang nach westen" nobody can foresee, but one thing is certain, nature hates empty spaces, and if poles won't come back they will be filled with immigrants from other countries, most likely Ukrainians, Belorussians, Turks(!),etc and when they do that... I will find myself a Ukrainian/Belorussian/Turkish/etc message board and slagg off those bloody carpet peddlers for undercutting our wages and tell them to go fu****back to their smelly **** hole homes! Revenge at last!! Buahahahahha.....:)

UK, Ireland / We welcome Polish people to Britain! [224]

I have a reason for saying this. maybe you should really come and live where I live for a while. you'll get yourself stabbed in no time if you trust everyone around you. friendly polish? yeah sure they're like you and me all the same.. but in the not so fortunate neighbourhoods you'll find yourself the little less friendly polish.

Very diplomatically said Arien :), but manser isn't slaging off Polish people because he lives in a less fortunate area, but rather because he was dumped by a polish girl named Aldona. Instead of taking this rejection like a man he pity’s himself. The reason why he says all those nasty things about Poles and Poland is because, just like rafik wrote somewhere on this forum, he’s an attention seeker. He looks for sympathy, and after he gets it he says that he was wrong, but when people stop paying attention to him he starts the slaging all over again. Just like a little baby, that shouts in order to be noticed by his mother. He said many times that Aldona was very immature, but how else would you describe his behavior. I think I know what attracted these two to each other in the first place. Pathetic.

Manser, are you happen to be, by any chance, an only child? :) Just being curious.

News / English vs. Polish hostility [323]

When it comes to race Brits are probably the most tolerant people in the world. But enough is enough. Will some of you Poles please go home!!!

The Polish immigrant problem seems to be a hit on this board. :) Personally I'm really tired of engaging in this discussion, but you are free to browse the forum and I’m sure you will find some interesting opinions on this subject. As for your plea, I'm sorry but there’s not much I or other polish users of this forum can do about it. Still appreciate the mild tone of your comment. :)

if 600,000 people landed in poland, quests of another country. I wonder what the reaction of the polish people would be

The same as any other nationality perhaps? :)

Do you think that Australians would behave different? :)

Now I fell like watching "Romper Stomper". :) "Pulling on the boots and tightening up the laces; Shaving their heads and their faces; There you have a skinhead, looking for a fight; Skinhead, skinhead, running through the night... :)

Ah well, welcome to the global economy. It’s going to be bumpy ride!

I will take your word for it. :)

Life / Kissing below the Mistletoe [17]

Maybe it's a mixture of both? :)

Certainly I’ve never found any suggestion of it playing any part in Slavic folk law historically. Both the Norse [Scandinavians] and the Celts judged it a sacred plant associated with fertility, although the custom of kissing under mistletoe seems to trace back to Norse pre-Christian belief.

Finally I know where did this custom came from. Thanks SW.

UK, Ireland / Heavy drinking culture in the UK - is it still the same in Poland? [69]

It is strange but in my imagination Poland is always the way that it was when I left.

if I was to come back one day it can be more similar to west europe than to "old Poland"....

We will see. I hope that it won't change too drastically. Just the improvement of wages would be fine, thank you. :)

Poland is heavy drinking culture two...so why can we speak about UK when we can judge Poland?...why do you all pick on UK??

Because, as you said, Poland is on the second place, ha…:P

I noticed this about the polish people in Italy. Even if they get paid really well( compared to poland where I read that they are people that get max 200 euro) they say some very mean thing about my country.

You have to also take into account, that cost of living in Italy are bigger than in Poland. But yes, if they are behaving rude, than they are "trolls". :)

You said that you have enough with anti-polish comments? What would you prefer? An idotic agreement with everything that polish people do?

That would be a good start. :)

and I know that there are stylish Polish people, but not many of them here in the UK.

Could it be that you tend not to notice them because, in contrary to these that lack at style, the sharp looking ones don't stand out from the crowd? :)

PS: His English was crap, he dressed awfully, and you still decided to give him a chance? Maybe it’s really true that Polish men are special. :) :)

Life / How many people really know English in Poland? [53]

leave it out, hadly anyone knows the langauge out there even the young. out of a town i found 2 that spoke english fluently, and the others a few words..................maybe on the increase but your decades off before their ever be fluent in most population of the country.

After reading some of your posts, it looks like not only people that live in the rural areas of Poland struggle with the English language, but you had a one valid point there, regarding the fluency of English among my fellow Poles. In deed, the fluent ones will be mostl likely only the student's of English philology (with some exceptions of course). The rest of the people in their 20ties will have the language on the basic or medium level, so danny dan, you may have some problems discussing with them William Shakespeare’s poetry or quantum physics, but certainly you won’t have any asking them the way to the nearest pub. Enjoy! :)

UK, Ireland / Heavy drinking culture in the UK - is it still the same in Poland? [69]

is it the same changing in Poland now ?

I have read some articles about today’s Polish youth, and it looks that girls in the age between 16-18 drink similar amounts of alcohol as boys do these days. Papers generally have the tendency to exaggerate, but maybe we really are witnessing heavy changes being made in the polish society? Who knows...

UK, Ireland / BEWARE when coming over UK [363]

It's called alternative history. "What if..."stuff, and it's actually very interesting. I wrote it as a reply to Heugels post. In my opinion even though Germanys navy didn't stand a chance with RN, the danger of Nazi invasion in to the GB, because of the power of the Luftwaffe, was still very real and serious, and that RAF’s contribution didn’t limit only to pumping up the morals of British public. After reading Huegels post I had an impression that the role of RAF, and what’s more, also the Polish pilots that served in it’s squadrons during the WWII (yeah I know, I’m paranoid :) ) was being diminished, so I just gave my 2 p in the conversation. It’s very late though, so maybe I over reacted a little bit. Just an interesting friendly chat, that’s all. :)

UK, Ireland / BEWARE when coming over UK [363]

The problem is Magic, Hitler needed to get boots on the ground, and that meant Seelöwe had to work and for that he needed not only Aerial supremacy but Naval supremacy too, which he never had.

Of course when you compare Kriegsmarine to Royal Navy, the first one turns out to look rather sad. Just let us take the sheer number of destroyers that were ready to engage in battle in the 1940, with England having about 40 of them out of 70 stationated near the Isles and Germany a stunning number of 10. OK, maybe 11. :) Talk about huge disproportion, innit? This situation looked rather similarly with other naval units, but that is just why Hitler decided to set everything on one bloody strong card, Luftwaffe!

At first, Hitler didn’t plan any invasion on the British Isles. He always used to say that on the decay of the British Empire everyone will gain except Germany. Hitler was bluffing and by threatening The Britain he wanted to force them to sign a pact on his conditions of course. An agreement between those two countries, where the GB would still rule the seas and III Reich would rule the land. His admiration of British nation stopped however in the moment when Britain overruled all of his proposals for that treat. Hitler really didn’t like it when something was not going according to his schedule, so he totally changed his plans. He knew that the key to conquer Britain was by the air force. If he would manage to eliminate or even strongly damage RAF Royal navy wouldn’t be as much of a problem for him and the possibility of an German invasion would be very serious. We could see it perfectly in the pacific war what a ship is worth without the backup of plains, vide the history of Bismarck, Tarent, Pearl Harbour, Yamato or Prince of Wales with Repuls. Besides, at that time most of the British battleships weren’t equipped with proper antiaircraft artillery and the armor of the deck was usually to thin( vide Hood being sank by Bismarck after only one salvo!).

In conclusion, by having powerful air force the Nazis didn’t need to have likewise powerful naval force to carry out a successful assault, and after taking under consideration that Germans were able to beach land about 300 000 soldiers and 8 500 vehicles, the situation of GB would look very grim. Personally I don’t think that it would be a light campaign for the Wermaht. History showed us that Britons can really fight, and taking under consideration that they would have a bloody good motivation to do so I am far from predicting their defeat, but the damage that they would inflict would be definitely big. Fortunately, RAF didn’t fail the expectations of it’s high command as well as the British citizens, and this long paragraph is just a fiction. :)
