Genealogy / Research in SE Poland [56]

My grandfather Dominic worked for Standard Oil as a chemist. I think it is Mobile now. He had double pneumonia three times in his life, and his last time did him in. From what I was told, my grandfather almost died as infant. Our great-grandmother chased the doctor from the house with a broom and wrapped my grandfather in goose oil. He became well soon after that. When he was in his 20's, he caught it again and lived. His last time, though... he took a shower at work, but the guy before him forgot to close the door. It was the middle of winter, and the whole shower was freezing. My grandfather caught a chill and drove to our great-grandmother's home in Joliet. She couldn't do anything for him, so he went to St. Joseph Hospital in town. His condition developed into cystic fibrosis. He died six years later. He also lost a finger while sawing. That's the one you mentioned. My father mentioned a chihuahua at the house named Zigger. Do you remember him?

I'm not sure if he was Polish or not. I just discovered his name yesterday. Perhaps it was a mistake on the part of my great-grandmother or the immigration officer.

I found the papers for her sister Marya, who came over first in 1905. She made three trips between Poland and the U.S. She stayed with her brother-in-law Jakob ?ielgos in Joliet when she came over. The first letter is illegible. A Johann Pilip, also from Lubno, is listed on the ship. He went to Glassport, Pennsylvania. He stayed with his brother-in-law Tomasz Raszowski. Isn't Johann a German name?

USA, Canada / Obtaining Church Records in U.S. [19]

Hi,

No, I don't have an actual date of marriage. That's why I wanted to obtain a record from one of the churches. Their oldest son Joseph was born on Feb 7, 1914, so it could've been later than 1909.

I didn't realize I blocked emails from here. I fixed it. The story I heard about Wasyl and Helen was that they met in Chicago. Both of them were born in Lubno, Dynow, Poland, so it's possible they knew each other in Europe. Their residence at 1316 Luther Ave was a house, not an apartment. Maybe they lived in an apartment prior to the house. My father said it was like a haunted house. It was torn down and made into a park. Thanks once again. :)

St. Cyril and Methodius church is the closest to Luther Ave. Holy Cross church, where Helen's sister married, is pretty close, too. I didn't realize that so many Catholic churches exist in Joliet. It's going to be harder than I thought, lol.

USA, Canada / Obtaining Church Records in U.S. [19]

I would like to start with the Catholic and Orthodox churches in Joliet, IL. The problem is, I don't know which they attended. My great-grandfather Wasyl Kocielko attended the Orthodox church, while his wife Helen Pilip went to the Catholic church. Wasyl is buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery (Orthodox) in Joliet, and Helen is buried at Elmhurst. My grandfather Dominic is buried next to his mother, and, I believe, his brothers are in the cemetery, too. I have no burial information for his sister Anna Lewicki, who lived in Hamtramck, MI. Wasyl and Helen's children were brought up as Catholics, but they could have been baptized and had other doings in the Orthodox church. The only Orthodox church I found in Joliet was St. Nicholas. Helen's sister was married at Holy Cross Church in Joliet, so my great-grandparents may have been married there as well. If I wrote to the churches and asked for all records for the Kocielko and Pilip families, would they send them? Do I need to specify a person/people? Wasyl's sister Tekla attended the Orthodox on Rice St. in Chicago. The only related church I found was St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church. The problem is, I don't know the first and last name of her husband. I only know the first name of their son Nestor/Nester. Could I ask simply for Kocielko records? Sorry for all these questions, and thanks for your help.

USA, Canada / Obtaining Church Records in U.S. [19]

Hi,

Does anyone know how I would go about obtaining church records (baptismal, marriage, death, burial, etc.) in the U.S.? I tried contacting certain churches via email but had no luck. Is there a certain time frame before records can be shown to the public? Would I have more luck if I wrote to the churches? Also, are records limited to ancestors, or can I get info on collateral relatives (aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, siblings, etc.)? What is the normal fee for an individual records? Ty for your time.

Thanks so much for that link! I sent a note to the admin, using a message translated by Ola.

Yes, I'm pretty sure her last name was Pilip. All papers with her maiden name say that, and the living members her brother's family use Pilip, too. I've seen it on a list of Lemko surnames.

I looked at the immigration papers of my great-grandmother Helen Pilip. I discovered she had another sister who was married to Thomas Jasbismyski. Helen lived in their residence at 165 Central Ave in Chicago when she first came over from Lubno in 1908. I tried looking up the name of Jasbismyski but found nothing.

Thank you very much, Ola, for the translation. Don't worry, I didn't expect you do put on the advertisement. :)

I think I found the church Nester's family belonged to: St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. From what I've searched, it's the only church of its kind of Rice St. I emailed one of the priests and am awaiting a response. Are American churches usually cooperative about records?

Looking at a dictionary of Latinized Lemko surnames, I noticed Buczak/Buchak. This could be the maiden name of my great-great-grandmother Eva Bucek Kocielko/Kociolko. Bucek appears to be a Czechoslovakian surname, and her family had Russian roots, not the prior. I don't know if this will aid others who're researching my family, too, or not.

I might try genpol.com, too. Could someone translate this message for me, please:

I am searching for information about the Kocielko/Kociolko and Pilip families of Lubno, Dynow, Poland (do people in Poland write towns and cities in the same way?). Wasyl Kocielko was the son of Matt Kocielko and Eva Bucek, all born in Lubno. Helen Pilip was the daughter of Wojciecha "Albert" Pilip and Katarzyny "Katherine" Urbaniak. Helen was born in Lubno.

I have a question for you, Ola, if you have time:

I was told one side of the family (either Kocielko or Pilip) had a noble background. My uncle heard my great-grandmother brag about her family's importance. I assume it was that side, then. How would I find out about this? I tried looking online but couldn't locate anything. Are there any good sources for noble families?

I have never been to Poland, but I would go some day. The last I heard, my grandfather had a living cousin in Poland. I never met or spoke to her before, though. My ancestors were Lemkos, and the Lemkos were forced out of SE Poland in Operation Wisla during the 1940's. Some came back in the 50's, but the others spread out. I don't know where to find a directory for Lubno, but there's a chance none of the relatives live there now.

I'm from the U.S. I know that Poland is a lot different than it used to be. I wasn't sure if all parts have upgraded, though.

I wasn't sure if the Dynow area had phones or computers yet for contact, but it seems they do. That's why I asked. The archives site seems to have records for Lubno, so I'll look into it further.

Thanks for the information. I guess I might have to make a trip to Poland one day and get the records at the parish. Do they allow people to do that?

I'm sorry, but I thought of this after my original post. Has anyone dealt with the parish in Lubno before? How was your experience with it? Also, how 'technologically advanced' is the Dynow area in general? Is it more old country, or do they have computers and the like? Thanks to anyone who can be of assistance.
