Language / "ksiegarnia" = "bookshop"? [14]

Thanks Eurola :)

I might have a go at setting the Polish fonts. :)

is "garnia" pronounced as it looks...maybe to rhyme with "narnia"?

Yeah but my keyboard doesn't... :)
(I can sort that bit out later)

So I take it that it's the right word?

I just wanted to check that I had the correct translation of the word "bookshop".

If so, how might it be pronounced?

Thanks

PD :)

UK, Ireland / Polls for Poles in the UK [178]

If you guys are in the British Isles (a nice safe non-political geographical term that includes the Republic of Ireland and the UK) then it's 3am. Marathon session heh :)

3 AM. Some of us slept for 4 hours after getting in from work and now can't even pretend to be tired... :)

I'm sick and tired of all this. I wish we were not coming to UK. I wish all the Poles working there dumped their sh..tty jobs and came back to Poland, instead of taking all these insults.

Don't say that :(
I'd lose a lot of friends :(

Tornado,

You see, I can't be bothered with you changing your arguments to suit the replies you receive to previous arguments. If you want Polish people to be able to vote, you won't mind how they do it.

its the fact that we are letting other countries do things within our own.

This is a bad argument. The world has evolved Tornado, you see, Polish people live in Britain and British people live in Poland but not only that, both nationalities live all over the world.

I don't won't to stop the Poles or anybody else having there say

You do. You don't want Polish people to be able to vote within the UK. You said as much.

public polling stations no

Why? It's not costing the Brit. public anything, it's not affecting the Brit. way of life.

used the polish as an example because this is a polish forum

OK, so basically you're saying you don't want Polish people to have a say in the running of their own country.

exactly so why should we allow them to do it,

Because it's a right.

does it benefit us,

no, but doesn't do us any harm either.

does it affect our country does it have anything to do with our country, no it dosen't thats the whole point.

Yes that is the point. I think now you're just maybe wanting to argue with anyone who will answer. You have no real arguments as to why Polish people shouldn't be allowed to vote in their own elections. (and BTW people from other countries who live in the UK who still have citizenship in their own countries - they vote in their elections too).

i don't want other countries political votes happening here

Why?

Polish people voting in this country about their own country does not effect the running of this country. When you start to deny people the right to vote you open huge cans of worms Tornado. It's worrying that you think people should be denied thier right to vote because of their location on the globe.

As for your opinion of the person above me, he's as entitled to his opinion as you are to yours...

You're havering Tornado. The Polish people in the UK were voting in a Polish election. So what does that have to do with scraping borders etc? It's about people being able to have a say in the political future of the country of which they have citizenship for, regardless of their personal location.

Why? What is your argument on this? There is not a financial argument so all you are doing is denying people the right to vote.

well if i wasn't in the UK for a number of years then why would it matter that much,

It should, if the UK is the country of your citizenship. Especially if you had family and friends there that would be affected by each election result. (And my initial scenario did mention a year only).

actually yes i do, because if i didn't i would have no right to complain about the state of the country

Well, there you go. So you'd not complain if your right to vote was taken away because you lived in another country (forget postal votes and embassies)? You'd just accept it would you? And say "well, that's fine cos I've chosen to live in another country for a year, I've given up the right to vote." No matter where in the world people live - if they are still considered a citizen of the country they came from, they should still be entitled to vote, however possible.

sorry to disappointed you my dear but not really politicians are the scurge of the earth :)

You don't ever vote then?

you can post it, now thats Practical

But if the postal vote is not available, why should you be denied the chance to vote?

to be honest dolly at least then i wouldn't have to make a decision about who the next bunch of crooks i'm going to vote into government are, :)

Rubbish, you'd have apoplexy if you couldn't vote.

no because i would probably go to the British Embassy :) you can vote there no need for polling stations when it comes to me my dear

Get my point. The scenario is - you're in another country and you can't vote. That's when we'd hear you.

Your job in Poland is at the other end of the country, perhaps.
Can all Polish people in the UK afford to descend on the embassy on voting day?
Practical?

Then i hear that we have polling stations in the UK for Polish people to vote for the elections in Poland. While i'm happy to make people feel welcome in our country i am far from happy that we have polling stations in the 'UK' for other nations elections. It is wrong and should not be happening.

OK, so now you are denying Polish citizens the right to vote, because they aren't resident in Poland. That is wrong. So you get the chance to work in Poland for a year and in that year a General Election is called, but you can't vote because you aren't resident in the UK, we'd hear you then, wouldn't we?

have a look thru this

Yeah there's one or two there might be worth looking at. Watch what "short term" means. They may be assuming 3 or 6 months, something like that.

I don't know if Fisz looked there but I did, not much, some advertising as Per Week and looked good but turned out that it was Per Night. Still worth looking as more get added. :)

Not sure I recommend advertising for this kind of thing...

Airlie Guest House
29 Minto Street

Yeah I think this is OK. :)

In a good location for getting into the centre of town via bus etc

Let me know how you get on with getting it booked etc. :)

Just checked the website, hopefully they might consider 2 weeks in November as "long stay" ;)

Would this be possible?

Hmm, more than likely not I'm afraid. szkotja has a point, if she could stay out of town it might be cheaper (not by a great deal though, I think) although if driving is an option it's worth looking at. Or if travelling by bus is not a problem. I'll keep checking some websites though.

UK, Ireland / The "Great British Dream" [10]

this is just a general assumption made in areas that have mainly gang related feuds or shootings .... !!!

This is true. There are a few areas in certain parts of the country that are currently having problems regarding gangs/shootings. My part has roughly half a million people and no shootings. Most deaths are results of fatal road accidents.

I've edited this cos it didn't even make sense.

When is it and what sort of money is reasonable for you or GF to pay for rent?
