I just wanted to check that I had the correct translation of the word "bookshop".

If so, how might it be pronounced?

Thanks

PD :)

Yeah but my keyboard doesn't... :)
(I can sort that bit out later)

So I take it that it's the right word?

I'd call księgarnia a bookstore... :)
btw, you can set your Winows to have polish fonts. The instructions were posted in some post in the past.

Thanks Eurola :)

I might have a go at setting the Polish fonts. :)

is "garnia" pronounced as it looks...maybe to rhyme with "narnia"?

kszengurnyu is about the nearest thing you will get to it in English spelling and yes it is a book shop in Polish.

Also for pronunciation, I have more than once seen the technique of working out Polish words a syllable at a time, starting with the end of the word, working forwards.

nia
garnia
ęgarnia
sięgarnia
księgarnia

I hope I haven't accidentally put any rude words in there.

In Russia they used to call it simply 'knigi'.

The actual word has nothing to do with books as such and I imagine historically comes from the root word ksiegowosc meaning in todays terms accounting.

Or use a Polish dictionary plug-in for Firefox. Then you can right-click and correct the the word. łatwy bardzo! :-)

Yes it does. Księgarnia comes from the root "księga". Księga = a book. It suggests a big thick book though in modern Polish (a normal size book would be książka), but it is also used in some set phrases, such as księga podatkowa = tax book, księga główna = general ledger, etc., or for books within the Bible

The older word for bookstore is książnica. The root is the same as in księgarnia with suffix -nica which represents substantive class of rooms. It quite archaic expresion, if we run our family bookstore since 1920 it would be nice to call it "Książnica..."
