USA, Canada / US Airways Jet Crashes In Hudson River [10]

I read that the pilot was an experianced glider pilot , this might have made the crucial difference to the outcome....As far as i am aware nobody has ever put a commercial airliner down on water without any casualties , the speed , the angle , everthing has to be perfect or you get lots of pieces of aircraft scattered over a wide area and lots of dead people....As well as the remarkable skill of the pilot , luck had a part in this too , if the aircraft hadn,t been high enough to give the pilot a bit of time to choose where he was going to put down , and that river hadn,t been close enough , then the outcome would probably have been very different....I hope the pilot gets a medal for this , he deserves it....

USA, Canada / US Airways Jet Crashes In Hudson River [10]

Caused by a birdstrike taking out two of the engines it seems....or so it said in the report i read...this is a bit tricky , as it only has two engines to begin with...If this report is accurate the pilot would have found himself with zero power at a time when he needed maximum power....I reckon he ought to get a medal for getting it down in one piece , hitting water in an aircraft is not unlike hitting concrete , the guy did well...!!!

USA, Canada / US Airways Jet Crashes In Hudson River [10]

Am I right in thinking this isn't the first time this has happened?

Yes there was other i know about , similar weather , went down in the potomoc river , not so many got out of that one tho , and some died from the cold after escaping the plane...You might remember the dramatic rescue of a female fight attendant by helicopter from the freezing river...i think it might have crashed due to iceing on the wings but i can,t be sure....It looks like everybody made it out ok from the latest crash , good job by the pilot....

Life / Bisons of Poland - your thoughts? [90]

HUMAN INTEREST

Poland’s bison hunkering down for winter

Created: 07.01.2009 12:11
Five hundred tonnes of hay and beets have been prepared for the winter months by employees of the Bialowieski National Park (BPN) to feed Poland’s precious bison herd maintained there.

The director of the bison care facility at BPN, Jerzy Dackiewicz, claims that the recent drastic fall in temperatures means that the stocked food will be all the more necessary. The park has been feeding the bison throughout the winter months at a special feeding grounds for several years.

“If it is a light winter, we still prepare the food, but they prefer to graze naturally out in the fields and forest on grass and young trees,” added Dackiewicz.

Park employees also intend to count the herd of endangered bison this year. If such weather – cold and frost – remains, then the herd will be fully counted in two weeks and results will be announced at the end of January. Current bison-count is approximately 450 animals.

The Bialowieska National Park is an internationally recognised protected area for this breed of bison. In the year 1929, the facilities for maintaining a herd of the endangered species were opened and the herd was started with only three bison. The park extends across the Polish border into Belarus

History / 70th Anniversary of start of WWII [50]

I have seen film of German tanks firing on Polish cavalry charging towards them , but it was more a case of the two units running into each other , rather than a futile attack by the Polish cavalry...Where the cavalry was used in an attack they did pretty well...

Life / Polish militaria stores/markets? [11]

Hi there....i am into the second war militaria , tho i haven,t had the time or money to persue it since moving to Poland...There is a huge military Zlot ( rally ) in Borno sullinovo every year and here there are many stands selling all manner of goodies...you can even buy a tank if you can afford the fuel to get it home.....The rally is usually just after our Harley rally around the first weekends in September...If you search for Borno on the web you can find details of the rally , not hard to find the place , but i can give you directions if you wish....Incidentally , the rally is on the site of an old Russian nuclear missile site...
