UK, Ireland / Polish as Irelands Third Offical language? [123]

It might just work. I know when I was a kid visiting my mum's relatives around Cork I found it difficult to understand what they were talking about. I might have more chance if they spoke Polish

Law / Today's Zloty - 1.00 GBP = 5.25471 PLN [29]

i did as i still have the receipt

Must have been an unofficial exchange or older than the last 5 years then. Just checked Yahoo Finance and the highest rate in the last 5 years was around 7.3Zl to £1.

In future Telefonitika gets to do all my currency exchanges (10% commission) LOL

UK, Ireland / Need flat for 2 weeks in Edinburgh [32]

That's going to be tough to find Fisz. Even guest houses (small hotels doing bed and breakfast) will cost a mimimum of £25 a day in the centre of Edinburgh. And forget the short term apartments - they will be more than that. Hostel seems like the best bet.

UK, Ireland / Polish as Irelands Third Offical language? [123]

Will be funny to watch tho if polish were to become the official language in Ireland

That's an Irish thing so I have no firm views. However, on last night's evidence Polish is now the official language in my local pub! The landlord John, henceforth known as Jan, has ordered in Polish beer for next week, two of the new bar staff are from Wroclaw and most of the customers were Polish. One of them even took MY seat at the bar. That stool and I go back a long way. I was stunned. If she hadn't been so goddam attractive I would have given her a stiff talking to I tell you. John, sorry Jan, was so delighted with the attendance on a Monday night he organised a past hours lock in. Great time had by all.

Work / Please help me to find one college in Gdansk/ near Gdansk [7]

A year ago I met one Polish in Berlin, there was an international conference.

I know I might be being very obvious and stupid but can't you get a list of delegates from the conference - maybe there was a web site with attendees on. I've had a quick trawl on Gdansk colleges and there is no easy list available so it would be a lot of work.

Travel / Skiing in Zakopane [11]

Follow the link below for an overview of Zakopane and it's slopes.

Locals are very friendly. Zakopane is busy when the conditions are good. There are other places on the Slovakian side that are less busy. The night life is Polish ergo it's good.

have a great time.

News / Polish Tourists wrestle and kill attacking bear! [39]

It's virtually unheard of for a brown or black bear to attack a group of more than three people which makes me think that the bear was the victim in this case.

thank God it wasn't a Polar Bear...or else there'd be no survivors

True - but with a few more years of global warming we won't have to worry about them will we?

UK, Ireland / The "Great British Dream" [10]

look at the problems they face now.. death after death,,,

Follow the link for 2001 statistics on murders in Europe in table 1.1 of the document below. No doubt the figures for subsequent years in the UK are worse but before you get too paranoid about our violent society look at the right hand column.

csdp.org/research/hosb1203.pdf

this is just a general assumption made in areas that have mainly gang related feuds or shootings ....

This is very true too

News / British moved to POLAND on BBC tonight [74]

Its probably one of the best programmes i have seen this year to give an all round good feel for Poland and show diversity :)

I agree that it was a nice program that will prompt a lot of Brits to consider Poland for a vacation. However, I found it to be a little disappointing in some ways. MP has always been best when getting beneath the tourist layer IMHO and last night he was a liitle short on that I thought. Apart from a brief discussion with the journalist in Warsaw and the last scenes on the wedding in the Tatras it was all a little bit twee and mainstream for me. Auschwiz, The Salt Mines, The Palace of Science of Culture and the Elblag Canal are all pretty well known tourist locations and he did spend too much time being shown as a Python. Maybe because it's because I know Poland better than some of the other countries he has visisted that I felt this way. Maybe I'm just in over critical mode.

That said it was one of the better programs over the weekend and I hope more people visit Poland as a result.

Here is a link to a clip from the program if anyone outside the UK wants to watch a bit of it.

Life / Date of daylight savings time change? [10]

I wonder why theres a week difference?

Yes seems weird but it's usually a week different between Europe and North America.

it seems as if every country does it at a different time?

It's only very recently that Europe (EU) has common dates. Even now the exact time varies. IN Poland it's 3am but in the UK it's 1am .

Life / Date of daylight savings time change? [10]

I think the clocks change early in the morning of the last Sunday in October in all the EU now which makes it 28th October.

Just checked it is the 28th at 3am

UK, Ireland / Inverness, UK - any polish restaurant in the area? [11]

I'd heard that there were over 3000 Polish people in Inverness so the basis of a clientel would be there provided the pricing was OK. And if you can get the locals interested.... I sense a plan coming together here.

UK, Ireland / Inverness, UK - any polish restaurant in the area? [11]

A few years ago she was one of the few Polish people in town, so if any new Polish folk needed help they would go to her.

I remember a lot of Polish folks just sitting around having a natter when I was there. The food was good. Shame but things move on.
