Life / Biedronka - retail chain in Poland [48]

have the things changed in the last year ?

It's still cheap to shop there.

There range of goods is still limited.

Some meat products are better.

You now have to pay for even small plastic carrier bags.

The queues are still atrocious as are some of the staff.

Life / Moving back to Poland after 20 unhappy years in Canada and USA [70]

Im planning to move back to Poland soon after over 20 unhappy years in Canada and US

If you need work then you should think about the bigger cities and how they are developing.

With a fresh start you will be able to pick and choose.

Lodz seems to be developing quickly, but I don't know the facts.

Wroclaw is for banking, computer specialists, retail and education.

Genealogy / Szukam rodziny Olbryś - looking for relatives [5]

I write for help me to find my cousin which was born in WROCLAW about 1945-1949.

You might have to wait for a reply because we have a holiday in Poland this weekend. Everyone seems to be out of town.

You could put an advertisement in one of the papers. In the small ads

Or leave a message on a Wroclaw website. Some of them have message boards.

She will be difficult to find, if she got married and, of course, changed her surname.

Maybe.........Wioleta or Wioletta.

Life / Paying bribes in Poland - necessity or a luxury? [41]

to intimate that you have a planning regime where some homes arae refused or are pulled down,

It might be an idea if you checked the context of my post.

Also, Wroclaw and Wroclaw boy are two different people.

Zero aesthetics

Some of my previous posts will show that I'm basically in agreement with this.

Edit: I've just read the above posts. I see what is going on.

Travel / Anyone know any English pubs in Wroclaw [47]

Almost any pub in Rynek, market square, will suit your needs. Just ask the staff at the place you are staying.

It may or may not be cold at that time of year. Check the weather forecast before you pack your bags.

Life / Halloween in Poland? [77]

Do you not celebrate it in England?

We both know that it is celebrated in England, but not in the same way as in America.

In my day it was a carved out turnip + candle and hanging out on a street corner. There was no Trick or Treat.

I was just talking about how we used to play different games, bob for apples

That happens here at the end of November, St Andrews Day.

Life / Halloween in Poland? [77]

You are confusing Religion with fun. Each has its own place. What's wrong with having fun. (0..0)

It is a bit difficult for some people to have fun in the days leading up to November 1st. It is even more difficult to have fun the night before one lays flowers at the grave of close relations.

Another point is that Halloween, as a celebration, is new to Poland. And many people just don't get it.
If some families choose to visit the cemetery the day before Nov 1st... then you can forget about Halloween.
So I would argue that you are confusing the sensitivities of a nation with a cheap commercial enterprise... based on what happens in America to, what I believe is essentially, an Irish tradition.

I wonder if Americans actually understand the true meaning of Halloween.

Language / Polish Leter Confusion [13]

Waclaw Wolynski

I have tied looking at this a few times. In my opinion it does not say Waclaw.

For me, the second last letter is 'w'. And I have doubts about some of the other letters too.

I still think it is an old fashioned short form of Województwo

News / Polish driver follows GPS directions into lake ! [30]

I don't understand the significance of the driver being Polish, or any other nationality for that matter

The story is amusing not because the driver was Polish, but because of what happened. When the story was on the Polish news, many of those involved in the rescue were having a little chuckle.

Language / Polish Leter Confusion [13]

Waclaw Wolynski

Where does it say this? Not in the first letter you showed us.

Wolyn: is a district. And the rest of the address is in that District.

I'm open to critisism though.

Both maris and myself have already mentioned this.

first letter.

W = Województwo = Voivodeship

Wolynskie = Wołyn

Life / The day of the Dead is coming [7]

Yes i know it's not a show, but a way for people to remember loved ones,

For visitors to Poland. 1st November:
The best time to visit the cemetery is at night. It can be a beautiful sight and this is when you might come across photographers taking atmospheric photos.

As you travel through the countryside and see the orange glow near the villages, it can also be very beautiful.

Genealogy / Need info on my Russianized/Ukrainianized last name. [25]

So, does anybody have anything for me?

Hold your horses. this could take a couple of days.

I did find a Lena Pashkovskiy in the States.

Are you in the States ? It helps, if we know... to be able to trace back records.

Genealogy / Need info on my Russianized/Ukrainianized last name. [25]

spelled Pashkovskiy.

This may be a dumb question. But did you spell your own name correctly ?

I can find plenty Pashkovsky, but no Pashkovskiy

It is important, if you want us to do a search.

News / Adoption from Poland for a 50% Polish? [10]

We are new to adoption,

I would check to see how Polish law concerns this. It may or may not have been updated in recent years. You want to make sure that there are no difficulties before you proceed.

Check the other threads on polishforums. There is some good info in there somewhere.

You might find an adoption agency in Poland who can act on your behalf.

Approach the Polish Embassy and ask them. They might have a list of trusted agencies.

Genealogy / Lost Great Grandmother (Mary Rucinski/Szymanski) [24]

what are the odds of there being two Mary Rucinski's who are friends, unless it was a relative

Sometimes it is possible to work out relationships because of 'naming patterns'

The first son is named after the father or father's father. First daughter is named after the mother or mother's mother etc.

Anyone with the same name and age would be a cousin. Maybe!!

Someone related to Jan/John, If Mary was married at this point.

This system of naming works in the uk. I'm not sure about Poland.

Genealogy / Lost Great Grandmother (Mary Rucinski/Szymanski) [24]

As far as I know my family isn't Jewish...

It's just a possible reason, nothing more.

The reason I asked if my posts helped is because I would like to know if other people would benefit from the same type of feedback.

Most people are not like yourself, they don't enter into conversation.

Genealogy / Lost Great Grandmother (Mary Rucinski/Szymanski) [24]

:( I am wondering if anyone can tell me some possible reasons for why he was deported.

One possible reason.

1835 -1917 there was something called 'The Pale'. This included the east of Poland.

Many of the Jewish people in this area were deported.

Did any of my other posts help ?

History / Poland war propaganda poster - can anyone explain this picture? [292]

Did a google + images

I have tried to find the poster in the original post. I can't find it.

There are however loads of other posters. It just depends what one writes in the search box.

Some of them are quite interesting.

I do remember a time when collecting such things was banned in the uk. At least the Imperial War Museum stopped selling copies of them. I've no idea what the (stated) reasons were/are.
