Study / Um studying abroad in Poland? [16]

Jagiellonian University for sure - better reputation and overall educational ratings.

Work / American in need of a job in Lublin [32]

Lublin, even though nice, is sort of provintional city of Poland. You can get a job with BFA quite easily, but don't expect high salary...

Law / Opening Kebab shop or Malaysian restaurant in Poland? [71]

I would go more exclusive and open a good Malasian restaurant. You can get all kinds of kebabs and stuff on train stations or dirty streets. But the initial investment would probably be higher than opening a kebab kiosk.

Law / Opening Kebab shop or Malaysian restaurant in Poland? [71]

I don't want to know the recipe - but a general idea what the product is made from would help determine if it is cheap/expensive or available in Poland. I assume it's made of lamb or a similar kind of meat?

UK, Ireland / Have you heard of Sheffield United Football Club? [11]

I think the original poster wants to see the opinions on the club, not the facts. I've heard about it but the "Sheffield United" name isn't associated with any spectacular events; the name sounds British for sure, but it's more or less like "Middlesbrough". Liverpool or Arsenal are more brandable.

News / The Impact of Poland joining the EU [64]

the current market state is fuelled by the greed of agents and vendors...

That's my point too. Some of them took/take the money for a building construction in advance and don't finish the project just because according to them they should have made more than what the current market could offer. So greed is a good word.

News / The Impact of Poland joining the EU [64]

more and more property owners are realising that polish estate agents are not getting the results

But how can they get results if the market is low as it's overpriced (and people realize it's nicer to live in nicer EU countries and higher salaries than in Poland).

News / The Impact of Poland joining the EU [64]

While what Miranda says may make sense, I'm interested to know the opinions of Irish people (where market prices after joining the EU have dramatically risen). Have many Irish immigrants actually returned to Ireland after that?

Also, I noticed (on this forum too) there are more and more requests like "Looking for someone to sell my property in Poland, will pay high commission." So the speculators are trying to cash in, but it's not so easy to sell a Polish property for a good price anymore.

Food / Organic Food in Poland? [14]

In my opinion such stores don't exist in Poland yet (unless in fancy stores in the cities).

Work / feedback wanted on teaching job offer [33]

Hmmm - something has just occured to me. It writes: "30 teaching hours" - as far as I remember one teaching hour (at least in primary/highschool) was 45 minutes, not 60 minutes.

IF that's the case, the deal is really sweet.

Food / sausage variations [5]

Generally "swojska" should be best but only if you buy from a good suplier. These names don't usually mean a lot now (like with vodkas - they tend to taste about the same in spite of different names).

Life / JOKES ABOUT POLISH. Have we deserve it? [68]

From my observations, jokes about Poles and Poland are less and less popular (since it appears most Poles are smarter than those who crack such jokes :); I think they will naturally die within a decade or so.

Life / What is BIALYSTOK like to live? [19]

Yes, it's not the richest city in Poland. Big unemployment and the weather is chilly throughout the year. But nice nature and close to the Eastern border.

Real Estate / Probate in Poland [8]

Probate is a legal procedure for settling the affairs of an individual who has died (the "decedent") and for transferring the decedent's property to the rightful beneficiaries.

Real Estate / Probate in Poland [8]

It could take several months up to a few years... Polish law has a lot of formal and unnecessary "procedures"...

Real Estate / Advise on payment for a person who supervises an apartment in Poland? [19]

You may not know "wage" means "weekly payment" while "salary" means "montly payment".

Either way, not sure why you refer to "most poles" when we talk about Warsaw (Mazowieckie area). On average, Poles earn more and more each year so what you might have been reading a year ago is not true today.

Here is a recent table of average earnings of Poles in the different regions of Poland - in the Mazowieckie area an average salary is 3,450 Zlotych (I believe it's before taxes; after taxes it should be about 3,000). Also note that people who work in Warsaw city probably earn about 10-25% more than those who work in the other regions of the "Mazowieckie area".

Real Estate / Advise on payment for a person who supervises an apartment in Poland? [19]

Warsaw living can be expensive and driving cost could be significant too (high gas prices); I would say if the person is doing his/her job well and you don't have to worry about the unit at all, 600-900 zl a month would be fair to spend 2-3 hours a week to do the job. 1600 a month could be a little too steep.

PS. You wrote "a couple of days a week" - if it's more than once a week, I would say around 1,000 zl a month would be fair..

Travel / tips for travel through Poland [14]

Stolen and hijacked vehicles remain a problem in Poland. Normally targeted are primarily luxury cars, 4-wheel drives and mini vans. Within the last three years, seven minivans and two sedans have been stolen from mission employees. Auto alarms, kill switches and steering wheel locking devices like the 'Club' slow down potential thieves, but determined or experienced thieves can easily defeat security devices. If you must use a private vehicle, avoid high-end luxury vehicles and minivans, park in guarded lots or garages and ensure your vehicle is locked with nothing of value in view. The most effective deterrent is to leave the vehicle at home in the garage and use taxis or public transit systems, both of which are cheap and reliable.

Study / Comparing Educational Standards in Poland vs other countries [88]

Basically good students study "daily and full-time". But in order to do that you have to have money for rent, food, books, etc. So daily studens of public universities don't pay tuition, but have to cover accomodation and living costs. Students of evening classes or part-time students have to pay quite a lot of money to get a degree.
