Yes, it's not the richest city in Poland. Big unemployment and the weather is chilly throughout the year. But nice nature and close to the Eastern border.

Anywhere in the east of Poland has high unemployement problems. There is nothing wonderful about Bialystok and from I remember, a lot of Ukrainians come over to sell things. This is some years ago of course.

Hi!

I am a Pole living in Bialystok. I have travelled a lot and all I can say is..... NOOOOT

Nowadays Bialystok changed dramatically. Not only did the unemployment almost disappear but also the roads are being built and crime rate gets lower and lower.

It was considered being (by Menshealth magazine) the best city to live in for a male in Poland.
The air is fresh, everything costs 1.5x less then in the western Poland (for example bread for 1.65 to 2PLN). One of the biggest shopping malls stands in Bialystok (google Galeria Biala). That's my opinion, but see for yourself

(just www them)

I actually live in Bialystok, what can I say... It's not so bad then few years ago. A lot of new places to go out, shops...

It's still not a west europe but it's going in this direction ;)
IMO another place to live.
Oh and it's close to lithuanian [holidays on the sea is cheaper then in poland] and close to Augustow etc with lakes and p[laces to get relax in summer ;)

Bialystok is not an old city like Krakow, Gdansk or Wroclaw. It has no old town square. The heart of the town was built in the 18th and 19th century, the horrible sprawl of communist era blocks (much worse than in many Polish cities) in the later 20th.

The people seem somewhat more sedate than Poles in other towns, less angry, and much more polite, a little more like the Scandinavians or Balts. Unfortunately there are not as many pretty girls about, as for example in Poznan or Kraków...

Best thing about Białystok is the location. Only 2hrs 15mins from Warsaw by car or train, yet a completely different atmosphere (and I don't just mean the better air quality). The countryside in the neighbourhood is among the most unspoilt in Poland, and is a real joy to spend time in (which is more than you can say for a lot of Poland, which was wrecked by the communists and two world wars). You have the huge Bialowieza and Knyszyn forests nearby, the massive areas of swampland in the Narew and Biebrza basins (great for twitchers and canoeists), and the lake district around Augustów not too far away. And then of course Lithuania, which is just 90 mins by car. (Belarus is closer still, but the visa very expensive, and not readily issued.)

However, unless you are very outgoing and find it easy to met people, or have an obsession with shopping, you might have problems finding things to do, as there isn't much happening event-wise in the city itself.

I've only been there for a couple of hours. It didn't look all that bad. A few interesting buildings... Nope! I really can't say much about the place.

Only 2hrs 15mins from Warsaw by car

Are you sure? I drove from Warsaw to Bialystock (and back) last June and the trip took ages. Roadworks along a big chuck of the road, and the stretches that r roadworks free are not only of horrible quality but u get stuck behind huge lines of Lithuanian lorries and u cant overtake them. Also, correct me if I am mistaken, but there only seem to be 2 stretches of motorway that make a whopping total of ... about 15km or so.

Last but not least, the road is littered with well hidden Police vans operating speeding radars.

Now to the bloke who asked the question, mutley, the city has nothing special, if you really have to go live there cause ur mad in love and ur bird wouldnt live anywhere else then I guess uve got no choice. Otherwise there are far better places in Poland.

As for those saying Baltic sea is close, that's irrelevant. Its like saying Palermo is cool cause its by the Mediterranean sea. The place is a dump.

I actually taught English in Bialystok a few years ago, spending about six months there total. I enjoyed living there...the people are great and so is the food. I guess it depends on what you are looking for. As far as the nightlife, there were plenty of bars to go to. It's not necessarily as pretty as Gdansk or Cracow, but there are some nice churches.
