USA, Canada / Why aren't Polish people immigrating to Canada instead of the UK? [148]

Nobody has mentioned it yet. The distance aspect. Surely this must be a factor. It's not exactly cheap to fly out to Canada from here but, depending on the season, it's pretty cheap to get to the UK.

Besides, who has ever heard of the Canadian dream? LOL

UK, Ireland / UK bus company boss jailed for hiring an incompetent Pole [71]

I think noimmi found a good case here. Firstly, from the perspective of the new clampdown on 'dubious' workers and, secondly, from a legal standpoint. It looks at causation and vicarious liability. Quite a good read I thought, without wanting to appear disingenuous to the family members.

News / Come on EU lets keep it together. [20]

Were Ukraine to accede/ratify the EU Treaty, that would be the clincher. They would be a positive player in many respects.

There was not, what is called in law, a novus actus interveniens (a new intervening act). The bus driver, in the absence of this, is still liable.

It's like the thin skull rule we have. U could say that u only hit an OAP relatively softly but this won't wash in a court of law as u still caused the wrong, e.g brain haemorrhage. The bus driver still brought about the wrong and he must be held liable. This is a principled approach though I would like to know more about how the final result came about.

It's always going to be hard. Saying that it was manslaughter and not murder doesn't change the fact that he is dead and his family will be grieving.

The bereavement process takes its toll in all manner of ways. It wasn't a racially motivated killing tho noimmi.

Life / Level of English among the Poles? [64]

U have to be much more precise in ur delivery. U have to cater for a more specialised audience who have specific intentions in mind, not just to learn any old iron.

I wanted to read up on it more but there don't appear to be many opportunities presenting themselves.

She was all shook up, LOL

I'd like to teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP). That'd present a positive challenge. I find standard teaching to be a bit limiting. Confined to a textbook with minimal discretion.
