History / Russia tells teachers to lie to students about "Katyn" [139]

Hmm...only because they are suppressed. Kasparov has been arrested, as was a member of his party, detained for 46 days. Kasparov had better watch tho, Russians have spy networks and could be following his movements. If I were him, I'd be careful. He is telling us what we all know, that Russia is a police state who can squash opposition. He will achieve no reform so I'd return to family life if I were him and be remembered as a super talent on the chess board

The Americans came in on the other side lesser, they moved from the north of France. U should watch Kompania Bracia. There's another good film about American involvement, it's on the tip of my tongue. About a certain US regiment, damn, what was the name?

The Russians were worried that Polish resistance would be overcome, putting the Nazis within 400 miles of Moscow. The Poles kept them to 600 for a long time.

Then why did Stalin invite Anders and Sikorski to Moscow for talks? No, not to discuss toothpaste as Bush did, but to seek Polish assistance. The Poles were rugged fighters who fought with pride and passion. They were a strategic asset to Stalin and he knew it.

The Nazis were a far more effective killing machine than the Red Army. Drop ur pride, Stalin reached out for help. I don't recall Hitler doing that.

Kasparov is a logician, mathematician, genius chess player and very articulate spokesman. U seem to be afraid as he is sb who can expose the true nature of the Russian state! Don't get me wrong, I'm no enemy of Russia, but I'm inclined to believe Kasparov.

In the last of these, Kasparov exposes Putin. He is a hero and rightfully so.

How can u POSSIBLY deny that Stalin killed his own officers and countrymen? If u seriously believe this, this just goes to show the true extent of ur denial.

Get a grip man. Stalin was heavily assisted to victory by the Polish AK plus the Allies. Without Polish assistance, the Red Army would have fallen to Hitler.

Work / Teaching resources for English language teachers in Poland [22]

This was never in contention. My point was that the teacher has little say in what core textbook is used. It does happen that the teacher is respected and can influence the judgment of the school as happened recently when I had to make an assessment of certain students. It's true tho, it just depends.

Travel / Walks up the Beskids mountains [44]

The threat of a bear attack would always be on my mind. They say that u should back away slowly when confronted by one. I can tell u that my instincts would tell me otherwise.

U have to understand the prevailing climate of the times tho, Celinski. Were the clearing up of Katyn to have been made a matter of top priority, then the shape of the modern world would be very different. The point is, appeasement was extended to Soviet Russia. Roosevelt and Churchill acquiesced to Russia at Teheran, largely wanting to avoid a major conflict with Stalin. The finger can be pointed at ur government then, and mine.

However, it is distasteful for the Russians to teach lies. Stalin was evasive when confronted by Anders and Sikorski. They were at a banquet, sth that should be for friends and not enemies, when Stalin ducked and dodged pressing questions.

U shouldn't be surprised Celinski, they are politicians and fanatics. Why is it over 65 years ago that we are hearing about this through Wajda and others? This is, for me, more disappointing if u accept that lying is innate to politics.

News / Polish intelligence sources have for the first time confirmed that the US [6]

I don't think much will come of it. There has been a history of corruption and concealment which goes unpunished. The relevant parties didn't even attempt to deny it.

I don't think it's overly controversial, in the sense that it would come as a shock. Rumour has it that KSM, the alleged mastermind of 9/11, was questioned here in Poland. He has been subjected to waterboarding, a known form of torture. America doesn't want to do things by the book sometimes, defending their stance on the premise that heinous criminals call for heinous measures. BBC has also circulated new stories on the topic of waterboarding and its potential extended application.

We must also remember that the CIA have licence to operate clandestinely when circumstances permit this. Such discretion to act in such a manner has a wide ambit.

News / Jews use American congress to pressure Polish government to PAY [63]

The Knesset have their take and I have mine. They'll never accept that the Holocaust was just one big mistake and we shouldn't point fingers. To do so now, so late in the day, would cause international havoc. It would give rise to spurious claims and burden courts and governments.

News / Apology to Russians for Osetia and American missile base [78]

Paying money is scant consolation. U cannot equate the loss of life monetarily in such a fashion. Payouts in the workplace for death are extensively regulated, it's a different story in times of war.

I know that, but u also made reference to tax. Let the relevant authorities weed out the spongers. Let the police and commissions crack down on illegal undercutting and cheating. The problem is being tackled and it's just unfortunate that it needs to exist at all.

Ur tax goes to many things tho. U have access to a wide range of social services in so paying. I pay a lot of tax here and I don't have any need to use libraries or public transport. Still, that doesn't preclude the possibility of me using these services. The key word is access.

Don't blame the people, blame the government.

That's one thing I don't miss, the hostile atmosphere in job centres and benefits agencies. Everything is done begrudgingly, on both sides. Organised crime syndicates are another huge problem.

I will never revert to a life where they spell it out 2 u in crystal clear terms that u r only a statistic, a tick in a box.

I actually laughed coming out of the agency at the ridiculous nature of the situation I was in. Had an LLM from one of the best universities in Europe for Law and 2 years international teaching experience in one of the world's most advanced countries, Japan. And there I was trying to haggle for a measly sum of money. Thankfully, I'm not a paltry man of earnings now. I have enough for what I need and that will always be good enough for me.

UK, Ireland / Integrating Polish people into the British society [150]

Britain is a multicultural society. There are immigrants from many places, not just Poland. Brits have always managed in the past to get round this. Also, many Poles have returned.

Life is hard, survival of the fittest.

Food / Polish romantic dinner (suggestions)? [30]

Koi carp are beautiful. I have a photo of them from Kamakura, Japan. They have sharp colours and are nice to watch. No, I'm not a stoner :)
