USA, Canada / Green Card Marriage ad leads to arrest [18]

A very good friend of mine was unwittingly involved in a Green Card Marriage. He was duped by an Italian lady. They met in Las Vegas, and after a short love affar, they were married. They traveled to Italy, met her parents, etc. Three years later, she left him.

Life / Biedronka - retail chain in Poland [48]

When I was in Poland I was across the street from a Biedronka. Until reading this thread, I actually thought the store was a Communist era relic, and not a vibrant chain, rapidly expanding throughout Poland. It prompted my to start a thread about Polish workers not smiling. The clerk demanded that I have exact change, which aggravated me to no end. The manager was easy to pick out. He was the man that WATCHED all of the employees. My wife and her daughter had a very low opinion of the store, and were a bit dissapointed that I went there on my own. However, I think they viewed it like Americans view Wal-Mart. It's too inexpensive not to shop at, but the experience cheapens you, somehow.

USA, Canada / Trying to get my Polish nanny married off -- best clubs in Chicago? [69]

maybe she doesnt have many or any friends here, ever think of that?

Well, she's not going to make any friends sitting at home. It may take a little courage to go out alone, but she doesn't have to walk in a nightclub. I met my wife when she was doing live-in work. Her English was terrible. But she wasn't afraid to get out of the house regularly, and go sit in a place where there were people. She went to the corner bar, and made friends.

Anyway, best of luck to Lucynda, and I hope your nanny can meet a nice fellow.

USA, Canada / Trying to get my Polish nanny married off -- best clubs in Chicago? [69]

Lucynda,
I believe your nanny has to get out and meet people..............on her own. What's in the neighborhood? The aforementioned church? Any corner bars, or social clubs? Is she active with your children at their school? If she is, I'm sure she's caught the eye of several of the male teachers. If she's near your daughter's age, can they hang out together? Quite frankly, you make her sound desperate, and desperate people find other desperate people.

USA, Canada / Raising children in the US [25]

That's a generalization. Most parents in the US raise their kids with normal values. Unfortunately, " normal " makes for bad television. That medium thrives on the abnormal. It seeks out the ignorant, and pulls at their emotions. Rise above it.

Life / "Toilet fee" - the only thing i dislike about Poland [17]

There are places you must pay.

The toilets I saw were very clean. I didn't mind paying at all because the bathrooms were well maintained. Of course, if you pay, and it's a s--thole, I'd be ticked off too.

Food / Looking for a salmon recipe [6]

Do a Google search for Gravadlax. Nick Nairn does some cracking slamon recipes too (can't post links here, sorry).

I found a recipe for Gravadlax by searching Scandanavian recipes, and my salmon will get eaten tomorrow. I tested it today, and I know I used too much pepper. But, it tasted similiar to what I had in Sopot. I did add some lemon juice today, just to be on the safe side.

Travel / My opinion on Gdansk and Poland after 11 days [45]

I'm intrigued to know where you have been living..and is 11 days a significant amount of time???

I've lived in East Chicago, Indiana, most of my life. It's a small, heavily industrialized city. As close as I am to Chicago, I've never spent much time there. I'm not familiar with public transportation systems, for example. The " hustle and bustle " of big city life is something I've never experienced.

Eleven days is not enough time. Hence the thread title.

Food / Looking for a salmon recipe [6]

In Sopot, I had the most delicious salmon I've ever had. It was not " cooked " with heat, but rather with lemon/lime juice, along with vinegar, and spices. It's hardly unique, but does anyone have a sure-fire recipe they'd like to share?

Travel / My opinion on Gdansk and Poland after 11 days [45]

I have been to Gdansk many times and I know what parts of the city looks life in real life. I am not talking about the Old Town but get a bus and go to Podmiejska and those streets in the outskirts. God-bloody awful! Like England would have been like in the 1500's!

Are you a fiction writer, or do you just play one on this forum?

My wife lived in Gdansk for over 40 years. Her daughter for 27. We spoke to many people, all longtime residents, and they all said it was a safe city. Of course, one must exercise common sense too. Areas with a lot of heavy drinking are dangerous throughout the world. And, if one goes looking for trouble, I'm certain there are people in Gdansk happy to abide you. You strike me as that type of fellow, which might be why you find it so dangerous.

Travel / My opinion on Gdansk and Poland after 11 days [45]

I've been in Gdansk for 11 days, and it's been very nice.
Positives of Poland and Gdansk: Please bear in mind that this is also the first time I've ever spent any signifigant time in a decent sized city. Some of the things I liked or disliked may be common to most big cities. I'm kind of a rube.

Positives:
Polish women are beautiful
The no litter on the streets; it's very clean in that aspect.
There are dozens of places to shop within walking distance of everything. I visited a new condominium development yesterday, and there were a plenty of shops within walking distance.

After learning to avoid certain shop clerks, I found the people very friendly and helpful.
The beach areas in both Gdansk and Sopot are nice. They are well laid out, and people friendly first, business friendly next.
Dluga street is pretty and charming.
I loved all of the outdoor cafes, which are everywhere.
The Polish food is very good. I had no idea french fries were this popular in Poland.
Two good restaraunts I'd recommend are:
Bar Przystan in Sopot, which was by far the best place I ate at
Gospoda Vita in Gdansk
Polish cemetaries have a stunning beauty to them, as opposed to their American counterparts.
Mushroom picking is a lot of fun.
Polish women are beautiful.

Negatives:
I'm glad I didn't rent a car. The streets are rarely marked. How does the mailman do his job?
Why aren't Poles dominating F1? They get plenty of practice on a daily basis.
Graffitti is everywhere. Some of it looked rather old, but then I'm reminded of the wisdom of Jed Clampett, from the Beverly Hillbillies:
Too poor to paint, too proud to whitewash.
The graffitti really degrades the area.
The Communist Era buildings stick out like sore thumbs. There's a lot of renovating going on, and there's no shortage of work, for several years. There's no " Old World Charm " in a lot of the run down buildings.

In some respects, Gdansk has a Wild West feel. I'm not sure why, and I'm not suggesting that it's lawless. It might be the cars. I have never seen such a strange amalgamation of cars. Everybody seems to be flying around, at breakneck speed. There seems to be a buzz here. It's probably everywhere in Poland.

One last thing. I heard it from at least two dozen people. Krakow is the most beautiful city in the world. I hope to see it next year.

USA, Canada / Please help me find new places to buy Polish food in the Chicago area [37]

159th a

159th and what

159th and wolf Road. It's no longer a Bobak's. It's a Frank's, which is a brother of the Bobak's on Archer. I'm not sure who owns the other two former Bobak's in Naperville and Burr Ridge resectively. There was a falling out in the family, and the locations were split up, and I believe two were sold to someone outside of the family. In my opinion, the food at the Orland Park location is not as good as the Midway location. I'm sure there are people who will say the opposite, or they can't tell a difference. I have not been to the other locations since the change in ownership.

On Archer, just east of Bobak's, is Gilmart. It's very good, but doesn't have near the selection that the Bobak's has.

Life / HELP WITH BUYING A COMPUTER IN POLAND [20]

I bought a Dell Laptop in the U.S. for use in Poland. It works just fine for her. She doesn't have all the letters, but it's not a problem for a her. My advice, send her the money so she can buy one.

Life / Why do Poles drink so much? [161]

Concerning vodka, the vodka section in Carrefour Supermarket is huge! It stretches most of the aisle, from floor to the top shelf. Bottle upon bottle, brand upon brand. The aisle itself is no longer than it's American counterpart, but 75% is vodka, whereas in the U.S. there are many other liquors and liqoueres vying for your dollar.

In the U.S., I've seen stats that indicate >20% of the people consume < 80% of the booze. Perhaps in Poland, the percentages are more in line. This would indicate a lot more moderate drinkers. No proof to back it up, just a thought.

Life / Why don't Polish service workers smile? [36]

I had very good customer service this morning. I visited four stores, and everyone was very pleasant. I think the younger people are nicer. I think that if they are better educated, they have a different outlook.

Life / Why don't Polish service workers smile? [36]

Maybe most of them don't understand you (if you speak in English to them) and are confused?

I'm speaking my best Polish, which isn't very good, but it's not english. I know my opening line, so to speak. I have my money ready, grozny included. I can't make small talk, though.

Life / Why don't Polish service workers smile? [36]

Why don't Polish service workers smile? Cashiers don't smile. Bartenders might. Store clerks? Forget about it. Is life that miserable? I doubt it. In 6 days, three clerks/cashiers/waitresses/bartenderers have smiled. One waitress has smiled. One bartender, and only in response to the question if I thought she was pretty, and one clerk. The clerk works at the piekarnia, and she has my business. Liquor store clerks think I'm hassling them when I ask for a bag.

Food / Mushroom Picking Parties (Poland tradition) [74]

I'm going Saturday with experienced mushroom pickers. we'll be in the in the Tucholskie Bory, south of Gdansk. It's been cool and rainy, so I'm hopeful that there will be plenty of mushrooms to be had.

Food / Trying to sell hot sauce in Poland [7]

My wife is Polish, and I've introduced her to spicy food. She enjoys a nice curry now. Some Polish foods that can go with hot sauce:

Any potatoe, but especially potatoe pancakes
Salmon ceviche ( this could work well, the cold fish, contrasted by the hot sauce )

Mustard and horseradish are popular in Poland, and perhaps you could use hot sauce in conjunction with both of those tastes?

Travel / Gdansk airport to the city [4]

I came from the airport on Saturday to Brezno. I noticed that most of the streets are not well marked, if marked at all. My wife and I were picked up by family. Otherwise, I would have taken a taxi.

USA, Canada / Good Polish/American Restaurants in Chicago area [90]

My wife and I went to Mabenka last night, on Cicero, just south of Midway. It used to be Lithuanian owned, but for the past 15 years Polish people have owned it. The food was very good, as was the service, and the prices are reasonable. Ajoining the dining room is a dancing room with a stage. Last night Polish music was played.
