Life / What's the weather like in Poland? [81]

It's been dark since 5pm in Warsaw today. Yesterday I was buying fresh broad beans whilst not being able to see the top of the office towers from Kino Femina because it was so foggy. !!!!!!

Life / Thunderstorms in Poland [44]

The latest one is upon us. It's as stuffy as hell, breathing is awkward.

It looks like it. It feels like it. It RAINS like it ... but nothing yet in Warsaw.

Life / Opinions/experience about the Polish Police [40]

Maybe I could use them to tie up the hands of some of the female Forum members?!!

Blinks ...

Mind you, the uniform they wear can put you in mind of that anyway. Not so easy in the UK with the helmet ...

Michal your sadist fantasies, should be well kept to yourself, please don't creep the female members out!!

You speak for yourself :) LOL

Love / Sick of a Certain Polish Lady - my boyfriends friend [34]

Find a nice American guy, better the devil you know!

You do make me laugh Shelley. Let's hope she doesn't live in Chicago and find one who isn't nice!

Seriously tho, it took someone breaking your finger to make you dump him? The lying the first time you can talk about, the lying carrying on = goodbye time. You can't tell people what to do, this is vitally true, you can choose how you react to what they do with you and if someone has little respect for you then erase them from your life.

The owing money is a factor perhaps, but even so - if he is calling her then he was playing you for a fool, or he has no cojones, or both. You're better off without him, just try really hard to learn what is worth keeping and then leave all the other crap behind when you meet someone else.

Life / 1st ex-pat assignment advice needed about settling down in Warsaw. [16]

I've been here in Warsaw for just over 2 months officially. I found my apartment on day 2 of being here by looking in the Gazetta Wyborcza with the help of a Polish speaking friend.

Re internet/cable etc worry about that when you get here, because the chances are relatively high that if you move into an apartment block there's a dedicated provider already (my block had Aster). Sky is trickier as you need to get Sky in the UK as I understand it and for BBC/ITV you need a 2m dish.

You'll have lots of questions, for sure (ok I am getting that from my students, napewno!) but searching the topics here will help you, there's lots of very helpful people and lots of advice from people who know a lot more than me (including the wonderful MagdalenaG :) ).

I'd contact you directly but you've set no email contact - I moved here from Leamington Spa so feel free to drop me a line, can recommend a very good local transport company who are not too expensive :)

Life / I live in Warsaw and my hot water is brown!!! [32]

The thing I always loved (I use this ironically) about London was what came out of your nose at the end of the day. Black!! People often complain to me that Warsaw is dirty and yes while some buildings could use a lick of paint or sandblasting it's virtually spotless compaired to London.

Life / Aster City, it's finally installed but what are your experiences with it? [4]

I'm happy with Aster City. My only real problem was a faulty TV receiver, given that my Polish was too rudimentary to risk a phone call I went to see them on Jana Pawla. Engineer swapped out the unit the next day at a time of my convenience. All good so far. Net side exellent, good fast reliable connection.

News / Why Polish police officers have to look like dorks....? [43]

Oh that's just RUBBISH. I mean the new uniform. The models look like they are thinking "Please, just kill me now, I can't take the shame".

Still, no one is going to have kinky fantasies about police dressed like that are they? Unlike the current uniform ... spoilsports!

Love / Need advice with Polish girl, I like her but she has a boyfriend. [114]

I understand that it's up to her to decide what she wants to do, i've even been in this same situation before so I don't know why i'm setting myself up for this again.

I think you already know the answer, sweetie. Ask yourself why you are drawn to women who are unavailable and who you will probably get hurt by - we all have our "fatal attraction" types who feel ever so special but are actually the very worst type of person we could have in our lives.

I'd echo what others have said: don't give your emotions to this unless and until she makes a choice. Sometimes people can't make that choice as fast as they'd like for many factors and if there's one harsh lesson I've learned it's that if someone has a self-fulfilling prophesy then all your love and care and kindness are not going to get you anything but heartache.

Plenty more fish in the sea!

Life / I live in Warsaw and my hot water is brown!!! [32]

Brown limescale???

Thanks guys your replies made me chuckle. My friend here laughed at me and said "Welcome to Warsaw" too. I thought it was rust myself to be honest.

Re drinking the tap water, there seems to be this urban myth that you have to boil the water to make it drinkable. To kill any micro-organisms you'd need to boil it for four minutes or so, so I am assuming this is a hangover from the days when the water wasn't much good here. It is indeed very hard water, but I am used to that in the UK too as always lived in hard water areas.

I actually have a tap in my kitchen which is for filtered water but the filter needs changing - as is evidenced by the trail of limescale on the sink where it drips :)

Travel / Where would be good for this long weekend in Poland? [12]

LOL Magdelena, you actually have in reverse order my preferences and the correct order what I think will probably happen. Warsaw sure is laid back on holidays, way too laid back in fact :)

Life / I live in Warsaw and my hot water is brown!!! [32]

The cold water is ok but the hot tap is dispensing what looks like weak cocoa. Ewwww! Wondering if maybe the roadworks out there have broken a pipe or something, or does this just happen now and then?

Life / City heating system, any ideas on how it works? [15]

The meters for my electricity appear to be underneath the toilet ...

Does it say anything about my experiences here that I just accepted that as being entirely "well of course"?

The main pipes for the hot water run through the bathroom itself which is tiny and gets some residual benefit at least. However, I am wishing I had brought an oil filled radiator I had in my old place in the UK and I might get a small fan heater maybe for autumn.
