Language / Pronunciation difference between Ź and Ż / RZ [83]

I'd say so, yeah.

I could illustrate ur point with zabierz and zabierzmy. The rz is pronounced slightly differently. It depends on the speed of speech amongst other things.

It also depends on the ear. I had a pron class with a group and they had problems with the English differentiation between D, T and ID. For example, moved (D), checked (T) and consisted (ID). It needs clear diction and enunciation for them to get it.

It is final devoicing. Sz is a graphem. It depends what standpoint u approach it from. An appreciation of the difference between morphemes and phonemes is crucial. Graphemes too

For pure sound purposes, yeah, zabierz sounds like sh.

News / POLISH PRESIDENT & PM ACTING LIKE SPOILED BRATS [15]

Monarchs tend to have a different kind of power. That which is not apt to be used. It depends on how much influence they have in any given political system/apparatus.

Look at the consonant before the vowel. Look up final devoicing in English phonetics. This is an exception, it is still voiced but just in a different way.

News / POLISH PRESIDENT & PM ACTING LIKE SPOILED BRATS [15]

People vote for them based on policies, inter alia.[i] Not decisions regarding private jets and their transport to where they need to be.

People voted for Blair and look how public opinion turned against him.

Come on Lesser, monarchs aren't corrupt in any way? They are exemplars of morality?

Life / Deadly Roads - "Are polish roads really THAT dangerous?" [139]

I also see it from a different perspective, as a cyclist. I must say that most drivers are pretty accommodating and give me plenty space. They are not maniacs in that way.

However, I get to see the state of some of the roads. I think that's how I came off of my bike and was lucky not to break my neck. This is a message for any budding/would-be cyclists, take a helmet.

Sometimes we need a scare to change our ways. I was going way too fast on my bike but a momentary lapse of concentration almost cost me dearly. Feckin holes

Life / "Finalistki Miss Polonia 2007" WHO'S THAT GIRL?? [34]

I've noticed that many entrants into Miss Poland are only slightly above average. Before Poles start commenting that this is because their women are oh-so nice, the same rings true for other countries.

Life / How well is English spoken in Poland? [27]

Obviously, it depends where u go. In the countryside areas, u r more likely to run into grunts than rythmical English. As I've said elsewhere, the Poles don't speak English as well as the Benelux or Scandinavian countries, nothing like it.

However, there are those who have a talent or have made it their primary objective to master English. Some of the more detailed discussions I've had really impressed me. Articulation was not a problem in the slightest.

Many Poles now know that practice makes perfect and relish the opportunity to try some English.

Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely

Life / Deadly Roads - "Are polish roads really THAT dangerous?" [139]

I don't wanna see the day when more Hummers/SUV's are introduced onto the roads here. They are like battering rams for people. Just throw some heavy metal into the MP3 player and, voila, one more death will be chalked up.

Life / Deadly Roads - "Are polish roads really THAT dangerous?" [139]

Nah, I've never driven in Poland, hehehe. However, I've been a passenger countless numbers of times and a pedestrian everyday. I was waiting for sb to ask me that, trust u amigo.

It's my armchair commentary if u will, well, couch really, lol

Love / I like this Polish girl, but she doesn't get my... English sense of humor [124]

If u want more sophisticated English humour, especially social commentary and analyses of current affairs, try John Bird and John Fortune. They pretend to be certain characters, e.g the latest was an investment banker, and they perform their sketches very cleverly.

This is not 4 u lovers of raw, slapstick comedy like Benny Hill but it's possible to like both.

It's a defensiveness that I find in some Poles that doesn't square with reality. If I could coin a term, I'd say 'defensive pride'. Others would say misplaced. It's part of what could be called the 'ja wiem' culture. This kind of person thinks they know everything and is too nonchalant.

Thankfully, most are aware of the state of the roads and take extra care. I don't think the Poles are as bad drivers as many make out. Having said that, I'm still cautious at certain crossings. They are put in the most precarious of positions and have almost caught me out as a pedestrian. There's a stubborness that I see. The driver thinks he has a right to just keep on driving and the pedestrian uses their right of way a little too strongly. A bad combo!!

The key is, don't rush

Love / Need advice re: Polish man. What can I do to make him interested? [50]

Remember, he's away from home. He may not even tell u if he has a wife and/or kids.

It was a Stranglers song that said, 'if you don't ask, you don't get'. My mum often used to tell me this too. 'If you don't know what you want, you'll never get it'. The thing is, u've passed that stage as u know what u want.

Don't let a chance slip through ur fingers. Use ur Irish charm :)

I think they are, yes. U can be drifting along and suddenly hit a bump that knocks u off ur stride. However, driver error plays a major part too. Driving is sth u should do when u r calm and alert, not when edgy and agitated. The problem is, there is so much tension that builds up after a tough day in the office, it comes out in all the wrong ways.

I find that too, sausage. I really opened the eyes of my student yesterday by doing sth similar.

We were doing idioms and I let him read the definitions in the book. He's a good student but I knew that definitions alone were not enough. To test this out, I asked him to make sentences with idioms like:

To get on like a house on fire
Like a fish out of water
In hot water
To be thrown in at the deep end etc etc

He captured the sense of 3/8. The others were a little askew, not how we'd use them in different situations. Still, he followed the definitions.

Moreover, back to the thread, sb can introduce a humorous twist, known only to themself.

USA, Canada / MARTIAL LAW IN THE US AND POSTPONED PRESIDENT ELECTIONS? [33]

No corrections were necessary. Wow, a spaceship just flew over my head ;)

I agree, we can talk in terms of classic English humour. Other shows may have different humour but they are still English.

Also, we don't always know at what level humour is received and appreciated. Some just watch comedy because it may be cool. Others try to follow but don't catch the subtle nuances contained within.

Humour can be affected by so many variables.

Good point Switezianka, they are. It just goes to show that u can attach labels such as 'English humour' but, in reality, it goes a little deeper than that. Humour varies, there is some elasticity there.

The humour of guys and girls on the street differs from that of top comedians/comediennes.
