History / Where did the stereotype of Polish people being stupid come from? [131]

Yeah, they have Masters and degrees but weren't smart enough to find gainful employment. They seem to rest on their laurels and not convert it into a meaningful career.

Also, we were discussing stereotypes. U seemed to be discussing general impressions gleaned from people rather than fixed stereotypes.

All of the above stereotypes have more than a grain of truth to them but only by going and finding out for yourself will you ever come close to the full truth.

History / Poland war propaganda poster - can anyone explain this picture? [292]

We sustained heavy casualties as a result of WWII. There was a lot of unfinished business and it would have dragged on until acceptable resolutions came about. I'm no expert but that was the prevailing view at the time.

Well said gtd!! The fact is that most countries people don't know much, nor even care, about Polish stereotypes. I have asked people to give me some Polish stereotypes and they really are at a loss for words, they just don't know.

When I was growing up, vodka drunks were Russian and sausage munchers were German. Now I KNOW better, I don't need stereotypes. They are a shortcut to thinking

UK, Ireland / BRITS LIKE POLISH FOOD [51]

I am a Brit and think that Polish food is tasty. It's getting a bit colder and Polish food is just the job. It's true that they don't like ready meals. Brits use microwaves more and love stuff like canneloni and lasagne. The Poles prefer more modest dishes with garnishings like cabbage and coleslaw.

Life / PAYING TO TAKE A PISS IN POLAND, it's BIZARRE [77]

Magnets, lol. That was like us crafty Scots who, em, not so cleverly tried to fox the inspectors who came to check if a TV was BW or colour. We just turned the colour off.

In Tesco, yeah. I was gonna put my hand against the panel on the wall but it flushed automatically. Generally, the button in the middle of the cistern tho.

Pissee? Wouldn't that be the golden shower recipient? LOL Surely it was the pisser u meant to say

I agree gtd, communistic times were different and greatly so. I didn't want to suggest that all toilets will be vandalised or made dirty. TBH, when I was writing, I had Katowice in mind. Let's say the 'station dwellers' are so uncoordinated that they will leak everywhere and not think about cleaning up after themselves. It's a sorry sight, I kid u not. Urine, I'm out, LOL

I think it's a good idea. It keeps the bums from going in for nothing and making a mess.

WB, that's not a fault of the system. Maybe u just went in when they hadn't cleaned it yet. People are still wayward with their aim, whether they pay or not.

This is not Trainspotting toilets we are talking about.

Life / GAY PARADE IN WARSAW, PL [87]

Nice posting bluebird. He enjoyed being the 'butt' of jokes. He always liked the 'bottom' line. Rumour has it that he liked a stiff one after a studio session.

He took it hard when Brian threatened to leave the band. He thought he'd be behind him all the way, LOL

Yeah, let them make their own mistakes. We've all made them and, hopefully, have learned from them

News / WAŁĘSA'S LATEST BOOK [7]

He was a to-be leader, give him a break. His problem is that the 2 who levelled allegations against him were of high standing and credible. He has successfully defended himself b4, but new evidence keeps coming out against him

£atwo do zrozumienia seems to be, but this is only based on observation and I have no sound grammatical basis for saying this

Love / Dating a Polish guy..acceptance in family? [45]

I think there may well be a lack of acceptance at first, just like in some Asian cultures. They may only like complications in a language they can argue with sb in, LOL.

Seriously tho, I have had a good experience so far with my GF's parents. Maybe it's cuz I am just that, the kinda guy u can take back to ur parents. However, I have earned their trust in many ways, a sure bet in their eyes. Win their trust if u can, that's a challenge 4 u.

I think u have just been unlucky in meeting ultra-traditional and conservative folk. It could also be that u r part Asian. They don't always have the most favourable of impressions when it comes to Asians. Sad but true!!
