Language / IS "MY Z BRATEM" OK FOR "MY BROTHER AND I"? [28]

you and I is bad grammar

Wrong. "You and I" is correct. "You and me" is not... kind of! I prefer "thee and me" anyway.

Someone is talking to you and me. (I'm nopw not so sure this one is correct but it probably should be)
You and I are talking. (This is definitely correct)

Language / POLISH NOMINAL SUFFIXES? [4]

Do all words ending -cja originate from the French -sion/-tion ending?

'-oł' such as "koscioł" (church), "anioł" (angel), seem to convey a concept more than anything else.

Osioł is glad to be in good company, although humility should naturally prevent me from such boastfulness. There's often room for a donkey in a good nativity scene.

News / British food exports to Poland up 53% [43]

Its on a big spit and they slice hunks of meat off it

And it mysteriously grows when you're not looking. Any more than that, I probably don't want to know.

News / All this mess about Danzig... [122]

Sakhalin to Shanklin (that's on the Isle of Wight, by the way).

The reason I mentioned Chukotka and Chelsea is the former president of the Republic of Chukotka and one of his business interests. I was making a political point of sorts.

News / England and Poland are friends [28]

Talk of Jews only came into this thread for Luki's apparent anti-English rant. I have thoughts on the subject of why he posted this stuff, but I'm still waiting for him to explain for himself.

Maybe there's an Aberdeen on Long Island. Maybe it has a Hugh community.

Russia should be stretched from Alaska up to Scotland.

A bit like stretching from Chukotka to Chelsea?

Language / How do people mispronounce your Polish names? [60]

its also a little dangerous if you think about it

Without being performed by a professionally trained vocal practitioner, Polish names can actually cause medical problems.

there is no chance in hell anybody who isn't Polish would be able to pronounce that

You haven't met any multilingual donkeys then?
youtube.com/watch?v=fW0J9G1Jz9A

I saw my name written down by a Polish chap a couple of days ago. Various bits of it were missing and an L had been turned into an R. So from now on I might deliberately mispronounce his name.

But as for being misunderstood in tone rather than language, this can happen all too easily, no matter what language is being used, whether first language or second.

The tone of BB's point about Gdańzig was easy for me to understand... although I may be wrong.

Unlike BB, I refuse to use smileys to indicate the tone of what I am saying, so I can be misunderstood equally, if not more. I find irony and deadpan humour funny and that is my excuse. I'm not so keen on people laughing at their own jokes.

UK, Ireland / Christmas Eve dinner in the UK [8]

Is it considered rude to bring anything with me (other than one or two Christmas gifts)? I mean, they're not expecting me to supply a carp or a swan or anything, are they?

UK, Ireland / Christmas Eve dinner in the UK [8]

I might just hijack this thread for my own evil purposes. Partly because answers to bluemisiu's question seem not to be forthcoming, partly the title is actually relevant to what I want to talk about, but mostly because I am evil.

I have been invited to a Polish workmate's house on Christmas Eve. I gather that Christmas Eve is the bigger day for festivities amongst Poles rather than Christmas Day itself. I have been promised vodka. If anyone knows the hand-to-the-throat drinking gesture... well, when the word "drink" was mentioned, that hand gesture to accompany it looked pretty flipping serious, with tensed muscles and gritted teeth., so my question is...

will I make it as far as Christmas Day?

Life / NO ANTI-CHRISTMAS RAMPAGE IN POLAND! [9]

PC types

PC types... and types and types and types... threads, threads and more threads.

Anyway, it is a bizarre phenomenon because many people of other religions appreciate the fact that Christmas is celebrated, maybe because religious people have a better understanding of other religious people than of atheists, and people who follow their own traditions understand others who follow traditions better than the understand those who seek to eliminate traditions.

Nobody is forcing the nutters

They will probably be celebrating winterval or Decemberfest.

Life / Are Polish People Hypochondriacs? [50]

The chaps I work with seem to find it impossible to allow themselves time off to be sick. They come in and spread their germs around.

News / British food exports to Poland up 53% [43]

I reckon the UK led the way in health scares related to food. It means that now we've got our act together whereas many other countries have never been forced to look at what they are doing wrong, and may well be continuing with dodgy agricultural practises.

Anyway, judging by how little UK food produce was ever exported to Poland, this statistic could be a reflection of the number of kanapki taken on coaches as packed lunches for the 30 hour journey back to Poland before Christmas.

Following on from Alphabetti Spaghetti, how about "Moggy & Doggy Pierogi" - pierogi shaped like household pets?

What do Brits see in Marmite?

A gateway to another dimension. Maybe even an image of the Virgin Mary like you get in the occasional Mexican aubergine (this usually depends on some butter and toast crumbs accidentally getting mixed in).

What to Australians see in Vegemite?

Life / The Polish Moustache [35]

Unsuprisingly, the Adam Małysz is the closest to what I was thinking of, only he has the bit just above the chin that kind of detracts from the purity of moustacheness. I wasn't thinking of some elaborate handlebar type creation, just an "I can be bothered to shave most of my face, but the bit under the nose can stay"-type tache.

So far, if there was an all-PF moustache competition, it is hard to imagine anyone beating Pawian!
