UK, Ireland / Polish homeless in the UK [42]

Please post them for me to read.

Find them yourself, I did.

I find it hard to believe considering that the vast majority of brits working in poland are skilled proffesionals. You are hardly going to see a toilet cleaning brit workin for less money in eastern europe.

You are missing the point. Even highly skilled professionals end up on the streets, it doesn't matter what country they are in. So then, yes, they will take any job given to them in that matter.

How many british people sleep among dirt and rats in poland or any other country for that matter.

I don't believe there are official statistics at the moment but I've just read some articles about it. Don't imagine for one minute there are no homeless Brits in Poland.

If you are bored you could perhaps research the subject and return to us with a detailed report and some valid stats.

Life / "Gdzie jest barszcz?" How do I get talking Polish with real Poles? [16]

I used to help out with a local Polish community group.

That's a good idea indeed. There are many ways you can help out at places like that, including helping people who are learning English.

"speciality foods" section in the local supermarket, until someone who sounds potentially Polish comes along.

lol - you can try that although it's my experience that the people who hit the "speciality food" are not usually Polish but natives :)

You could find out where your local Polish shop is and nip in there, get chatting with the people in there and explain that you want to submerge yourself more in the Polish community and you are learning the language. They should be able to help you with local Polish clubs etc (especially if the shop has been there a while).

You could also tell us where you are located and we might be able to help you further ;)

UK, Ireland / Why British murder Polish? [41]

It seems to me that person who wrote the original post might actually only get their thoughts from the media (which often only reports the negative things) and nowhere else.

There are many Polish people living in my area none of them have been murdered, none have had their houses set on fire, none have had anti-Polish slogans written on their houses. None have been in labour camps. In fact, they are all part of the community.

The three Polish shops nearby are all part of the community and have never been vandalised.

Yes, there have been instances of violence, murder and vandalism around the COUNTRY but then the victims have not all been Polish.

It is only a very, very small and sick minority that display anti-Polish sentiments.

Exactly.

UK, Ireland / Polish parents hang themselves at their Lincoln, UK home [66]

how stupid and selfish to do that leave two kids behind how sad.

Let's just hope everything in your life goes swimmingly then.

I'll never understand this comment about suicide, followed by the "cowardly act" comment..

Neither do I. It's like people who say "I would never commit suicide". You just don't know that.

Patrycja19

Good posting. The human mind is a strange thing, so many things can change what goes on inside of it and, as you say, these changes are uncontrollable. If a person doesn't have someone nearby who recognise these changes and help them then it goes un-noticed and tragic things often happen as a result.

Love / Getting Engaged to Polish girl, asking permission from her dad? [19]

If a Polish guy asked my father for permission to marry me, I'd feel rather offended

Personally, I wouldn't feel offended. It's a nice tradition that a guy should inform a Father of his honourable intentions towards his daughter. After all he's only informing the Father of the intention to ask the daughter. It's still the daughter who says yes or no.

Life / Polish Radio and TV stations online? [68]

Thanks Piorun, I'll try it in a bit, I'm listening to something else at the moment :)

Clear as a bell...

Life / Polish Radio and TV stations online? [68]

I listen to orla.fm from time to time - it's in English and Polish

I tried to open that but was refused. Something to do with upgrading the media player but I have the most recent so I don't know what went wrong there. Which media player do you listen to it in? :/

PD vTuner is cool. It has my favorite stations from radiostacje.com and then some!

They've just added 3 more radio stations but I'm not sure which ones. :)

Love / Getting Engaged to Polish girl, asking permission from her dad? [19]

he dosent speek any english

Does he have someone in Poland who can translate a letter written in English? That's probably your best bet if there is.

Even if you write in English, you might receive your reply in Polish so is there someone other than you girlfriend who can translate for you?

Whatever way you go about it, you'll earn points for asking her Father first ;)

Good luck. :)

Life / Smokers in Poland..... price rise. [47]

In Scotland.

I'll never know the reason behind the boxes of 16 (apart from it being a rip-off). I was never fussed because I never smoked.

Life / Smokers in Poland..... price rise. [47]

16 in a box for 20,

That's right, the machines in pubs and clubs only dispensed boxes of sixteen for the same price as a box of 20 in the shops. Rip off indeed.

Are cigarettes advertised in Poland?

Holly Moley!

Not heard that in a while :)

What about alcohol? Does that look set to climb or just cigarettes for the moment?

Life / Smokers in Poland..... price rise. [47]

its not going to stop anyone smoking

Nope. It just means they spend less on something else. And the government get more money. Plus the money they'll make from people in Warsaw who forget about the public shelter smoking ban on September the 1st.

I wonder how many people will get caught out that day!

UK, Ireland / Help - posting a letter to Poland from the UK. [12]

LC - I think you'll still need to have it weighed for Airmail but I can't remember for sure. It seems light so it would probably be less than 4 1st class stamps!

Check royalmail.com for more info. :)

Life / Cigarette Smoking in Poland [146]

It's currently illegal to smoke in a certain style of bus shelter here as it comes under "enclosed spaces" but I have yet to hear of anyone actually being fined for smoking in one (which people more certainly do).

Here we have Environment Wardens - will they be having something similar in Poland?

I haven't been through all of them (!) but if you're looking for a particular kind of music, you are likely to find it here. :)
