Travel / Donkey visits Poland [76]

It looks like you did not stay long. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Next time go in the summer, so you can see more of the outdoor scenery. You know, get in the tourist mode.

Well, it's gotta be a big enough house to have all the people there and stiil comfortable. Nice.
Did the dog like donkey?

Travel / Donkey visits Poland [76]

Osiol, some pictures please! It sounds like a great visit regardless of cold :)
I'm sure the "sneaked" medicine helped more than the tea (with lemon and honey?)
Who is the family you're talking about? Feel free to dwell.

Language / What language do you like better, Polish or English? [71]

Here is a fragment of a recent email i received from a website I subscribe too:

"If you speak English, you know words from at least a hundred different languages. That's because English has borrowed words from languages everywhere, and continues to do so.

All living languages borrow, though not to the same degree. Each new word brings its own color to the mosaic of the language, just as each new person does to a population, making it richer and vibrant.

We see words derived from Greek, Latin, Spanish, French, etc. every day, but this week we'll look at a few words from languages that are not so well known -- Javanese, Coptic, Tamil, Shelta, and Hawaiian -- and also learn a little about those languages"

wordsmith.org:80/words/lahar.html

So, it looks like English is not really an original language...for the ones who still learn, take heart, it's not that difficult.

Life / Polish Birthday Traditions [42]

For my 30th Birthday my sister sent me a piece of sand paper with the words: "It' s tough and rough to hit 30". lol. I did not feel it then! Really. It did nothing for me. Then I hit 40 ...also like a breeze...(I'll stop here) :)

I remember my 16th in Poland. It was " a coming of age" year. The Beatles played...

18 was the proud year, I was an adult, I could vote, (hehehe, I did it once in Poland before I left) and I could legally drink...not that anybody cared if I went to the store being 10 and bought a bottle of vodka or wine saying it was for my father...

21, don't really remember anything special.

PD, you are just a baby, still! OK, let's say - a babe.

Love / Divorced Polish women [63]

there are guys who dont care if women have kids, but thats a smaller percentage of men.

I have to agree with this one when it comes to polish men. American men don't seem to care as much. Sometimes, the family will try to break it apart. "Why can't you find somebody without kids?"

Life / "I can spot a Pole a mile away" - Polish fashion? [146]

In Kielce, Liroy (a hip hop singer) made scyzorek (like pen-knives or Swiss army knives) a focus of his rants but it was all jokey and light-hearted.

LOL.. I'm from Kielce district. I brought one (scyzoryk) with me when I came to US, right in my purse, but it was long, long time ago...Good old Gerlach make. It's has all the little, handy tools and it never leaves my purse.

Nowadays, I have to remember to leave it at home when flying or going to any government buildings. Darn metal detectors. I went to court this spring and forgot I had it. When I realized it, I got out of line, went back outside and buried it in the bushes. I picked it up later.

That's how I love my scyzoryk!

(just as I'm reading some posts here it opens by itself, ready for action...) :)

Feedback / Why are some requests for translation shoved into the random chat thread? [42]

Maybe shoving some requests for translation into some random, deletable topic is a way of teaching the public - pay attention, you are at 'some" website, check it out, read some...whatever...or, maybe it's just a tired, fed up moderator. I don't know.

Michal's opinion about "simple minded Poles".

Hehehehe, I don't think there is anything on PF which can change that. Nothing goes thru his thick skull :) - frozen in time circa 1980.

Love / Are polish girls generally curvy, tall with nice round butts [74]

I don't think people quit smoking because of some print warning on the cigarette pack.

Unless you consider a $1 can of diluted sugar with some artificial coloring and flavor cheap.

Hey, it's a 'secret" coca-cola recipe! :)
It should be available in 'specialty" stores for at least $3.00 a can. Forget the $.50 vending machines. Make it a treat (for Christmas).

Kidding aside, buy whole foods, cook at home, reduce portions, don't have the junk food hanging around check out registers, make the people 'work" for junk - do not facilitate it - just to name a few ideas.

making users pay would drive almost all away.

Yes, advertising pays for everything, never underestimate the power of advertising.
I'm an avid reader of Consumers Reports, because it does not accept advertising. They don't need to praise, let's say, the Ford product because Ford paid for it. They can afford to say what they think about Ford.

The same here. I don't want to see "XYZ" add, just because it works for some...did not mean any scary mongering "global warming is gonna get you" stuff.

also no forum without the visitors.

Yes, there will always be forums, the paid ones or not. The ones who are paid for/donated,without adds, might be a better quality one in a long run. People can debate without being attacked.

On the other hand, I would not want a forum to turn into a club, where everybody chirps the same.
Trolls, annoying at times, put a different spin on any topic.

the entire bodies being spherical (starting in their teen years) as it is the case in some countries ;)

Yeah, that's what i meant...the abundance of food does destroys young girls bodies. Well, not only girls. The boys are chubby too.
Raise the price of food then? Like in Europe? I think food is way to cheap here.

Feedback / Why are some requests for translation shoved into the random chat thread? [42]

Nothing is really free z_darius. Somebody, somewhere is paying for it. I don't like the forums congested with adds.

Maybe this is why the Admin has their own rules. The PF is theirs.

It seems to draw enough of a crowd anyway. Many people have a short attention span and move on when they feel they don't get enough attention/applause here.

When I visit a site that is 100% free, and make a first post I'm extra cautious not to make a stupid mistake and not to add unnecessary work for other people who do the moderating job for free. Besides, those who are new and request translations only aren't usually the members we all need.

It works the same is in a real life. You get what you pay for.

News / Will Poland become green? [122]

Good video, did not see it whole yet. Climate has always had ups and downs in temperature and we are more at the mercy of our dear Sun and not much also. Industrial development may have made a tiny dent in it, but nowhere near the proven temperature changes through centuries and millenniums.

All this hoopla about 'global warming" seems like a hoax, a fad and a political game playing. Some day it will pass and the media will find some other topic to torment the public with...
