USA, Canada / Why aren't Polish people immigrating to Canada instead of the UK? [148]

Your son is a UK resident is he not?

It doesn't matter on PNP whether he was from Timbuktoo or Brixton. And my point was that the experience levels are not always that important. Unskilled would be difficult though. And haven't we done the toliet cleaning joke to death yet?

ive looked into that a bit and unless your highly qualified you aint got much chance of a visa unless you got $400,000 Canadian dollars

Too black and white. My son is on a the BC provincial nominee programme and he had all of a year's experience. In two months he will likely get permanent residence status. It's who you know.

But where does it stem from?

It based on an observation that Canadians aren't that bright and tend to be very large and stand around with their mouths agape with their lower lip just above their navel. Just harmless Yankee fun making.

By virtue of Whistler alone Canada is a cool place !!!

There is no sleeping in the streets.

Yes there is. I saw some in BC - Vancouver, Kamloops.

But this minor point notwithstanding I agree that Canada is a pretty damn fine place to be. My eldest son is making his life there now. Lucky so and so.

The wild animals that still roam free.

Yep. too free for my liking last time I was there. Grizzlies have very bad breath you know

Life / Polish Driving Licence. [314]

£400 - why not just take a week's intensive course and get your license legally. If you have experience you can do 10-15 hours and it will work out cheaper. Also your insurance would not be invalidated if you ever hit me.

be legal, be safe and less likely to end up in hospital if you do hit me.

Life / Teens in Poland, their typical life, schooling, influences, etc. [32]

Good post Magdalena. The pace of the erosion of our civil liberties is quickening. The state knows better is the new mantra. It's all sticking plaster over symptoms in an attempt to avoid having to deal with the causes, viz poor education, lack of parental resposibility and engendering a work ethic. Symptoms of a fat and lazy economy I suspect.

Travel / How Can I Not be the "Ugly American" Tourist in Poland? [97]

what about angelina jolie, hally berry, jenniffer connelly, Brad Pitt?

Hmm. My only experience with a famous American thespian in Poland was with Steven Seagal who was filiming The Foreigner in Warsaw. He and his entourage, many of whom were pretty drop dead gorgeous, turned up at my, then, favourite restaurant the Fret@Porter. I and my friends were despatched down the far end of the place whilst the Seagal party got the best seats. Funnily enough Mr Seagal was very quiet and reserved which was more than could be said for most of his party.

Travel / Warsaw: A day in the life [16]

At times like those I found it best to retire to another type of hole, the watering variety. Either that or call a cab

UK, Ireland / UK bus company boss jailed for hiring an incompetent Pole [71]

This polish bus driver couldnt even read road signs that expressed danger

So he should not have been employed. Fault lies with management who are under cost pressures and a difficulty in finding staff and who are in effect cutting corners and jeopardising the safety of customers and other road users.

Blame the management brothers

how should I dress so that I don't stick out like a sore thumb or cause offense

Like everybody has said. Be yourself, dress so that you feel comfortable. If you feel comfortable then you will appear relaxed. You will have a great time.

Twenty years ago I could have given the advice not to wear those horrible checked sports jackets but the US has moved on.LOL

Love / Why do Polish Women Think They Know Better? [134]

Why do Polish Women Think They Know Better? Interesting question that prompted me to ask the wife. Her view is that mainly they are usually always right and that all other people on the planet are incapable of any form of logical thought, especially males who she points out usually think with other parts of their body rather than the brain. A typical example of the Polish woman confidence emerged only this weekend. She who must be obeyed has invaded my last refuge by playing golf. Sadly she has reached the standard required to venture out on the main courses at my club and insisted that we play together. All went reasonably well, excepting of course I was sulking the whole way round, until I managed to blast a ball into a hazard. As every golfer knows the rules of golf are extremely complex. Witness that the pros will always call in a rules official for a ruling to avoid being disqualified or suffering a penalty. This did not stop Mrs SZ from immediately telling me I had broken the rules when dropping my ball. Her verdict was utterly wrong and for once I was right. The remainder of the round was taken up by a constant stream of bickering. When we reached the club house she sought the advice of others to prove me wrong. Of course they supported me , except for one old dear who sided with the wife. This was taken as definitive proof despite endless trawls through the rule book and painstaking explanations from me. Even now she is confident that she is right, I am wrong and she thinks it’s a conspiracy against her.

Law / Ikea suspends all investments in Poland [35]

I quite like IKEA

Me too. Nice meatballs in the caff. Not to keen on the walk all around the store to find out the bit you need ia at the end of the walk though.

Are other companies thinking of stopping investment? How are the likes of Carrefour affected for example
