Travel / Nice Place in Poland? [14]

Ruda Chebzie ;)

The centre of the universe. Well, of Europe maybe. Still, not bad.

I'd rather pass that honour to Prague.

Life / NANNY STATE in POLANd vs RABBLE? [25]

You are right, the split could hardly be described as fractious. There is evident scope for reconciliation and reassembling of former ranks.

However, are the dichotomies too wide to bridge the schism between the two churches?

Well Sonny Jim, your analysis please.

News / No Way, No Apology! Poland has every right to support Georgia! [115]

I agree with BB, there is no other sizeable economy who could take no1 spot from Germany. They have exported everything under the sun.

This seems to be Polish politics, blow with the wind until you find a suitable direction.

Germany is losing its leading position in the EU?? I don't think so. To who, Britain? LOL, don't make me laugh.

As for Sarkozy, he is wasting his time on international duty, pointing the finger here and there but not doing much else.

Did you have Romania in mind? Prodi would be proud of you :)

You are not buying anybody. They can survive for some time longer, until Yuschenko disappears and a puppet regime is installed by Timoshenko. The Baltic States are part of the EU, you cannot just envelop them willy-nilly.

The moment you go for the Baltic states is the moment that a major conflict would flare up. Putin is too clever for that.

Russians are those who speak Russian, that's drivel. Kasparov speaks Russian and he is Azerbaijani. A Latvian speaks Russian (as well as Latvian), are they Russian? The same goes for other Baltic states. Even older people in Poland speak Russian, I'd never call them Russian tho.

Oh, I agree fully Prince. However, that doesn't mean that the Russians agree with me. They are the proverbial puppets, Ukraine and Georgia. Self determination should remain with them but Russia is hanging on for dear life.

Still, Timoshenko is quite pally with Russia so there is no imminent crisis. Ukraine has enough gas to see them through to April.

All this grandiose talk, so delusional. NATO is about checks and balances. Ukraine and Georgia are strategic assets for Russia. Putin often mentions that Stalin was Georgian by birth. Ukraine is undoubtedly Eastern European so Russia wants to retain a foothold there.

I don't think Russians really fear any invasion. More of a mild incursion into territory that they see as being essentially Russian in nature (Ukraine and Georgia)

News / Polish vs russian economy [57]

with Kasparov

Now, although I believe in the great things which Putin has achieved, turning the economy into a success story, Kasparov sees otherwise. You know, you need neutral statistics to verify the claims of the media. Kasparov, for me, is more credible and has done his homework.

Life / Bad opinion about Polish people - rumour or the truth? [90]

I agree, Wrocław. Poles are beginning to take on that most irritating of Western ways. I know that many Brits think this way. I mean, to want what your neighbour has and play by foul means to get it.

Life / JOKES IN TODAY'S POLAND? [20]

Because the Tusk gang are jokes, it doesn't mean that they tell jokes ;)

Just kidding, I'm neutral on Tusk as, well, he is very neutral and gives people little to discuss.

Life / NANNY STATE in POLANd vs RABBLE? [25]

Well, there needs to be more than a joint belief in evolution for that to happen. Both churches believe in it.

Is being a Christian about faith alone or faith with deeds, lesser?

Life / Bad opinion about Polish people - rumour or the truth? [90]

There is a lot of truth there, mbiernat. Cultured? Some are, some aren't. Like everywhere. Safer than the US? Mostly. Some parts aren't. Educated? Some are, some aren't. Generally yes. Humble? Yes, but that's changing.

Very low crime? Maybe, fancy a ticket to Wołomin or Pruszków?

And right-wing Christians like Bush are morally upstanding citizens, paragons of virtue? The behaviour of English children is determined by far more than the Anglican church. It is but a minor influence.

Yeah, try telling that to the tax office though. If you are 1 grosz out, they are on top of you. My tax calculations always come to a different figure than those of my expert. I pay for peace of mind, I have no wish to enter bureaucratic wrangles.

Law / Żabka stores in Poland - Is it a franchise? [5]

The position is not clear in my eyes. All Żabka shops were supposed to be up for sale, there was a sign to that effect in the windows of the shops (Nov 2008). That seems to have passed and the position has returned to normal.

I'm with wildrover on this, I think it is a franchise but I'm not sure.

Food / This goes good with vodka.... or mix it with whatever [7]

Kubus is more of a health drink for kids. Carrot flavour is quite popular. Of course, some adults drink it. Nothing like in Japan though. Wow, check out a drinks machine there, filled with stock cures for hangovers and salubrious offerings. I often filled up with a couple before an 8-hour shift.

Think also about the feeling of being cheated. I've sometimes felt like not paying tax here given the huge sums they ask for. And for what? Funding causes which I have little say in or approve of. Like firing sth off into the void.

The Poles are paying ever more for property. Deduct ZUS, then you contemplate tax payments. Look at the Youtube case that hairball provided some months ago on the morality of tax payments. There was a full inquiry into it, exploring the justifications for civil disobedience and tax avoidance.
