Language / Ponieważ and "bo wcześniej " [11]

The habit extends to English. I was told never to follow a comma with but or because but I do it because of how I write in Polish. Many Polish students write, 'I think, that... or 'I know, that...' because of myśle, że or wiem, że.

Więc is also therefore. Że does mean that but one word can have many meanings as you know. Zrób, że to can mean 'do it'. No reference to that.

Food / Where do you go shopping for food in Poland? [26]

That was smart, Sean BM. Clearly not hungover today :)

It is important to wash off as much chemical content as possible. I always did this back home with apples in particular. Natural products they aren't.

News / WHARTON AND COELHO IN POLAND? [10]

Maybe, but not from what I've seen. I have a lesson, which I've done 4 times now, where they have to describe the name on the card. If one student in a group doesn't know, I pass it onto another and the student who formerly had the card isn't allowed to guess for obvious reasons.

NOBODY, out of 20 students or so, has even heard of him. Don't take that as representative but it may tell a story. I also had to Google him.

Oh, my fiancee knows him (and Coehlo). Chalk up one to the tally ;)

I agree. You can pick up some great food. I don't like the markets in summer for all the wasps. Spring is coming and that's the best time to toddle off down to the markets.

News / How would you describe Poland to a 2nd grader? [21]

I agree again, Prince. Which begs the question, why should Eastern European be a racist and pejorative term? Your answer is key to developing understanding.

The Western influence for sure. I walked round Wrocław and saw the Germanic influence clearly. Architecture is very much a part of the national fabric.

News / How would you describe Poland to a 2nd grader? [21]

Language - I noticed that the Balkan AND Baltic states were not mentioned. How is it that I can understand some Serbian and I have never studied it? It's a Slavic language and I know parts from Polish. Serbian and Croatian are not so different from Polish at times.

Culture - What separates an Eastern European culture from a Western one? Couldn't it just be that they are different without a clear reason why?

History - You have a point here, noimmi. However, the collapse of communism was a monumental event, a milestone if you will. Look at the historical transformation of countries to the present. How is Poland different from the West now?

Well, the fall of communism and the consequent change of ideals and Balcerowicz's economic initiatives altered the status IMHO. Status can be changed.

What makes Poland Eastern European, noimmi?

News / Polish Japanese relations (history and present time) [90]

Decent Poles don't, just the racists. I can't remember why, but we got onto the topic of Poland when I taught there. Nothing but positive comments. The Japanese love Chopin and the Poles.

Language / Czy lubi pani kawe z cukrem? [6]

This is easily explained, ArcticPaul.

The Poles say ze mną simply because it sounds better than z mną. Z tobą is ok.

The same applies to w poniedziałek and we wtorek. Z cukrem is pronounced quickly.

News / WHAT POLISH THINGS COULD/SHOULD BE EXPORTED? [27]

Yeah but the brewers may disagree with you. Tennents and McEwans being 2 notable Scottish ones. Their ales and their lagers are 2 separate things. They taste different too. I'd much rather drink their ales than their lagers, especially the strong ones (lagers). Tennents Super is anything but that, :) :)

It depends on what British school you work in or area that you live in. In general, they are more of a handful but they also have more zip to them. Choose what you prefer.

I wouldn't have a pop at the US. These are isolated incidents caused by irresponsible parents being slack.

Caffreys is not a beer. It's more like a stout. Żywiec is piwo which means beer. The same goes for the other ones. Lager is lighter, around 4%. Beer in Poland,

Tyskie: 5.6%, Lech: 5.2%, Żywiec: over 5%, Żubr: 6% etc etc

Tetley make bitters I think. Lager is jasne piwo. Ask for lager here and you get weird looks.

Can you give any examples of draught Polish lager, time means? I always associate Poland with beer and not lager. Lager is more British.

Human trafficking, sheesh. Polo had/has a point, kids appear to be better behaved here. Still, hardly models to follow. They still throw paper airplanes around the room, lol.

No worries, McCoy. Mention of religion and children, hmm...

Religion has become a divisive force in the world. It's good that you have belief in sth but, for me, it's a private issue. When you front religion and don't feel it/let it happen, you are moving into murky waters. Look at those mad readers of the Koran, they're off their chump. The same with any fundamentalists. The Bible is like a major project, as is the Creationism Vs Evolution debate. There is a wealth of info on it, let people seek it out for themselves and don't export it in our modern free access to information, global society.

1) Hospitality - Many other countries value this quite highly, Polo. They might just do things a little differently. Scotland values this highly

2) Tradition - We live in Europe, Polo. There is a richness of cultural diversity here. Again, Scotland is steeped in tradition.

3) Foods - Lots of people eat light suppers to avoid indigestion and also value snacks. The Poles have a lot of fast food, not the leaders here. Britain has many nibbles.

4) Tighter-knit families - The French drink wine round the table with their kids and are family oriented. The Brits lived under conservatism and family values for a long time. Europe is more hybrid and less racially pure than Poland. You don't impose such things, you work on them.

5) Better behaved kids - Kids are kids. You are affected by romanticism if you really believe that kids are much better behaved. What do you know of kids in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and other countries, Polo?

6) More vibrant religious life - The options are there, Polo. Show me vibrant Catholicism at work and I will be impressed :)

7) Wildlife areas - Poland was blessed with this, it's a question of geography. Scotland was too, as are many other countries.

Bubba was a shrewd businessman with top-notch acumen. I still know when he is around. As he said, just not as BW.

Food / Favorite Pierogi? [56]

Is there a specific name for pierogi with rice, kasza and mushrooms? The lady at the shop recommended them to me. I put butter on top and added Worcestershire sauce. Very nice combo indeed, polecam! Not yet my favourite but tasty nonetheless.

News / Solaris - not so new but already famous Polish bus manufacturer [26]

I was gonna create a thread on this until I used the search function. I've never used the checker but Wrocław told everyone that it should be used.

Anyway, I must say that the quality of buses has improved. Solange did well here. All the buses are tailored and hand-crafted to precise standards. This is more like Germanic efficiency.
