Feedback / Polish Forums Checker [41]

Basically it lists all the threads that have been posted in since you last checked it.

If you haven't used it for a while it'll be full so you should click on "reset the checking date". That can be found in black writing among the red writing at the top. Try todays date. It'll clear more of the threads. Clear the rest by scrolling down to the bottom and ticking the grey box next to "delete selected". Do this for each page until you have only a few threads left.

After doing that, if you use the checker each day you'll see which threads have been posted in (even after the disappear off the latest discussions page). Remember to deleted the selection each day though or you'll end up with hundreds.

Hope that helps a little more. :)

Feedback / Polish Forums Checker [41]

It's where you can keep track of all the recently posted-in threads throughout the entire site or in selected forums. If you check and refresh it daily it's a handy tool for keeping track of where people are posting on the forums and what "hot topics" there are. :)

Life / Uniformed people in Poland - explanation needed. [17]

Believe me PD the UK doesnt do things that badly, and Poland doesnt do things that well. Wait till u live here, u'll see

I used to think that until I called the police one night when a group of 5 boys trashed a woman in my streets garden and I called the police. I said, a woman in my street has had her garden trashed by 5 young males and now they are harassing her in the street. The 999er said "are they physically attacking her" and I said "not yet" and they said "so it's not an emergency." I replied that it pretty much was because she is in her 80's and I was about to hang up and go out to get her and they asked me name and I said "why is that important?" and they said they needed a name to dispatch an emergency vehicle and I said "but Crimestoppers says you don't need to provide your name and address."

I'm still waiting on the Police to arrive on that one by the way and that was four years ago. When I contacted them to ask about the lack of response they said they'd done drive-bys. So I told them I must have missed that while I was waiting in casualty with the woman and hung up.

Don't they have a little sign that they ask you to place after your shopping saying "till closed"? (or in Polish).

Life / A trip to a Polish supermarket [136]

depends on the time of the day, but i gotta say that when there is loads of people around all the tills will be opened. it's not like in tescos in uk when they frantically start ringing a lil bell when they see that quite a large queue forming. tescos, out of all the supermarkets in uk, in my opinion is the worst. and i hate the self check out tills, they are always broken!

Self-checkouts - I won't have anything to do with them. Either it won't eat your notes or it won't accept your card or it breaks down half way through scanning your products. My local store removed them.

Tescos here (for me) seems to be the one with most tills open and in the others there are queues. I was in another supermarket on Friday in a giant queue and they put out a tannoy message listing about 8 names to come to the checkouts urgently and open up...I still waited 20 minutes, no one appeared that I could see...(PD is having a rant! ;)

not normal at all.

Good, somewhere has it right at least.

Life / A trip to a Polish supermarket [136]

ha ha must admit never seen anything like that, when i was single i would have bought it in a flash, now id get a slapped ear for glancing at it, sure it was supposed to be oct 2008.

No, it's Oct 2009 without a doubt. Other breads have Nov 2009 so I asked our chef and he said it was something about long-lasting (freezable or something) and should remain fresh, when unopened, for a year. Worries me that.

In the bigger stores in Poland is it normal to have 23 checkouts but only ever about 7 in operation (like it is here)?

not like uk which will last 9 days with all preservatives,

How many preservatives do you think are in bread that has a sell by date of Oct 2009 like I found in my work today? I prefer to buy fresh bread that only lasts a couple of days.

Food / Potato cake with bacon? Placki ziemniaczane. [14]

babka ziemniaczana?

Why did you have to post a picture? ;) Now I'm hungry and it's too late to cook... :}

I would like to bake it in a casserole dish, as we're having a pot luck at work.

I think it's nicer to bake it. We had a mini pot luck at work recently - I took my gołąbki! :) Most of the other dishes were Romanian though... :)

USA, Canada / Ann Arbor Polish Film Festival [4]

Thanks for posting this. :)

The film "Lejdis" is supposed to be funny but with a weird humour. I was supposed to go and see it last Wednesday but didn't get there in the end. :/

Have you been to the festival yourself tjgrz11?

When you were quoting tomekcatkins you hit the quote button above in ukpolska's box rather than the one below tomekcatkins message in his own box so it appeared like you were quoting ukpolska.

Life / PAYING TO TAKE A PISS IN POLAND, it's BIZARRE [77]

-pubs and restaurants
-public libraries, culture centres, university buildings etc.
In a city you can always find a free toilet if you know where to look for it.

That's true, you just have to look but I'm not sure about pubs and restaurants. Here most pubs/restaurants want you to be a paying customer before using their toilets so that isn't really free. Many department stores have customer toilets.

UK, Ireland / Poles in Scotland - help required on research project. [20]

poles travel wherever money and benefits are to be found.

Who doesn't though? Overall money creates a better lifestyle and people crave a better lifestyle. Most people don't work for the love of the job but simply the money it generates. Or they may love their job but equally love the money.

Don't sigh Bart. It's not a bad age group. :)

Although I will say, I think that most Polish people who arrive in the UK would fall into that first group. At least from my experience. Having said that, I know a few Polish people who are now encouraging their parents to join them.

Hmm, you are older than me...interesting. ah ah ah :)

Although it's been a long time since I was 18...

Actually, this might be relevant to the topic, the OP should have also included the ages of Polish people when they arrived in UK.

UK, Ireland / Poles in Scotland - help required on research project. [20]

OK, just to try and be helpful I asked my friend these questions. She won't register here (no idea why not) so here goes with her answers...

1. Gender/Age group - 18-24; 25-35; 36-50; over 50
2. What were the main factors that encouraged you to come to the UK/Scotland?
3. How long do you intend to stay in the country?
4. Do you see your stay in Scotland/the UK as permenent or temporary?
5. Do you feel the attraction of the UK is as great as it was when your country first became a member of the EU?

1. - Second group.
2. - job prospects, moved to Bristol first where her sister and brother-in-law were living also travelling, has live in a few places in the UK.

3. - Has no plans to go back to Poland at the moment and if her boyfriend settles in a job they'll most likely stay as she is about to start college here.

4. - See answer 3
5. - No because of the economy in the UK but it should pass. Overall, happy in the UK, moreso where she has settled now.

The second group :(

What's wrong with that? You're a vampire, you're in your 100s! ;)

Life / Public transport on Christmas Day in Poland [10]

It is just that the PKP timetable goes until the 12th of December.

As I said before, they'll release a new one soon. Probably some time in November I would have thought.

Regardless of how my butt looks to others, I prefer tighter fitting jeans just because of the way they feel. They fit nicer for me. :)

Life / What are your favourite Polish Radio stations...? [27]

It's pretty good. There was an English language discussion on there last weekend about Poles in Britain and help for them to get through the current economic climate. It was very interesting.

If you want to listen to some Polish music try and get a hold of this CD I talk about in This Thread. I bought it for a Polish friend and then I bought a copy for myself. :)
