Life / Is it expensive to give birth in Poland? [26]

Why is in necessary in Poland to have to bribe doctors?

It's not necessary. But if they save your life it might be worth considering a large tip/contribution to the Christmas fund..

Work / New English 'teacher' in Poland (I have no qualifications). [119]

Also, the question is: If this person can't learn a language then why should I believe they can teach one?

In sport: There are many trainers who have never achieved fame, but whose students have achieved greatness.

An understanding of teaching is key. Not waffling in some language you half understand.

Keep in mind that I'm on the side of the OP. I do have a hint of Polish in my vocabulary.

I keep it latent for the most part, holding it in reserve for opportune moments.

This is most important. The client will appreciate it more, if they know that you have the answer at hand, but will only tell them when it gets difficult.

And let’s not forget that one should be fluent in Polish in order to teach English to Polanders.

Being a Polish speaker is a minus. Very often it's the parents who are paying and there is snob value on having an English native who speaks little Polish.

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

Also the way verbal warnings (and veiled and unveild threats) are given (and when someone is serious vs bluffing). Again I've known foreigners who completely miss and/or misinterpret communcation that's clear to Poles.

I can understand this having lived here for a few years. Anyone out on a mission, for the first time in Poland, wouldn't have a clue. There are subtle differences in communication that can make all the difference.

History / Polish soldier stories [50]

Some ex-Polish army who served with the British might also qualify for the Veterans Badge. Might be worth checking.

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

Ireland32,

If you come to Poland you'll be making a big mistake.
1. You'll get the door slammed in your face and you won't be able to do anything about it.
2. The other guy will be able to deal with you any way he wishes. You can't watch your back all the time.

What exactly are you hoping to achieve now ?
1. You want to know if she is OK. She is, she just can't contact you.
2. you want to know if your relationship is still sound. I doubt it is. Her family won't allow it.

What is the way forward ?
1. Forget about her.
2. Find her friends and get a message to her. But you still won't know if any reply is from her.
3. Make them think that you have given up... don't do anything for a month... and then have a Polish friend phone to check the situation... then act accordingly

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

Came on her hoping for a bit of advice

The advice is: forget her.

What you have told us is typical of half the stories (of this type) on the forum.

Do a search and you will see.

Of course you can wait for a female perspective from one of the members you might trust. But I'll wager that the answer will be the same.

Food / When did kebab and Vietnamese "bar" come to town? [15]

Ready's have been in Poland for some time. Their menu is based on a kebab style.

Vietnamese food has been available in Wroclaw for a long time. It's not fast food though.

Kebab restaurants/takeaways seem to be quite recent. In the last ten years.

There is also the Polish version of a burger/hotdog in pita bread, topped with salad

Genealogy / KULVINSKI/KULVINCKI/KULWINSKAS [7]

and any alternative spellings,

You do have a spelling problem. There is no letter 'v' in the Polish alphabet.

Sometimes the easiest way to find an alternative spelling is to go to a site like: Ellis Island
Enter a name and see what it throws back at you.

You could also try a name check at: JewishGen.

You also need to do a 'wiki' of Polish history. To help understand the period in question.

UK, Ireland / List of goods taken from living in the UK [64]

Love it so much your off before Summer arrives? thats the best time!

The problem with a British summer is trying to predict which day it will be. And then if it will be morning or afternoon.

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

are they the norm in Polish supermarkets?

I can't say all, because I don't know. But most, Yes.

________________________________________________________

Very often with big supermarkets it's: distance from home, cost, size of car park and speed/time of round trip.

Genealogy / Any information available on the Przedecz camp? [13]

How does it help ?

If you actually read it you might learn something. There is mention of where the Jewish locals were sent and also reference to the Ghetto that was created.

This information might help the OP when checking family documents and photos etc.
I find that when people make posts about past family they are on a voyage of discovery and even the smallest bit of information might help.

I love it how you bastards always refer to Jews as if no one else died, fucking double standards.

Once again, you are jumping the gun. The OP never mentioned faith. The link I have provided is meant as a guide, a starting point, in the search for a camp in the area of Przedecz, nothing more.

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

Quick question, in the attached picture,

I can't get the picture to come up. But the monitor is probably part of the security system. Staff can look at the screen and not the customer.

Biedronka uses it.

Edit: it's the cigarette dispenser

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

Would you say it was because of pay/training/culture etc?

all the above.

don't get me wrong. there are some very helpful staff working here.

Polish shopworkers possibly see their job as a temporary fix. The attitude of customers might not help their mood either. So, in some cases this might cause less than 100% customer service and care.

I sometimes think the customer could do with a change of attitude too.

Also, how do you rate the service you recieve in the UK and Poland? Are staff atttitudes the same, are you served the same way etc?

In general:

Service is much better in the UK.

Staff have a better work ethic in the UK.

Which means that management is probably better in the UK.
