Not so fast. :):):) Władysław IV died in 1648. The first partition of Poland was in 1772.

Do you know how many kings ruled in Poland in the period? :):):)
They were all tragic figures..... :):):)

News / another proof that Poland is a confessional state [18]

well... source isn't important- message is.
do you have any comments about this message?

I have. You shouldn`t present it as an already decided fact. The article in the link you provided is marked by one big question mark. Maybe, probably, allegedly etc etc.

Can`t you see it is made as a form of an advertisement for some leftist group which uses the opportunity and expresses their objection to get a 5 minute fame in the media?

Of course they can`t introduce such a law because it would be unconstitutional.

Have you been in Polish school recently? The only thing you should be worried about the moral / ethic / religious education is the lack of any.

Have you been to a British state school recently?? Polish state schools compared to British ones, not to mention American, are like heaven compared to hell. :):):)

News / SHOULD POLAND/EUROPE BE WORRIED ABOUT RUSSIA?? [90]

Mmm, dream on... Let's wait american withdrawal from Iraq. I hope that all this region will explode with all those rotten, out of date middle aged kingdoms.

As a Russian patriot, you are entitled to such wishes and hopes. Every new conflict in the Middle East will put up the price of oil. Currently it is at about 40$, while Russia needs at least 75$ to keep the balance. Every dollar below 75 means a loss and eating out Russian reserves.

There is a danger that Russians might provoke new wars and conflicts in the ME region to put up the price. :(

News / SHOULD POLAND/EUROPE BE WORRIED ABOUT RUSSIA?? [90]

Yes, it is a game with Poland as a pawn. What will happen with Poland, if something goes wrong?

The situation seems a dead end street. Poland has a choice:

1. Either become a Russian satellite again, thus remove the nuclear threat but decline economically and culturally.
2. Or remain an independent country which rejects Russian imperial advances. The cost will be a constant nuclear threat, but balanced by constant economic and cultural progress.

Which do you think Poles should choose? :):):)

History / Targowice and Bar Confederations [34]

Religion was a distinguishing mark but hardly the reason of the conflict which was rather of social and political nature.
Just a new elite keen to gain some political power and playing smart the independence card.

I agree. This is a version commonly acknowledged by historians. Cossack risings broke up because they demanded the same priviliges that Polish gentry had and were continuosly turned down. Religion plays no role here at all.

And surely, natural polish pans rejected to associate them as equals. That was a blindness of polish elite.

Yes, it was. That is why Poland finally lost Ukraine and its own independence too.

Do you think that it was not because of their religion.

Of course not. Constantine, there was religious freedom in Poland of 7 century till the Swedish invasion in 1655. The greatest rising by Cossacks was in 1648. Before it, it hadn`t mattered if you were Catholic, Protestant or Orthodox.

And don`t try to make those Cossacks so religious people. They were bandits and renegades, religion mattered nothing to them.

History / Targowice and Bar Confederations [34]

Is it what Russian historians lecture on Polish Russian events????? :):):):):):)

Quite a snug explanation to pacify Russian remorse. Poles started a rebellion, lost Catherine`s trust, and eventually lost their country. :):):):)

I don`t think so. Don`t forget there were other predators waiting for injured Poland to bleed completely to tear her apart. Catherine had to take quick action, otherwise Prussian and Austrian kings would get their share without Russian participation. Such precedence took place at the second partition - only Russia and Prussia organized it, Austria was left behind.

With rebellions or without it, Catherine would have tried to get her share anyway.

History / Targowice and Bar Confederations [34]

Certainly it is not a question of dates and strict sequence of events.

No, in case of Polish events at the time, the dates and sequence are important.

The Bar confederation might create hostility against Poland from the direction of Catherine.

As if the Catherine had been friendly to Poland before. :):):):)
There is no friendship among states, especially in 18 century. Catherine didn`t need any anti-Russian rebellion in Poland to change her attitude to Poland. She was always intent on expanding Russian territory, just waited for a proper moment to do it, and as the Polish state was unable to prevent it, she happily cut it up together with other kings. The partitions would have taken place without any rebellions too.

And what is more, they were against legal king and against reforms. The maximum what they might achiev was a further degradation of Poland as state.

Certainly, the lost campaign weakened Poland. 14 thousands of confederates were captured and sent to Siberia, most never returned.

History / Targowice and Bar Confederations [34]

So, you think that members of Targowice confideration were not polish patriots? May be they were just tricked?

Yes, they were tricked by Russian tsarina. They thought that it was possible to make a deal with Catherine the Great who would stop Polish reforms without further action. They were wrong as Russia and other states eventually decided it was more beneficial for them to carve Poland again in the second partition (1793) which was a catastrophy for the Polish state as it was to lose its historically Polish lands.

After the second partition there was Kosciuszko Insurection which collapsed and the third partition took place.

Targowica is commonly considered by Polish historians an anti-patriotic movement. A common Pole, hearing the word, gets an image of foul traitors. Really nasty ones, who still burn in hell. :):):)

BTW, A lot of them were hanged by an angry mob during riots in Warsaw during Kosciuszko Insurection.

Those who managed to escape, had their portraits hanged instead. Funny.

I just want to express my point of view. No doubts, that members of Targowice confideration were Russian agents, but it were Bar Confiderates who triggered the final partition of Poland.

Bar confederates couldn`t trigger the third partition. Look at the dates. They fought in 1968-1772, while the last partition took place in 1795. I think I wrote about it in my first post here - can`t you read in English? :):):)

I think you are mistaking Bar Confederacy 1768 with Kosciuszko Insurection 1795. Yes? :):):)

I think you need to apply to the moderator to change the title of this thread. :):):):):) When you do it, it will become a historical event, worth putting down in the Forum Chronicles/Annals. :):

History / Targowice and Bar Confederations [34]

Bar Confederacy was organized by patriotic Poles against Russian domination in Poland, among others. Took place 1768-1772. Was one of the pretexts for Russia, Austria and Prussia to divide Poland in the first partition.

Shortly speaking, Targowica was organized by pro-Russian Poles who decided to turn against their Polish King and abolish the reforms which were to strengthen the country at the end of 18 century. Russians invaded, the King gave up after a short campaign and surrendered the army. Poland experienced the 3rd partition and vanished from the map of Europe for 123 years.

Law / Polish tradesmen: Be careful... some may cheat you.. [37]

Im p1ssed to say the least with this last stunt, the moment I look at my fire trying to burn the sh1tty wood i paid good money for the more angry i become.

Man, relax. It might help you to think that in England or States you would have to pay four times as much as you paid in Poland. You may keep the wood, it is still wood, not some false material. After it dries a little, you will still be able to use it for fuel.

So, my advice is: always look at the bright side of life, man! :):):):):):)

Look at this guy: would you like to swap positions with him?

If you wouldn`t, just shut up your mouth and stop crying like a baby! BE A MAN!!!! for gods sake!!!!!!!!

Since your comment. the thread title has been changed.

Yes, it is much better. Thank you. :)
I have dealt with many tradesmen, mechanics, businessmen, professionals in Poland so far. I can roughly estimate: half were decent honest professional guys, a quarter were unprofessional because they lacked experience or skills, and one quarter were conscious cheaters. 50 - 25 -25.

Law / Polish tradesmen: Be careful... some may cheat you.. [37]

The title of the thread is wrong. It should be changed into: Tradesmen are cheating bastards.

Why do you include Poland in it? Some novice member might read it and think that Polish tradesmen are the worst. I know many people duped by American tradesmen/businessmen, the last was one who frauded 50 billion.

Next time you write sth like that - think deeply. :):)

Since your comment. the thread title has been changed.

Travel / Wanted: Photos of Trojmiasto [7]

I'm trying to create a website with tourist information about Trojmiasto.
Does anyone have any snaps they could send that I could use on the site?

I don`t have any my own photos but I am interested in the subject.

I guess your future site will be commercial. What about the copyright? Are you going to buy photos from people? How will you make sure that a given photo is not plagiarised from the Net?

News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

In my opinion those Polish farmers who produce something would be much stronger if there was no donnations ... I support many things in EU but this sysyem should be changed ... it is my private opinion.

Oh, I see. No donations, no subsidies for anybody in EU?

Very well. In that case the process of land consolidation in Poland will be faster. 5 hectar farms will collapse earlier than with subsidies which still help them vegetate.

So, instead of evolution, you propose revolution.

You support ealir pensions for teachers you support donations for farmers ect. You are socialist.

:):):):):)

Who told you I support earlier pensions for teachers? You must have mistaken me with somebody else....

I am not a socialist.

We are part of EU and as I know that this system will be changed in close future

OK.

Are you talking in the name of Polish faremres ?

:):) Hmm, I live in this country and I know farmers` opinions. They are for subsidies, even if they are unequal.

News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

I am "farmer" myself because I have land and I have the cheapest possible health insurance ... but I do something much different for living and I live in Poznań :) other farmer does someting on my land I just take money...

Anny way you have strage attitude...

:):):) Funny what you say about my strange attitude in the light of your earlier revelation. :):):)

and you are wrong when we look on details.

Really? I have an impression it is the opposite.

But don`t worry, it must be my teacher predilection - I just know that I always know the best. :):):):):)
BTW, I have students from rural regions in the classes where I teach. We talk a lot. They don`t think sth is unfair with EU.

So, again, are you talking in the name of Polish farmers?

News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

Anny way in my opinion in terms of develpomlent EU is good for Poland but in this point G. was right.

Unfortunately he isn`t. One of the reasons EU was introduced in Poland was invoking major structural changes in this country. I mean the transformation of Polish peasants into serious farmers. Now there are too many peasants who possess 5 hectars of land and are unable to generate any decent income from it, they are only able to live from hand to mouth, like in 19 century. Thye are primitive and poor, and subsidies won`t help them much.

Polish agriculture must consolidate. 5 hectar farmlands must be gone or better say, they will be incorporated by larger farms run by serious farmers, who know languages and are able to operate on a European scale, not within the perimeter to the nearest fresh produce market where they get shit money.

:):):)

So they are less competitive on common market... Our farmers would be in better situaton without this system is whole EU ... they would be more competitive.

So, you propose that Poland leaves EU. Polish farmers don`t get subsidies. Will you talk to them and explain where they should sell their produce when EU markets are be blocked by high tariffs and duty tax imposed for non-EU countries ???

If you come back alive from the talks, you are a lucky guy... :):):):)They are waiting for you:

I am not negating the fact they get less.
Naturally, it influences the competitiveness of Polish farmers.

But, consider the figures. 1.5 million Polish farmers versus 400.000 in France.

Do you see the difference?

Next. Consider the hypothetical year 2020 when Ukraine joins EU. 1 million subsidised Polish farmers versus 5 million Ukrainian ones. Will you pay more tax to sponsor 5 million newcomers.

Will you cry out about unfair distribution of funds then? Come on, give me a break. :):):):)

Besides, I asked you if you represent Polish farmers.

You don`t.

Look at this chart showing the support for the EU and particularly for agricultural subsidies (the first two columns, country on the left, city on the right)

PS. Good night. I am turning in.

Are you a farmer? Are you a representative of Polish farmers? A delegate? Do you speak on Polish farmers` behalf? :):):)

If not, take a Polish farmer, bring him/her here and let them voice their opinion on EU. What do you think it will be??? :)

Come on, be reasonable. The EU gives subsidies to 400.000 farmers in France and 600.000 in Italy.
To how many in Poland?

1.5 million.

Do you understand now why 1.5 million Polish farmers get less money than 400.000 in France?

Besides, when such countries as Ukraine join EU one day, will you also defend millions of Ukrainian peasants and farmers` right to fair subsidies? I greatly doubt that....

News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

So in fact we paid 2.7 billion and received 4.2 billion... looks like you don't understand what the CAP is.

Maybe. Explain it to me...

All these huge EU subsidies for agriculture sector exist to protect European farmers from cheaper competition from outside of EU. Poland outside of EU wouldn't really need that as costs here are lower and medium tariffs would be enough to protect domestic producers.

Polish farmers won`t need subisidies when out of Union?
OK, again I need to tell you: go and tell it to a Polish farmer. If you come back without a pitched fork in your back, it means you are a lucky guy. :):):)

I see some inconsistency. In a previous quote of yours you said that Polish costs are lower. How does it make Polish farmers less competitive when they get lower subsidies if their costs are lower too? I don`t understand it ....

If there was a real free market of agriculture goods inside of EU without any subsidies and limits of production, which they imposed on us. So saying that we should be happy that they "give us billions for agriculture" is a total nonsense, we would be much better without that stupid system.

:):):) Does it mean we should leave the Union because farmer`s subsidies are unfair?

I disagree. The costs of agricultural production are lower in Poland, that is why the subsidies are lower too. E..g, how much does a Polish farmer pay to a hired worker who picks up strawberries in the farmer`s field? 1 zloty per kilo.

How much is the wage in the West? 0.80 euro = 3 zlotys per kilo.

Nonsense. In Poland ~14% of working population are classified as farmers (often just to have KRUS insurence) and in EU15 countries agriculture is usually making 2-3% of GNP.

Yes, that`s right. I had old data. Sorry.

Christ, what are you talking about ? I've never said that each Polish farmer should get the same money as average farmer in old EU, I'm saying that for the same quantity of goods they should get the same subsidies (and now of course they don't) or else that's unfair competition harming our economy, not any "goodies from EU".

Subsidies are not given for a quantity of goods. They are given for units of arable land.

But if you mention quantity, do you realise that Polish field efficiency in much lower than Western?

"Entitled"... with so huge burocracy and some projects being reject by Eurocrats without any serious reasons,

Proofs?

What did you expect? Paradise right away? :):):)

But that's not the end. We need additional a few thousand burocrats to handel these things and that cost a lot. A few % of these funds are spend on "training and promotion", so "European funds" are spend on teaching people how to use "European funds"...

My advice is: become a teacher then... :):):)

Economically neutral is still OK.
But don`t forget geopolitics and it is even more importnat than economy. Do you ever study the history of Poland? Why did Poland lose all major wars and risings for the past 200 years?

History / The only successful Polish Rising - 1918/19, Wielkopolska [13]

In my opinion three Silesian uprisings (1919, 1920, and 1921) against the German authorities were successful for Poland too.
At least the 1921 insurrection.

Yes, sorry, I forgot about them. Probably because they were on a smaller scale than Wielkopolskie Rising.

IMHO all polish uprisings, not only against Germans were very fruitfull for Poles. All of them contributed alot in Polish self-awareness as europe sufferer.

Yes. I would only correct your last sentence - not as Europe`s sufferer but contributed a lot to raising general Polish awareness.
E.g., in 1830s, there was a danger that Poles would finally adapt to Russian rule, that they will like it as it was. The November Rising of 1830/31 was needed to abolish this national self-complacency, to shatter the opinions and beliefs that it was possible to live under Russian rule. Poles had to start loathing Russia in order to be a free nation again. And Russians, with their persecutions after all Risings, certainly made it easier for Poles.

Without those Risings, Poles would be like Belarussians or East Ukrainians today - Russianised Poles. :):):)

You forgot when you commiebastards crowded the streets in Poland begging for food?

The same things could and can be said about Poles who go the the West, this is the sad truth, did you forget Poles who went to West Berlin to sell vodka and eggs in late 1980s??? . If you are too young to remember these times, listen to the song Berlin Zachodni by Big Cyc.

UK, Ireland / POLISH ADMIRATION FOR THE IRISH GENIUS JAMES JOYCE [63]

I don`t know why.
You wrote:
I never knew that his works had been translated into polish or that Polish people read Irish literature, is it just Joyce?.
Very interesting.

And I answered:

Hey, come on, Poland is a European country. :):):)
Stevenson and Shaw are known and translated. I don`t know about reading, but I had to read them when at uni. As well as Yeats and Beckett.

And later on I wrote:
Poles don`t have such profound knowledge of Irish authors and the Irish ways to promote Irish authors.

What does it all mean?
It means that although all Irish authors are translated and published in Poland because we live in a European country which has contact with the European cultural heritage, yet most people don`t read Irish authors and know nothing about Irish literature in the same way as the Irish know nothing about Polish authors and literature, except for a few passionate fans of Polish stuff.

Does it make sense?

I love Enya and Clannad. But you are wrong. They aren`t Irish. They are Celtic!!!

What are you trying to say?

???? Nothing special. What do you suppose I was trying to say? Certainly nothing to diminish the Irish...

Life / Dog's life or what to expect when living in Poland with a dog [22]

I've never even heard of some of these breeds. I looked them up. The akbash dog looks like a polar bear.

Reminds me of our Polish Podhalański shepherd dog.

Akbash

Podhalański

i always pick up after my dog bk home if u didn't ppl would come out of there houses and follow u giving u abuse about it. its not nice when u see so much of it here in poland

In POland nobody will go after you, let alone abuse you in any way.

Isn`t Poland a much better place to live with your dogs? :):):):)
