Life / do they have GAP shops in POland ? [15]

look into GAP's treatment of their labour- after reading up on it I decided to NEVER buy anything connected with GAP, Old Navy or Banana Republic. Those sneaky c*nts even found a way to not honour that Employees Rights bill they drew up.

If I am not abreast on the latest development then someone please correct me, but until I hear otherwise i can only encourage others to BOYCOTT GAP. They profit far too much and treat their employees as virtual slaves. It's just sad.

I agree with this, they have unethical work policies and employ cheap labour from Central America.. of course they arent the only ones... but at least the others such as Primark reflect this in the cheap prices. In my opinion, GAP is not only unethical, but offers unoriginal clothing at inflated prices for the quality.

UK, Ireland / What's So Great About The UK? [416]

- Do the recent Polish arrivals also have the right to 'be there,' or not? E.g. those who, according to you, 'have already infiltrated Birmingham, they are driving the buses and everything [SIC] and there is even a Polish food shop in my small home town now'?

well in my opinion they do, yes - but clearly I am biased since I am shacked up with one of em. The above comment about infiltration etc. was meant to be taken in a humourous kind of way.. sorry if that didnt come across.

UK, Ireland / What's So Great About The UK? [416]

In September 2006 I went to find my Dad's childhood home in Sparkhill, Birmingham. At best I would say it is now a ghetto mainly populated by muslims. I'm not saying anyone was forced to move away, but that seems to have been the result.

That area has been populated by Asians for many many years and the majority of the younger generations were born and bred in Birmingham, so they have as much right to be there as anyone. If people choose to move house because they are xenophobic, then that is by choice, not by force. I was born and bred in the Midlands and am proud to say that I grew up in a multi-cultural society, which has made me the person I am today.

UK, Ireland / London, not my cup of tea [30]

Im scared of moving out too, but the property prices are forcing me out. I think most people who live or lived here have a love/hate relationship with it. It is without doubt a fantastic city, but it can be hard to live here too.

Gosh, that's a big step to take. Good luck with it :)

thank you. Not so big a step since I was thinking about the Midlands and thats where I come from originally. However, the Poles have already infiltrated Birmingham, they are driving the buses and everything and there is even a Polish food shop in my small home town now.. so I may have to rethink.. where do you live again LIR? :)

UK, Ireland / Rules on Car Tax on Polish vehicle in UK [20]

thanks for your replies. Well I have been told by the tax authorities that its 6 months.. but I didnt know you had to change the plates. I have to admit I am quite ignorant about car matters since I dont drive, so Im just trying to find out on his behalf. Has anyone here experience of this?

UK, Ireland / Rules on Car Tax on Polish vehicle in UK [20]

My partner has just brought his car to the UK from Poland. It is taxed and insured in Poland and as far as I understand it can remain in the UK for 6 months without having to get UK tax/insurance. However, this seems only to be the case if you are a temporary resident, which he isn't really. Also, after this 6 months, can you just take it over the border and then bring it back or do you have to wait some time before re-entry? Can anyone offer any advice on this issue? Obviously we dont want to pay for car tax twice.

UK, Ireland / What's So Great About The UK? [416]

Personally, I dislike the mentality in London (and I am a Londoner) but I live in Yorkshire. The cost of living is a lot less in cities like Leeds, Sheffield and York (and York is very typically English, if you're looking for that romanticised view of England!). At least compared to London. Maybe it would be beneficial to you to look at other areas of the UK, that doesn't have such an established Polish community.

dont tell everyone! I doubt there will be many areas without an established Polish community soon. Poles are now officially the 3rd largest immigrant group in Britain (the others being the Irish and the Pakistanis). Anyway, having lived in London for many years I have also decided to move further North.. mainly in order to have a better chance of getting on the property market, as there is zero chance in London and for my partner to have a better chance of getting decent work with less competition.

Can anyone spare a thought for those English people who financially support Polish partners?

UK, Ireland / British throwing food to trashes... [26]

There are some restrictions at airports, but in reality I dont know of anyone who has food confiscated, or is this a very new thing? My partner always brings loads of fresh food back and we certainly dont throw it away.

UK, Ireland / Locations of Polish food and drink places in London [12]

there are masses of Polish shops all over London now, seemingly a new one springs up every week. London is a big place, so it depends where you are located, but probably the ones already mentioned are best for you. If you happen to be in North London you will find shops in Stoke Newington, Holloway, Camden, Dalston, Wood Green etc....most of them also do home cooked deli type food and cakes, bread etc... also Sainsburys, Morrisons and Costcutter all now do limited Polish ranges.

Love / why wont he communicate? going crazy [90]

im sorry to read this, but your name is Okay.. and I know you will be okay and eventually find someone who deserves you. Even if what you had together was good, his silence is unforgivable (unless he is dead) and you know in your heart that its over. Whatever you do, dont go looking for him in Poland, I dont think it will make you happy. It is hard to get over this without proper closure, but you need to just write it off in your mind and tell yourself that actually you are the one who is not going to waste time waiting around for him to contact you and you are going to get on and enjoy life.

Love / why wont he communicate? going crazy [90]

whatever the reason may be, it is unforgivable of him not to respond to your calls and be honest with you. Could it be that he has lost his mobile and the Polish number is wrong? do you have an email address for him? However, even this had happened if he really loves you he would have called you. Hard as it is, please try to keep your self respect and dont contact him again. If there is a genuine reason then he will contact you, but the more you contact him and he doesnt respond, the harder it is. It sounds like he is a coward who cannot face telling you the truth. Sorry and good luck.

UK, Ireland / Polish citizen working as British/Irish policeman? [9]

they can apply in the UK and in some areas the police are actively recruiting certain nationalities such as Polish (e.g.) in London. The applicant needs to have been living in the UK for a minimum number of years (I think it is between 3 and 5, but check). They must also be fluent in written and spoken English. I know this because my partner thought about applying recently, but his written English wasnt good enough.

UK, Ireland / An Englishman's View on Polish flocking to the UK [53]

so when are you moving to Poland Sapphire ??

I would like to believe me, but my partner doesnt want to go back at the moment and it would be impossible for me to find a job in my line of work there, which means rethinking my career options. never say never though.

UK, Ireland / An Englishman's View on Polish flocking to the UK [53]

The pub I drink in is a WetherSpoons and is very cheap...

and that my friend is the answer to many more threads.. such as where can I meet a Polish man? check out your local Wetherspoons and you wont be disappointed.

Living in London, there are very many Poles, as well as a mixed bag of other nationalities so I think its not as noticable as it might be in smaller towns. I can imagine that the sudden influx of so many immigrants in a place where it hasnt happened much before, could be threatening to many. I was only joking about Brits emigrating...but there must be plenty of space for us in Poland now :)

UK, Ireland / Bringing meat from Poland to the uk - is it allowed? [6]

thats a bit dismissive isnt it. There are plenty of different types of meat and who is to say that it is better in one country than another.. its merely a question of taste. My partner always brings back lots of sausages and cooked meats from Poland, which are fantastic.

USA, Canada / VISA TRAVEL TO USA [32]

ok thanks for your comments.. reading this thread has made me realise that I need to give it some thought and not just go ahead and book a ticket, without checking out the visa situation first. It should be OK I reckon, he has been living here for 6 years but doesnt have citizenship.
