Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

Ach, Dundonians aren't that bad. Not that good either mind you ;)

No homework, true. How much longer are you gonna stick with Callan, delphi?

History / Roman Dmowski- Polish Adolf Hitler? [219]

These are ideas from an essay I wrote 14 years ago now, LOL. In my first year at Uni. Showing my age here. I can't imagine myself with grey hair.

Actually, the author of the 4-part treatise was American. A guy called Joel Feinberg. Sounds Jewish to me. Deep but an enjoyable read. All about the multifarious nature of the harm concept.

Hitler was a total racist. If one person pursues the creation of one unique race at the detriment of all others, and kills them, then he is a racist.

I agree here, yehudi. The skinheads in Poland, those that like NS music, need to get a grip.

Life / Homosexuals in Poland / Hands off (PETITION) [797]

Randal is just a Bible-basher who has no clue about any issues. I wonder what he knows about AIDS. Probably nothing.

Randal, why do some men have homosexual urges and feelings? Is it because they want to be different or simply because they are different?

News / Germany seeks extadition of Sobibor death camp guard. [65]

Hairball raised the issue of territorial jurisdiction. I had a classic example at university. If a Swede kills a Bulgar in Mexico, which court should try him?

Sokrates has a point in that Israel cleverly masks its paedophile rings and killers. They are very suit me suit me.

Jola wrote that no Jews can be war criminals. Well, there may be a point there too.

Sums it up nicely, Sledz. He is likely close to death now so why punish him? A classic case of 'too little, too late'.

The man was a bastard but leave him alone now. The chance was missed.

Harry is absolutely spot on here. The difference needs to be drawn between the modern regime and the old ones. The pendulum has swung in favour of a highly protectionist position. The express policy of the Knesset Kadima party has been to, at all costs, avoid capture. Look at the hoo-haa at the moment over Shalit. They all want him back and they aren't gonna budge until his safe return has been ensured.

However, this has also explained the acts of cowardice of the IDF. Harry, you must agree in your heart of hearts. They'd rather spill Palestinian blood by sloppy and reckless killing than sacrifice Israeli life through capture. The Shin Bet runs the risk of capture on the ground. Hamas are being tipped off left, right and centre and this is a fact. There are informants and whistle-blowers everywhere.

Harry is also right about what is called declinature. This postulates that a judge cannot hear a case that he has a vested interest in. Regardless of the merits of the legal system in question, an emotional involvement is simply not gonna constitute sth fair. Impartiality must be sought to the maximum extent possible lest we run the risk of erroneous outcomes.

Language / łem = past and będę = future? [18]

From the hooves, ;)

I really see no difference in the forms. Then again, my Polish is not good enough to appreciate the subtle nuances in linguistic forms, despite what Poles say about my level.

Language / Du ju spik polisz? [21]

For an even higher level of obscurity, LOL. It would seem to border on snooty elitism.

I learned that education and job training are 2 fundamentally different things. Teacher training, in all its manifest forms, equips you in a different way for plying your trade.

You are really getting a handle on things, Osioł. You're a smart cookie!

Będziemy jedli is my favourite. I love eating :)

Language / łem = past and będę = future? [18]

Będę robił is 'I will be doing' whereas będę to zrobił is 'I will do that'. Będę robić is both I think.

It all depends on context, Osioł. It does my napper in too.

I'll wait for the heavyweights to step in. Tbh, it isn't entirely clear water at my end either.

Language / łem = past and będę = future? [18]

Będę jadł is an older form than the infinitive, that's the only meaningful difference I can see. If you are unsure, the infinitive is the neutral option

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, Osioł

The point, in most cases, is that they want a magic wand, a shortcut to fluent English. I find it a joke how they feel that they aren't making headway. They often don't know what they want.

That's why they buy into stuff like Callan. 4 times faster, LOL. Yeah, 4 times the level of BS.

Language / łem = past and będę = future? [18]

Osioł, do you mean będę jadł (m), I will eat? Będę jadła (f) You can use the infinitive too, co bedziesz jeść? (what will you eat?)

I agree with Filios, I wasn't sure what you wanted to say. Please ask

How naive in part, Mr Bubbles. For one, dialect shouldn't enter the equation when discussing most methods. It is a matter for a conversation class, nothing else.

Accent, that's another question. Sorry, I don't know of any methods that beg imitation of the students. It is their choice if they choose to imitate their teacher. Invariably, they go with their own accent which is how it should be. Secondly, they have to get used to the accents. We don't use our God-given accent to baffle them you know. This is just life. Native speakers often have trouble with one another's accents, don't lose sight of that fact.

Please don't border on selectivism. Accents are often just an aside, provided they are understandable it's ok. Why should a Londoner get a job ahead of sb from Dundee based on their accent? Their teaching is more important than their accent.

True. Given that Polish is the L1 here, outside of class, many Poles don't have much opportunity to practise it on the streets.

You are quite likely to run into dialectal speech in the UK

Hiding behind books is never the way forward. Spending some time in amongst people is the best way.

Truth be told, much English teaching here is McDonalds English designed to make money. They don't appreciate the diversity of English.

How now brown cow was somehow taken as racist by some, LOL.

They are out of touch with Use of English. They are stuck in their dated books.

I can only imagine. It borders on the absurd. It's all practice for the students. Go to Scotland and they are not gonna neutralise their accents just to accommodate foreigners.

I don't get on with many Polish teachers of English. I want to observe some. I was an observer and would like to formally observe them.
