Seanus, the whole Georgian war has some similarities with the Yugoslav Civil War: parts of Georgia want to become independed, Georgia enters with a big army and tries to shut it down. Unfortunately for Georgia, they have a kinda big neighbour who's not really friendly and is in support of the seperatists' parts. There you go, trouble :) If the EU had been more decisive in the Yugoslav Civil War, then it wouldn't have come to such a mess. But the EU showed its indecisiveness pretty obviously during that war.

Russians always annoy me a bit with their "solutions" - it's nearly always a violent one. The school in (was it Ingusetia?), that theatre in Moskau...Always so much violence and always it's the innocent that get slaughtered. Bah!

I'm sure you have taken the timeframe in mind with this? Remember that at the "Peace In Our Time" statement, it wasn't at all clear what Hitler had in mind. Only 18 months later this became clear. And the atrocities were not to be known until even longer after that. In hindsight it's always easy to condemn and say what shouldn't have been done, but you would be filthy rich if you knew everything upfront. Heck, even the Jews themselves didn't believe in 1942 that they were going to be exterminated in Concentration Camps. Why? In the North of Holland they have a thing called "swientie tikken" (lit: Swine ticking). The let a couple of pig run wild in a field full of mud and two or more contestants try to touch all of those porkers. The one who has done so the first is the winner. The contestants are allow to hinder the others in reaching their goals where pssbl. If you successfully hinder somebody from touching a swine, you get one point awarded, so you will have less hogs to touch, yet the one stopped gets one point deducted. Matches can last for an entire afternoon.

Another one is "farmers lotto". A clean field is divided in -I think 100- squares and they let cows run free on it. Ppl make bets in which square a cow will sh*t. For the rest it's the same as a lottery.

Edit: there is another one, but that's not a sport and a bit cruel as well. Since cows sleep standing up, some ppl make it a competition to push as many cows over as pssbl. You can actually quite easily push a cow over at night and it literally falls down on its side when you push them while they sleep standing. The cows will survive, they just get startled, but nevertheless I think this is a bit cruel to do.

Close to where I used to live in NL, there is a vineyard of a decent size which actually started to produce wine on a moderate scale a few years back. I sampled some of it and it wasn't even bad. And if that is pssbl in NL, which is on the same equation as PL, then it most definitively should be pssbl over there, given the fact that you can plant them there on the southside of mountains, a phenomenae we don't even have and it still grows.

Are these rights denied to them or is it simply because they are not interested? That's actually a very good point, Softsong, the Germans in Silesia were caught between a rock and a hard place. But as usual resentment rides high in post war days and mistakes do happen. I think in the first place they felt Silesian. Maybe you want to compare the treatment of Japanese ppl in the US after Pearl Harbor.

Another thing is: ppl nowadays are so quick to condemn the contemporaries of supporting Hitler, but you have to place yourself into the mindframe of the times: there you have the actual choice of a life of unemployment, misery, poverty and you have a guy who promises work, a strong nation, no more poverty and misery. Ok, he may have some crazy sh*t he is talking about, but ah well, that's just rethorics, the soup probably isn't eaten as hot as it's served, he won't do that anyway. So what do you do if you are faced with these choices. From hindsight it's always easier to say that you would prefer poverty, but that would make you a liar as I think that the choice would be obvious. Not that I condone these choices, but I do understand why ppl chose for Hitler. It's not for nothing that NEARLY EVERY country (except perhaps the USSR) looked upon Germany in the 1930's with admiration and kinda wished they were able to do the same. Yes, that goes for Poland too.

Don't be confused. I will tell you what my viewpoint is on the Lwow issue: first of all, if Poland were to retrieve Lwow back, it would create a dangerous precendent: what if other countries, notably Germany, would say: hey, if those Poles get Lemberg back, then we want Breslau and Posen back! With all it's consequences.

Secondly, I would wish that the Poles were happy with what they have right now instead of lamenting about the past: a beautiful country with all variations in nature, a couple of great cities and so on.

Thirdly: the Ukraine is a sovereign country. You can't just go and say: hey, that city used to be ours, we want it back and if you don't give it to us, we will take it from you! You have any idea what the consequences of that might be?

And finally: I just repeat what my good (Jewish) grandmother used to say when asked if she felt resentment towards the Germand for killing her family: learn from the past, enjoy today and look forward to a bright future. It's better to forgive and never forget than it is to forget and never to forgive. She was a very wise woman, my grandmother. Too bad she died way too young.

I wouldn't call them "Nazis", slo, although some of the participants tend to lean in that direction. I'd prefer to call some of the participants "Revisionists". It's a little more subtle label and although I think Revisionists are just as despicable, there's nothing you can do about these ppl, unfortunately. Just remember one thing: if you base your views on historical facts, it doesn't make those views less disgusting.

Anyhow, this discussion is only useful as an opportunity to explore the transferring of groups of ppl from one area to the other and all of it's consequences, methods et al, as everybody knows Lwów, Lviv, Lemberg, Leopolis is Ukrainian now and will never be Polish again. It doesn't matter if it used to be Polish. And besides, the fact that it was Polish is just a footnote in the greater context of history and for the worldstage of past eras it's not really relevant or interesting to know that it was. You might wanna start a thread about the fact that Vilnius used to be Polish too. Or the Finnish-Russian "Winter-War" of 1939-1940. Or the Polish - Ukrainian wars in the Post WW1-period.

I was in London for three months while I was at University. I went through the Erasmus program and followed a course "Film and the First World War" at the University of London and had a place in the Crescent near Regent's Park. I loved London - especially the museums, I loved the pub-culture (which was back then something completely different than what I was used to in Amsterdam or elsewhere in NL!) , I loved the many monuments and the fact that they took such good care of the city. I compared it to Amsterdam and in A'dam they didn't spend as much attention to details as they did in London. I spend a few weekends with friends in the country and I loved it too. Ppl were friendly (and as usual they all love the Dutch) and I liked the women back there. They spreaded a bit more than just welcoming warmth :)))

In all I do like London and the country side of England. Later on I've been to other towns and I must say that I do not like Birmingham. It's supposed to be the 2nd city in England and there is absolutely nothing to do, at least not the times that I was there.

But my g/f is German, I have plenty of German friends, but I guess I am smarter than you, I have learned to forgive them for what happened in the past. Even my grandparents, although they never talked to the Germans again, learned their children that it's better to forgive (and never forget of course) than to resort to the same practices they did. And my grandfather was the sole survivor of his entire family. He never laid a hand on any German as he claimed it wouldn't bring his family back.
