Life / Is it possible to have a NIP without PESEL? [16]

Oh yeah. The only exception was in a tax office would you believe? The woman was top class, very helpful and friendly. Still, every cloud has a silver lining.

Buggered if I know. Nah, just kidding: britishinpoland.com/blog/2008/08/how-to-get-a-pesel, if you have any questions about this, dt, I'd be happy to answer them. Much ado about nothing really.

I had a 3 months registration and it wasn't an issue. However, I got it extended in 2007 til the end of 2012 so the 5-year registration thing kicked in. And that was that. It's sth I only use in public offices.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

There are preferred groups, that's for sure. This alone has a major bearing on how they judge you. You can be a super teacher but if you don't click with the group, they won't rate you. I was no great shakes despite what other teachers said. I just got on well with most groups and did what I was contracted to do.

Not entirely correct, dt. Yes, you can have a NIP without a PESEL. This was the case for me for some time. However, I was encouraged to get a PESEL and did so. I'm not from Poland as you know.

The PESEL is like a unique number which identifies you.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

Very good point, dt. Right on the money actually. I did a demo office hour for one of the up and coming teachers. He was a natural in the higher levels but struggled with the lower-level classes. I showed him that, in order to maintain interest and involvement, a little Polish is necessary. I got by well without it but it really helped keep the punch and flow in the lesson.

This nonsense of total immersion is pie-in-the-sky stuff. I used Japanese for 7C students in Japan (the lowest level). Had I not, there would have been awkward silences and head beating against the nearest wall. The same here in Poland. Screw what these experts say, I feel a classroom better than most and form my own views. Ain't no 'expert' gonna espouse their BS with me.

Work / ADVICE: Teaching English in Poland, will I get hired [21]

The telephone interview was short and I heard quickly. I think you have the wrong end of the stick about CELTA. Having CELTA doesn't mean you can't teach kids. I have taught kids here and have it.

I agree, it was shambolic. They tried to make it such a professional thing. When I won my framed certificate for Best Teacher in Nov 2006, I accepted it but thought nothing of it. They circled way too quickly and I told them that they were not to finish it in less than 10 mins. What a farce it was! Hardly the crowning moment of glory in my career :(

News / Poland..wake up to a multicultural world [1059]

Nothing more natural than not associating with foreign people, I disagree with that. Yeah, birds of a feather flock together n'all but still, there are more natural things. Placing people doesn't really happen. You know, some countries have benefitted from such selective placements. For example, Sweden back in the 1970's. They drafted blacks in on purpose and they served a useful function.

Work / ADVICE: Teaching English in Poland, will I get hired [21]

It's not like in Japan where applicants should, in most cases, be in the country. Just look at gaijinpot.com to verify that. You might just need a phone interview as I had to get my first post in Poland. Try contacting them delivery and certainly fire your CV off. It may well turn out to be more than a specualtive application.

Love / Should I Be Nervous About Going to Poland? Black female dating a Pole. [158]

This has a fair bit of truth in it, lukimp. Some liberals are really holier-than-thou types who don't practise what they preach. I keep going back to it but like John Lennon singing about imagining no possessions from his white mansion, replete with all manner of material goodies.

The world doesn't revolve around catering for racists though. As Dave Gilmour sang in 'On the Turning Away', it's "just a world that we all must share". Provided that they don't harm you, I don't see a problem.

Aha, gotcha. No, I think there should be a different criteria sheet. Poles have to be very confident to be dynamic. I don't think it's so fair to judge them on the same criteria.

Life / What should Poland and Poles do, after first day of nuclear war? [133]

Brotherhood is the way that a Scot would look at it so please forgive me. Unique as it may be, it isn't afforded that status by many. Maybe you are thinking too much about bruderschaft in the German interpretation.

Crow, the Slavic community has had chances at solidarity and have blown them. Letting NATO bomb Serbia was one thing but letting Kosovo go???? Only cowards wouldn't have contested that more vigorously!!

An emerging power, LOL. Tusk doesn't even have the power to block puny vetoes, hehehe. Tweedledum and Tweedledee would be better off in the circus. I could just imagine the musing over how to fire a nuke. 'You do it', 'no, you do it', 'come on, give it a try', 'what does it do again?' ;)

UK, Ireland / Poles claim UK benefits after working only one year instead of going home [156]

That's cool, Lir. I'm not gonna lower it and say that even I haven't met most Scottish people from having lived there for 25 years. Wind ups are healthy and needed. People make a living off of them :)

Back to the thread, it's expensive to go home for some Poles and they'd rather live cheaply in a foreign country which offers more choices as the UK usually does. Most live very modest lifestyles.

Prima facie, yes Crow. However, politics makes for some strange bedfellows and it was more of a feeling of Slavic brotherhood rather than political expediency to intervene. Please tell me Crow, what was the justification given for this theft of Kosovo? Most people agree that 'Kosovo je Srbija'. Why has the Serbian reaction been so muted and low-key? The Scots would be up in arms and fighting to the last.

News / Poles and bogus marriage [6]

youtube.com/watch?v=7YNiedDhsAs, here's to you, Chevalier :)

I wouldn't put it past some people, such is the desire to secure entry. So many fast ones are pulled these days.

Enjoy the video my friend. The Marx Brothers are great.
