British Government keeps work restrictions for eastern Europeans

Strict working restrictions for Eastern Europeans will not be scrapped, the Government announced today.

The Worker Registration Scheme enables the Government to monitor the work A8 nationals do, and where in the country they do it - and so better plan for local services and ensure migration is working for the British labour market and the country as a whole.

Maintaining the restrictions also means A8 nationals will not have full access to benefits until they have been working and paying tax for at least 12 consecutive months.

From the OP's link:

Border and Immigration Minister Phil Woolas said:

"Migration only works if it benefits the British people, and we are determined to make sure that is what happens.

"That is why I am delighted to announce that we are keeping in place restrictions which mean we can continue to count how many people are coming here, and which limit Eastern Europeans' access to benefits."

I thought we were always being spun the line that they had no idea how many people were coming and going and that there were no real figures to say how many EU immigrants were here and any one time.

I wish that they would make up their minds.

I think it is pretty ironic that the powers that be think their rules are "strict" !

They have to be seen to be taking a stand and placating certain people who may switch allegiance to the BNP. I don't imagine the controls are that tight at all. I see that Labour changed its slogan to snub the BNP. Well, slogans are slogans but substance is what you are ultimately judged on.

its all about keeping 12 months restrictions in registration scheme (obligation to register in WRS), not in restrictions to work .

Exactly and the UK immigration policy has no substance as there was no upper limit placed on EU migration.

With now less than a year to go before the next General Election, it will be interesting to see how the mainstream parties jostle for position as the one having the most "responsible and in no way racist" policy on immigration.

Capping is not an alien concept in Europe. Farming quotas for example. Practically, it's hard to operate but manageable with concerted effort. However, such commitment evidently wasn't there.

Now we'll see another expensive campaign of platitudes and the hyperbole of 'success'.

Well there are too many foreigners in the U.K, Poles, Lithuanians, Pakis, Indians, Blacks, if these numbers came to America it would be hardly noticed but U.K is the size of Poland 3 or 4 million foreigners is alot. I hope the government isn't focusing this on Poles, at least we're Europeans, if anyone should leave it's them darkies. America's got a problem with Mexicans and other Latinos, when i first came here in 1990 i never sean one in Pennsylvania, now they're all over the place even in Polish neighborhoods, some date Polish girls, in the job market before they only did landscaping, now roofing, painting, masonry, tiles, drywall, plumbing, electrical, roads, sanitation, everything. So i know how the British feel, i sure as hell wouldn't want that in Poland. Thank god i still got my Polish passport if it gets worse i'm just gonna go back to Europe.

The British should have put their act together and come out with real working and sound imigration policy and stop focusing on foreigners as a sole reason of everyday dificulties for british workmen.

poiting finger at Poles for shortages of healthcare system, social benefits, weather and so on ..... not to forget about stealing jobs, women/men , spiting on the steets, speaking foreign lingo, and last but not least there simply too many of them as this country is overcrowded already.

Art of looking for scagoat have been know for centures.
It easy !

And get rid of curry culture?

Yep, we could keep the Italian and the Spanish and the French and the Greek...(I like mediteranian food ;0) )

Controlled immigration is a good thing, mass immigration of ANY kind is a bad thing, illegal immigration should be stamped out and failed assylum seekers should be removed before they start to procreate and demand passports for their off-spring born here!

Feta salad for the lady over there named Shelley.

Yeah, there has to be some kind of control system in place. You can't leave things to trust and prayers.

I agree with You there - now what should be done?

You tell me what I can do as an individual? And they are not just my frustrations, I can safely say I am in a growing majority who feel that this country is going down the pan and uncontrolled immigration and abuse of assylum has gone too far.

Well You have answered your own question if there is majority who think the some as you do, why dont you all get together and start control your own government?

I agree with you, but we're also been sent down the pan by 'our own'.

Walk down pretty much any High Street anywhere and see the slack-jawed, chain-smoking miseries in tracksuits, with their broods of kids, going in and out of Poundland and MacDonalds, which they're dragging up on benefits.

Yes, there is a big problem with immigration in the UK, but it's not the only problem that is being ignored by the Government.

Nothing like a bit of, uh, what's that character that George Dawes plays in Little Britain? Vickie Pollard, right?
Mister H 11 | 761

I think you mean Matt Lucas, but you're right, Britain is awash with Vicky Pollard types and it tends to be people like this (unemployed, unemployable dregs of society) that probably complain the most about foreigners.

It's cretins like this that people think of when they think of the British. We need a good dollop of ethinic-cleansing, starting with all those families with the worst reputations on the worst estates !

Matt Lucas, that's it, thanks. Yeah, tinkers will be tinkers but not everyone can reach the higher echelons of society. They are realistic about things at least.
