WW2: Britain Declares War on Germany to Save Poland

On September 1, 1939 German troops swarmed across the Polish border and unleashed the first Blitzkrieg the world had seen. Hitler had been planning his attack since March - ever since German troops occupied the remainder of Czechoslovakia. The Poles suspected as much and readied their defenses. Unfortunately the Poles based their defensive strategy on the experiences of World War I. Mobility was crucial - mobility provided by cavalry troops the Poles considered the best in the world. Indeed, their horsemen were probably the world's best - but horses offered little defense against tanks.

What except sending an ultimatum to Hitler did British government do to help Poland?

One could say that we were good with horses but British were even better with sending ultimatums.

That article fails to mention two crucial points:

1. Poland was barely 20 years old, after 120+ years of occupation by 3 countries.

2.Chamberlain warned Poland not to modernize their forces (or the military pact between UK and Poland would be off) because that would send "the wrong signal" to Hitler. Chamberlain did that even though Poles by then had sufficient evidence that Germans would in fact attack Poland. The evidence was obtained thanks to Polish Enigma code brakers, the same Enigma that Brits would later try to claim the sole credit for breaking it.

123y

ultimatums are like farts in the wind if you don't back up your words with some action and unfortunately the brits must have had some beans just before that.

I think its blatantly obvious that we (BRITISH) didnt want to go to war at that time. However we did step up to the plate when need be.

After Hitler conquored France his aim turned towards Britian had he won the battle of the air he would have invaded us and who knows what would have happened after that. As it was our superior Navy power and air force forefronted by the Spitfire and Hurricane somewhat spolied his plans. As a result he then made up some story of the whole battle being a big disguise for the real battle which was operation barbarossa " the invasion of Russia ".

Thats it folks.

Yes...but i don't think he (noimmigration) knows much about history, and respect for those who fought for Europe.
It's a chance, most Brits are not like you.

A lot of Polish pilots died helping you.

Helping you, helping you actually and avenging their loved ones. The Poles fighting for England actually started shooting down German pilots after they had bailed out. Then the Germans obviously started shooting down allied Pilots after they had bailed out.

A lot of Polish pilots died helping you.

Ok Helping us in what way??

Polish Pilots were helping themselves and avenging their loved ones. At the time we could use the pilots nothing else.

Helping us PLEASE!!

They fought along the other allies ?? Of course they wanted to avenge their country ! What would you do if you were in their case ?? Your country has been attacked, your people has been killed, your cities destroyed, etc. Isn't it a human feeling ? But the fact is that they helped. I even saw a Dutch poster who said "thank you Poles" because Polish soldiers freed their city...And what about the D-day ? Poles were there too, don't forget that !

German dominated Sudetenland area of Czechoslovakia into the German Third Reich in 1938. In March of the next year he occupied the remainder of Czechoslovakia

Bolstered by the lack of a forceful response by Britain or France, Hitler set his sights on Poland. However, British Prime Minister Chamberlain had come to the realization that Hitler's territorial ambitions could not be tempered by submitting to his demands. In March 1939 he declared that Britain guaranteed Poland's independence and vowed to come to her aid if attacked. France soon joined Britain in support of Poland.

The assault was originally scheduled to begin in the early morning hours of August 26th. However, on August 25th, Britain announced that her guarantee of Polish independence had been formalized by an alliance between the two countries. Hitler wavered and postponed his attack to September 1.

- Where did you take this info from, mate? What books? Please, share the titles and authors' names with me. Thanks in advance. So the Poles are to blame for the German shootings down of 'allied Plots' (sic)? Wow, I didn't know that one. What else are the Poles to be blamed for? Please, enlighten me.

:)
PS. What is your nationality, if I may know? May I show your your posts (translated by me) on some Polish-language websites? I hope you don't mind it? You can be famous, you know. ;)

- Well, I am not your friend in the first place, and I'm not Russian either. You're confusing me with somebody else.

Oh, so you've got Russian friends?

- But he hasn't fooled us, has he? Greetings to you, man.
:)

It's a ''nice' exchange here, anyways. The ageless topic - did the Brits help Poles, or not? - The (based on facts) aswer is: yes, they did the best they could do in the given circumstances. Britain could not send her army to Poland, but she loyally declared war on Germany and stuck up to it. And, repeating after George Orwell: it's good that Britain didn't join Hitler, but stepped out against Nazi Germany.
