A Polish dish made by special pasta. They have pasta squares, cut up bacon and, of course, cabbage. It's all mixed together. They use ziele angielski and liść laurowej. Bay leaves and English pepperballs. It's very tasty, take my word 4 it

How special is that pasta? Would I be able to buy it in one of those Polski Skleps scattered around the city? And: is there any dish where they don't use cabbage? :)

dear guest, please promise me that you won't get stuck on McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut. Poland has a wonderful quisine of its own, so if you only want to eat from the above three, rather stay where you are ... ;) absolutely no offense meant - just please don't be afraid to explore Polish food :)

Actually there has been a Hard Rock Cafe and Burger King at Zlote Terasy in Warsaw for nearly a year now.

Chain stuff like McDonald's tastes the same in most countries because they have tight rules on ingredients.

The Mexican food here however is horrid...nothing like real Mexican OR USA style Tex Mex. Also I have not had a decent 'pub burger' anywhere in Poland. Lousiana, Champions's, Chicago...all have nasty burgers. Chicago's was the worst and I couldn't even finish it.

Poland has some tasty local dishes but nothing I like all the time and it is not the place to go if you want variety and quality in food.

Have you tried Warsaw Tortilla Factory? It's "nouvelle Tex-Mex", but neither I nor anyone I've talked to has ever complained about it.

I heard that it is Polish custom for topping pizza with ketchup as opposed to tomato sauce. Not surprising, since many other countries follow the same guidelines and use varying condiments. The most popular condiment in China, for example, is Thousand Island dressing! (ewww)

I'm personally not a fan of ANY fast food chains developed here in the U.S. and spread (unfortunately) throughout the world. Strictly a purist when it comes to enjoying the local fare of a particular country or region.

Yeah it's the closest I can get to edible but still not the real thing. It has to be the ingredients because the preparation of this kind of food doesn't take much skill.

I have taught English as a volunteer in elementary schools in eastern Poland. At this level, no meal is served at school. Children eat breakfast at home, bring second breakfast in their backpack, and eat obiad in the middle of the afternoon after they return home. Certainly this can be different in other places in Poland or at higher levels of school, but this is what I've observed.

No they just put ketchup on the pizza that already contains tomato sauce I believe.

Of course Poland has McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut etc....These are multinational corporations!

one of my friends always laughs at me for making "sandwiches" out of potato waffles, bacon and HP Sauce.

It's some weird Polish thing, obviously. :)

Well, I like them, and that's what counts innit! I don't laugh at her bloody peanut butter sandwiches and cold pizza breakfasts, do I???

what the heck is *what*? HP Sauce?

It's a great sauce made in Birmingham, UK (or at least it used to be; it's probably made in Shanghai now though, lol). I expect you Americans would probably call it "brown sauce" or something <yawn> haha

McD's has spread its wings everywhere, even in smaller cities. In Tychy, there are 2 or even 3. I worked in a city of 88,000 in Japan and there was one there too.

HP Sauce above, advertised by Frank Bruno back in the day. Poor Frank, he went off the rails. Lee&Perrins is from Birmingham too, Heinz make a good Worcestershire sauce.

Pizza Hut relies on its name. I liked eating there but there are so many good pizzerias in Poland. Here in Gliwice, there is Da Grasso, Telepizza, Bombola, Fantastico and Dominium to name but a few. Many small locally-owned businesses have popped up too and they are well worth scoping out.

For anyone who says that the quality of pizza in Poland is poor, they are being overly critical. A big pizza represents great value

On the subject of McD's in Poland, who the hell ever gave planning permission for the branch on Florianska, Krakow.... just in front of the Barbikan? Hideous :(

Pizza Hut - last time I ate there, I was 10 years old. There is really nothing appealing about those places... all bright red plastic decor and oily pizza and bland salad... no thanks.

I really wish that pierogie would take off in London... like a "pret a pierogi" or a Polish version of Leon (which is currently taking over London).

I ran out of HP Sauce, so I had to have Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce on my potato waffles today. And very nice it was too. :)

One of my exes is from Birmingham, but I wouldn't want her for breakfast LOL.

Actually, while we're on the subject, shall we turn this into a Birmingham thread? Anyone for faggits and pays? afta which we can get the buzz to the pub for some Brewy Leven, eh bab? lol ;)

"pret a pierogi"

"ready to pierogi" makes no sense though! ;)

But I see your point. Unfortunately most Poles in London are serving coffee, so they have no time to open a pierogi restaurant haha
