FRIED (OFF & SLIMY) CHEESE, ANYONE?

Anyone on PF ever tried Polish fried cheese? it's not bad and is enjoyed esp. by those who like herring, brined cucumbers and hunter's sausage as bite-downs (zagrycha).

But just as some Anglos are turned off by the thought of deliberately souring milk (which to them has gone off and should be dumped), so too this type of cheese is not likely to appeal to them. White curd cheese (pot cheese, farmer cheese, pressed cottage cheese) that has started to turn yellow and slimy (there's even a Polish word for this: zgliwieć!) is simply fried, heavily seasoned at eaten like a spread on bread. Some like it so much they actually set fresh cheese aside to "zgliwieć". Plenty of vodka is recommended to wash it down. SMACZNEGO!

If it's Polish, and cheese, ill stay away. I have a deep hatred of Poles destroying the noble art of cheese making. No matter what name they give it, it's always gouda plastic :(

You may or may not fancy this fried cheese, but it is a far cry from gouda plastic!

Mmmmmm.....I LOVE this! Had it for the first time when I visited Poland and couldn't get enough of it! Where ever we stopped, we'd buy a "barrel" and munch on it until the next stop!

Finally found a place in Chicago that sells it. So when either my friend or I go there, I always pick some up.

Which is the only cheese that should ever be fried! Halloumi is also nice grilled, drissled with a good olive oil and eaten with some nice sliced tomato and fresh onion...God Am Starvin Marvin!

Con

You can find it at Richard's Market. It's located directly across the street from the Old Warsaw restaurant (4750 N. Harlem Ave. Harwood Hieghts, Illinois). You should also be able to find it at Wally's International Market at 3256 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago Illinois. I believe they also have other locations throughout the state.
